    The dimensions of music improvisation

    The paper reports research employing a quantitative approach to investigating the specific cognitive processes adopted and musical abilities required during musical improvisation. Two questionnaires were used: the Improvisation Processes Questionnaire and the Improvisation Abilities Questionnaire. Participants were 76 adult musicians, each of them with at least two-year’s improvisation experience. Factor analysis extracted five dimensions for the Improvisation Processes Questionnaire (anticipation, emotive communication, flow, feedback and use of repertoire) and two dimensions for the Improvisation Abilities Questionnaire (musical practice and basic skills). Data were subjected to ANOVA for each of the 5+2 factors, considering the influence of three concurrent variables (instrument played, being or not being skilled at several instruments and kind of preferred music for performances). Results revealed a significant interaction between instrument played and the dimension basic skills, and between being or not being skilled at several instruments and the dimension flow. Significant Pearson correlations were found between flow and anticipation, between flow and musical practice, between anticipation and basic skills, between repertoire and emotive communication, between repertoire and feedback, between musical practice and basic skills. The interactions between the factors and the importance of the dimensions are discussed considering also how an improviser can improve performance levels

    Distributed hybrid sensors architectures for launch vehicle avionics and future space transportation systems

    Distributed architectures of hybrid sensors could greatly support the future launch vehicles navigation systems and avionics in the perspective of a significant increase of the space launches in the future years and decades. While the current architectures rely on high-TRL, costly, centralized sensors, similar performances could be reached by distributed networks of lower TRL, lower cost sensors. This paper introduces a concept for a hybrid network of sensors and will describe the prototypes and tests for several categories of implemented sensors

    New insight into the Pleistocene deposits of Monte delle Piche, Rome, and remarks on the biochronology of Hippopotamus (Mammalia, Hippopotamidae) and Stephanorhinus etruscus (Mammalia, Rhinocerotidae) in Italy

    Several large mammal assemblages have been collected in the Roman basin since the XIX century, but they usually lack any stratigraphic datum or details about the fossiliferous localities. In this work, the stratigraphic provenance of large mammal remains discovered at Monte delle Piche (Rome) is investigated. The systematic revision of these specimens allows the recording of the presence of Hippopotamus sp., Stephanorhinus sp. and Stephanorhinus etruscus. On the basis of micropalaeontological analysis performed on sediment sampled from the studied specimens and considering the stratigraphy of the area, two fossiliferous levels are recognised at Monte delle Piche. The remain of the hippopotamus was collected in fluvial gravels and sand deposits, in which the presence of Cyprideis is also recorded. This deposit is chronologically related to the latest Early-early Middle Pleistocene. Hippopotamus was present in Italy and Western Europe from the latest Villafranchian to MIS 4/3. The mandible of S. etruscus was collected in marine deposits along with abundant foraminifera and ostracods, which correlate with the late Early Pleistocene. Stephanorhinus etruscus occurred in Western Europe at the beginning of the Villafranchian, and it was documented until the end of the Villafranchian in Italy and until the Early-Middle Pleistocene transition in the Iberian Peninsula
