Parma Co-Lab: organizational challenge for research and learning
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the initial phases of the formation of the Co-Lab as a community at the University of Parma, which aims to foster informal ways of collaboration among students, professors, researchers, with a view to increasing results in learning and knowledge sharing.
Design/methodology/approach – An ethnographical approach is applied; a constant observation inside the context through contact with participants in their environment allows the documentation of different approaches in the activity field. The context involves the DILL international Master's in Digital Library Learning. The Co-Lab agenda relies on constant problem solving and considering technology as the servant of needs for continuous learning.
Findings – Collaboration is only possible by sharing a common domain and language, enthusiasm and commitment. This is one of the benefits of an informal community of practice; nevertheless Co-Lab needs to be recognized as an informal, albeit valuable, community and supported by the institution.
Research limitations/implications – The author combines a technical background with a social observation inside a context with which she interacts constantly.
Practical implications – The Co-Lab approach to practices might be the response to the needs of academic education and research in the current technological environment. It may require the acceptance by the institutional organization of the informal paradox and non-hierarchical approach to achieve practical advantages.
Originality/value – Research carried out by an observer with technological background inside the context where students and professors interact can foster an increased awareness of diverse problems
The letter by Lorenzo Zane to Giorgio Bevilacqua from Lasize is a short scholarly treatise concerning the doctrine, where every argument is functional to the consecration of Lorenzo Valla as the greatest cultural auctoritas of his times. Its analysis shows that this letter has to be surely contextualised within the frame of the campaign of consensus promoted just by Zane and intended to assign to Valla the prestigious role of official historian of Venice. Thus, it is an extremely interesting text both because it throws light on the barely known chapter of the biography of Valla pertaining his nomination for the role of official historian of the Republic of Venice and because it also adds an important detail to the more general but not less debated matter of the origin of the Venetian humanistic historiography
Vallaajakirjanduse võimalused Nissi Valla Teataja näitel
Local newspaper’s possibilities in the example of Nissi Valla Teataja.
The motivation to research this subject was to compare a small Estonian community’s experiences covering the local life to the concepts that have managed to succeed in theory and in practise all over the world. The problematic questions starting this researchs were: can a small local newspaper even function similarly to a high quality medium? Or can the Nissi Valla Teataja, the newspaper of Nissi parish, provide it’s readers the content they are expecting?
The research questions were formulated in a way that it was possible to analyze the content of Nissi Valla Teataja throughout it’s publishing history as well as the results from the experiment, including the problems that seem inevitable to a small editorial group.
In the first part of this research there is a variety of local journalism concepts offered which are all framed with the functionalism media theory summarized by McQuail (2000).
In the following chapters the research questions and methodology (the basis of this research) were explained. In the empirical research there was found that there is enough shortages in Nissi Valla Teataja’s content to be worried about stagnation. Additionaly it was found that the newspaper does not have an active, content providing editorial group who could connect the community.
These results were also confirmed by the experimential part of the research, where the editors of the newspaper combining as a focus group admitted their lack of connection with the community and not having any editorial meetings whatsoever.
In the conclusion, the author came to a finding that despite the current situation with the low quality of editing and the surprising lack of hope towards the future, there is still a good chance to make it with the theoretical concepts in these small Estionian local newspapers. This valuation can be supported with the successful results of our experiment, where the readers were pleased as well as the editors and governmental institutions.
This research was little more emotional due to the fact that the author is currently living in Nissi parish and while studying journalism he has always been troubled by the low quality of Nissi Valla Teataja. Hopefully, this research can help to make progress raising the newspaper to a higher level.
The author would like to address his sincere gratitude to his mentor, Halliki Harro-Loit, whose incredible knowledge and willingless to help made this research possible. Thank you!http://tartu.ester.ee/record=b2612244~S1*es
Lorenzo Valla's De professione religiosorum presents a disputatio between a friar and the author regarding the prerogatives of individuals who have taken vows in a religious order. The core of the argumentation revolves around discussing whether it is right to assert that those who belong to an order, being subjected to greater punishments for violating their vows and choosing a life of obedience, poverty, and chastity, thereby have greater advantages to be deemed worthy of salvation. Lorenzo Valla argues favorably for a secular, active, and free life, employing a series of philological and rhetorical arguments to support his perspective. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategies through which Valla constructs the dialogical structure of De professione religiosorum to demonstrate the superiority of his skeptical reasoning, considering the general framework of the dialogical genre in the Quattrocento and Valla's dialogues De voluptate (or De vero bono) and De libero arbitrio.
