Archaeological finds and activity of L. K. Moser in Osp, Predloka and Črni Kal in Istrian Slovenia
The article assesses the archaeological activity undertaken by the Trieste biologist Dr. L. K. Moser at the end of the 19th century in the vicinity of the villages of Osp, Črni Kal and Predloka located in Istrian Slovenia. The assessment is based on printed sources, L. K. Moser\u27s manuscripts kept by the Austrian State Archives in Vienna and written and pictorial sources kept by the Civic Museum of History and Art and by the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste. On the basis of notes and fallow names carefully written down by Moser, the author of the article locates the sites from Moser\u27s notes in the vicinity of Črni Kal using the relevant land register and cadastral plans. The drawings of inscribed Roman tombstones include an unidentified monument. The article also mentions Moser\u27s co-operation with the village head Jožef Andrejašič who was undoubtedly the author of an unsigned archaeological notice published in 1899 in the Trieste newspaper Edinos
Dzikość natury i totalitaryzm, czyli wybrzeże Bałtyku w odbiorze Karla Schmidta-Rottluffa (z hermeneutyczno-topograficznym przewodnikiem Elżbiety Kal)
The book Hermeneutyka pejzażu. O topografii artystycznej Karla Schmidta-Rottluffa (Hermeneutics of Landscape: On the Artistic Topography of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, 2024) by Elżbieta Kal is the first Polish monograph devoted to the work of one of the most important German Expressionists. Focusing on painted and graphic landscapes from the Pomeranian region (now within the borders of Poland), the author offers an ambitious and holistic reading based primarily on Max Imdahl’s theory of the Iconic and Gottfried Boehm’s hermeneutics of the image. These interpretative frameworks are juxtaposed with traditional approaches rooted in the analysis of basic compositional forms and iconography – an admittedly less effective combination in this case, as it results in the inclusion of numerous rudimentary descriptions of individual works. The researcher guides the reader through Pomerania as seen through the eyes of Schmidt-Rottluff, firmly anchoring this perspective in the context of historical events – one of the book’s notable strengths. In the Expressionist’s landscapes, she identifies archetypal forms, interpreted through the symbolic tropes of Mircea Eliade, the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, and visual inspirations such as the art of Caspar David Friedrich and Vincent van Gogh. The topographical key that Kal uses to unlock the hidden meanings of Schmidt-Rottluff’s landscapes consists of the successive places he visited – each of which serves as the title of a chapter in the book

Rethinking mythology in Greek museums through contemporary culture
This thesis investigates the character with which Greek mythology, one of the most durable manifestations of ancient Greek heritage, survives in the perception of contemporary Greeks, and the role that Greek museums do and could play in this. The starting point for this investigation is the appraisal of Greek mythology as an ideological creation of ancient Greece that bears pan-human and diachronie intellectual and cultural potency and, as such, constitutes a significant interpretative tool for the contemporary Greek individual. More specifically, this thesis reconsiders the relationships between Greek mythology, Greek museums and Greek people, using as a bridge contemporary Greek art. It does so in three main chapters, which investigate and analyze different parameters of this nexus of relationships. Greek mythology’s adaptations by contemporary Greek society are also explored in an attempt to establish the dominant contemporary meanings of Greek mythology. Then, the relation of a specific cultural manifestation of contemporary Greek society, that of contemporary art, to Greek mythology is extensively analyzed through a series of interviews that were conducted exclusively for this thesis. In these interviews, contemporary Greek musicians, authors and visual artists speak of the position that Greek mythology possess (or does not possess) in their artistic expression, and discuss the intellectual and cultural significance that Greek myths retain for contemporary society and people. From these investigations, two antithetic poles emerge. On the one hand, there is the trivializing way in which Greek society deals with its myths through their exploitation, for example, for commercial or nationalist purposes. On the other hand, there is the sensitivity with which my interviewees pored over Greek myths, enabling them to emerge full of dynamism, and illuminating them as ever-active negotiators of life and human nature. Thus, contemporary art is identified as a powerful conveyor of mythology’s potency for the contemporary individual. Next, the position of Greek archaeological museums, as major official institutions that do, or could, represent and safeguard Greek mythology is explored and critically assessed. It emerges that Greek museums are rather unconcerned with Greek mythology’s representation and communication and thus, confirm that Greek mythology is a dead and irrelevant representative of a glorious, yet remote and strange, ancient civilization
Characterising anticipatory postural adjustments in turning a comparison between older adults and people with Parkinson’s disease
Data availability:
The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.Anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) are crucial for maintaining postural stability during voluntary movements such as gait initiation. While APAs have been extensively studied in forward stepping, little is known about their characteristics during turning initiation. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of (i) APAs and subsequent first steps during turning in older adults (OA) and (ii) compare them to people with Parkinson’s disease (pwP). Twenty-two pwP (tested on medication) and 17 OA performed self-paced 360˚ turns which were embedded in a complex walking task. APAs and first step characteristics were recorded using motion capture and force plate data. For pwP, APAs in turning (unloading phase) were found to be primarily mediolateral, and of significantly reduced amplitude (median = 2.5, 95% CI[0.0053; 0.0089]) in comparison to OA (median = 5.0, 95% CI[0.0073; 0.0181]). Unlike OA there was no significant association between APAs and step characteristics. These findings suggest that APAs during turning are significantly impaired in pwP, even when tested ON medication, and that this impairment may contribute to the turning difficulties often experienced by this population. Overall, these results have potential implications for clinical assessments and rehabilitation interventions, emphasising the need to tailor strategies to address turning challenges pwP face in their daily life. This work was funded by Parkinson’s UK (G-2007) and was supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research Exeter Biomedical Research Centre. Key Learning Statements for persistent pain education: an iterative analysis of consumer, clinician and researcher perspectives and development of public messaging
Data source: Supplementary data, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpain.2022.07.008Over the last decade, the content, delivery and media of pain education have been adjusted in line with scientific discovery in pain and educational sciences, and in line with consumer perspectives. This paper describes a decade-long process of exploring consumer perspectives on pain science education concepts to inform clinician-derived educational updates (undertaken by the authors). Data were collected as part of a quality audit via a series of online surveys in which consent (non-specific) was obtained from consumers for their data to be used in published research. Consumers who presented for care for a persistent pain condition and were treated with a pain science education informed approach were invited to provide anonymous feedback about their current health status and pain journey experience 6, 12 or 18 months after initial assessment. Two-hundred eighteen consumers reported improvement in health status at follow-up. Results of the surveys from three cohorts of consumers that reported improvement were used to generate iterative versions of 'Key Learning Statements'. Early iteration of these Key Learning Statements was used to inform the development of Target Concepts and associated community-targeted pain education resources for use in public health and health professional workforce capacity building initiatives. Perspective This paper reflects an explicit interest in the insights of people who have been challenged by persistent pain and then recovered, to improve pain care. Identifying pain science concepts that consumers valued learning provided valuable information to inform resources for clinical interactions and community-targeted pain education campaigns.Hayley B.
