Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry

    No full text
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country

What Do Unions Do?: The 2004 M-Brane Stringtwister Edition

The Journal of Labor Research 20th anniversary symposium review of What Do Unions Do? offers a unique opportunity to examine how the claims made in the book have fared in ensuing research and to ponder what parts of the book I would change if I could. This paper responds to the 18 critical essays in the journal. It recognizes three major errors of omission: failure to take account of unionism outside the US; failure to analyze public sector unionism; and failure to analyze the effects of unionism on economic growth; and the problem of determining the "optimal level of unionism" on the basis of estimates of what unions do. Ensuing research has found that What Do Unions Do? correctly identified union effects on turnover, fringe benefits, earnings inequality, political action, profits, managerial flexibility and human resource management, and that wage effects vary widely. Estimates of the union effect on productivity tend to be positive but modest, ruling out negative effects on average, but not conclusively establishing positive effects. Critical comments from some of the symposium panelists notwithstanding, I believe that the bulk of the evidence supports the What Do Unions Do? claim that management opposition has been a major factor in the decline in union density in the US.

Author's reply: Comments on delay-dependent robust H-infinity control for uncertain systems with a state-delay

In the above-mentioned comment, the authors point out a technical problem with the paper [Lee, Y. S., Moon, Y. S., Kwon, W. H., & Park, P. G. (2004). Delay-dependent robust H-infinity control for uncertain systems with a state-delay. Automatica, 40(1), 65-72]. We show this technical problem can be solved by changing the proof of Theorem 3.1. An Econometric model for the evolution of the Romanian Interbank Bid Rate (ROBID) in the context of the international financial crisis

    No full text
The paper presents the econometric modeling of overnight inter-banking interest rates (ROBID) in our country, the analyzed period is between 1999-2010. The international financial crises had a great impact on the level of inter-banking interest rates after 2007 and it reflects the new level of risk for the Romanian system banking. The econometric model used in modeling the interest rates is an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model, the ARMA model is typically applied to time series data; the paper propose several ARMA models, applies econometric tests and based on them the analyzed series (the inter-banking interest rates) forecast will be made.ROBID, ARIMA model, financial crisis, forecast.

A study of cashew nut shell liquid purification and the synthesis of nonionic surfactants from the component phenols

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The major phenolic lipids from natural and technical Cashew Nut-Shell Liquids were isolated by various techniques including precipitation, chemical purification, distillation, phase separation and chromatography. Cardanol, 3-pentadecyl phenol and cardol were polyethoxylated under base catalysed conditions and the products were characterised by both nmr and HPLC. Their surfactant properties were then analysed by surface tension measurements and their rates and extent of biodegradation were evaluated by means of a modified OECD screening test. The synthesis of the biosyntetic intermediate 2,4-dihydroxy-6-pentadecyl benzoic acid, by means of a Horner-Emmons modification to the Wittig reaction, is also reported. Some studies with cavitands are also reported, including the synthesis of some novel macrocycles and some sugar transport studies

Effects of sodium hyaluronate and methylprednisolone acetate on proteoglycan synthesis in equine articular cartilage explants

Objective—To determine effects of sodium hyaluronate (HA) on corticosteroid-induced cartilage matrix catabolism in equine articular cartilage explants. Sample Population—30 articular cartilage explants from fetlock joints of 5 adult horses without joint disease. Procedure—Articular cartilage explants were treated with control medium or medium containing methylprednisolone acetate (MPA; 0.05, 0.5, or 5.0 mg/mL), HA (0.1, 1.0, or 1.5 mg/mL), or both. Proteoglycan (PG) synthesis was measured by incorporation of sulfur 35-labeled sodium sulphate into PGs, and PG degradation was measured by release of radiolabeled PGs into the medium. Total glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in media and explants and total explant DNA were determined. Results—Methylprednisolone acetate caused a decrease in PG synthesis, whereas HA had no effect. Only the combination of MPA at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL and HA at a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL increased PG synthesis, compared with control explants. Methylprednisolone acetate increased degradation of newly synthesized PGs into the medium, compared with control explants, and HA alone had no effect. Hyaluronate had no effect on MPAinduced PG degradation and release into media. Neither MPA alone nor HA alone had an effect on total cartilage GAG content. Methylprednisolone acetate caused an increase in release of GAG into the medium at 48 and 72 hours after treatment. In combination, HA had no protective effect on MPA-induced GAG release into the medium. Total cartilage DNA content was not affected by treatments. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Our results indicate that HA addition has little effect on corticosteroid- induced cartilage matrix PG catabolism in articular cartilage explants.