Giorgio Valla as a Translator of Aristotle. Philological Remarks on his Latin Translations of Poetics, Magna Moralia, and De Caelo
In 1498, Giorgio Valla published a collection of translations from Greek into Latin. The selection of texts included in this edition is unprecedented, and it reflects Valla’s interests in ancient medicine, science, and philosophy. These new translations were not successful and were almost completely set aside as soon as other translations became available. In this paper, I will offer a first assessment of the three Aristotelian translations published by Valla and included in the 1498 incunable. Out of the three texts translated by Valla, only the Magna Moralia were not already available in a renaissance translation. This explains why only this translation enjoyed a rather wide success, being reprinted several times in the 16th century, while the other two suffered the competition of rival renderings. Valla is the author of the first printed translation of the Poetics. This translation was initially well received and was reprinted twice; it was later abandoned in favour of Alexander Pac..
Uno sconosciuto trattato ortografico di Giorgio Valla: il "De recto modo scribendi liber" (ante 1469)
The article presents a treatise on Latin spelling by Giorgio Valla hitherto unknown to scholars. This treatise has come down to us in two version, each one certified by just one witness : the Schlägl, ms. Cpl. 153 and the Toledo, ms. BCT 99-29. After a description of the two codexes, the content is analysed, starting from a comparison with the latter and much shorter printed work by the same author : the De ratione scribendi. The core of the work consists of an examination of the two manuscript versions, with special attention to the author’s attitude towards the subject matter, the sources used, and the different target readership. The Schlägl codex is the copy of a text prepared by Valla for his students, probably carried out by Johann von Rabenstein, while the Toledo codex is an extended and corrected revision of that text, which Valla prepared as a gift to Count Giovanni Attendolo Bolognini
The Ethics of Pleasure of Lorenzo Valla
The purpose of this dissertation is to expose and comment on the thesis of pleasure (voluptas, in Latin, edoné, in Greek) as the highest good (summum bonum), according to the Roman humanist Lorenzo Valla\' defense (1407-1457) inscribed in his dialogue De Voluptate (On Pleasure), published for the first time in 1431. In this work, which was the subject of numerous controversies between humanists and other scholastics of his time in Renaissance Europe, Valla proposes a debate between a Stoic representative and an Epicurean on the question about the ultimate end that directs our actions, also said the highest good. As a representative of the party of virtue or of the honest (honestum or honestas), that is to say, the Stoic, he chooses no one but one of the greatest representatives of the Italian republicanism of the Renaissance, the chancellor of Florence, Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444). On the opposite side, as the representative of the pleasure party (voluptas), that is, the Epicurean, he chooses no one but the author of the first volume of satirical epigrams of the Renaissance, the panormitan poet, Antonio Beccadelli (1394-1471). Through this debate, Valla seeks to counter scholastic and humanist criticisms of the \"epicurean\" model of life, pejoratively called life of \"farmers or rustics\" by his detractors, as opposed to the \"stoic\" model of public business man, committed to very high duties (officia), as they seek the protection and glory to his city
Logica laurentiana.
[a cura dell'Autore]My PhD thesis is concerned with logic developed by Lorenzo Valla in the second and third book of the Dialectica, his main philosophical work. Valla’s logic, by himself named «logica laurentiana», aim to reform aristotelian and medieval logic introducing a series of principles borrowed by rhetoric and grammar. The purpose of my thesis is to show the deep influence of this principles on the aristotelian paradigm, at least on moments that Valla is concerned with. Far from separate rhetoric from logic, or the oratorical point of view from the philosophical/logical point of view, Valla intends to give birth to a new course of logic through a refoundation of old method. In light of that, it must be reviewed another exegetical topos widespread among Dialectica’s scholars: the reduction of dialectic to rhetoric. Valla mantains the autonomy (but not the indipendence) of dialectic from rhetoric, and he grants to the first a separate space from second because the obiect of these two artes is different.
In 1444 Lorenzo Valla was charged of heresy and was brought to trial by the Inquisition. One of the main reasons was the disquisition between Valla and fra Antonio da Bitonto on the authenticity of the Apostles’ Creed: if Antonio thought that the Creed was composed by the Apostles during the day of Pentecost, Valla rejected his opinion saying that the first Creed created was the Nicene Creed. In support of fra Antonio’s thesis, the bishop of Pozzuoli showed Valla’s patron Arnaut Roger de Pallars a passage of the Decretum Gratiani in which Gratian says: Sancti Patres in concilio Niceno de omni orbe terrarum convenientes iuxta fidem evangelicam et apostolicam secundum post Apostolos symbolum condiderunt. First of all, Valla discovered that Gratian quoted this sentence from Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae; then, he said that the correct reading was secundo (Sancti Patres in concilio Niceno ... secundo post Apostolos symbolum condiderunt) and that he found this reading in an ancient manuscript of Isidore (see Antidotum in Pogium, IV, p. 359 Petrus). In this article the author demonstrates not only that this conjecture is unproven, but also that probably Valla invented the existence of this manuscript to defend himself from charges of heresy.status: Publishe
