This thesis addresses the process of developing a standalone instrument based on an analysis of tools I often utilize in my own musical practice. Based on this analysis, the thesis will outline the desired functions the instrument should possess and investigate what is required to achieve this. It will detail the theoretical foundation upon which the instrument is built, including investigations of relevant technology, and the relationship between technology and creative output. The thesis will also cover all stages of the development process, from prototyping to the construction of the final instrument. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of unique force-sensitive sensors, which serve as a critical part of the instrument's unique functionality. Finally, it will reflect on the challenges that accompanied the various solutions made during the process, and how they influenced the final result
In this bachelor's project, my goal has been to explore the use of Max MSP as a tool for generative sound design and composition. Through the project, I have investigated how this open node-based system can improve and transform the compositional process, thus contributing to the creation of unique and personal soundscapes. The process of building patches, conducting sound recordings, and integrating them into arrangements in Ableton Live has led to a new working methodology that requires the development of custom systems to achieve the desired sound design sought by a composer. This project is thus about this exploration
In this project, I have developed a musical tool, hereafter referred to as a 'system', adapted to my trumpet. I have done this by exploring how, using music technology, an acoustic instrument can transform into a fully electronic one. The goal of the assignment was to develop a system that allows real-time modification of the trumpet's sound while maintaining ergonomics. The system has been created in the form of a MIDI controller assigned to self-programmed effects. These effects can be modified in real-time through the live-performance software “MainStage”, with the input signal coming from a SILENT Brass to, among other things, minimize feedback and bleed. Through creative use, users can play and experiment with the effects, and choose between a dry signal, wet signal, or a blend of both signals. The thesis discusses various sources of inspiration, the process of programming the effects and developing the system, and the different aspects of the outcome
In this project, I have developed my own MIDI controller, adapted to my flute. I have done this to assess how, using music technology, different musical practices can be combined. For me, these practices are my background as a classical flutist, and my more recent interest in music production. The goal of the assignment was to develop a tool that helps me connect these various practices. The tool has been created in the form of a MIDI controller that can be attached to the flute, which through creative use of MIDI in a DAW can be used to play around with, and experiment with the sound of the flute while playing. All without taking my hands off the instrument. In this thesis, I go through various sources of inspiration, the process of developing the MIDI controller, and discuss various aspects of the result
Socially constructing the Richlite fretboard: Actors and artifacts in the acoustic guitar ecosystem
Shrinking global supplies of over-harvested and increasingly protected hardwoods used for acoustic guitar fretboards have led to some manufacturers exploring the use of alternative fretboard materials. In particular, Richlite—a paper composite manufactured using a thermosetting resin—has seen increased use in recent decades and has its enthusiastic adopters and vehement detractors among the guitar-playing community. In this thesis, internet forum postings concerning Richlite and made on the Acoustic Guitar Forum in the period 2011-2021 are cataloged and sorted via poster outlook and reasoning. This analysis is then interpreted using a selection of established frameworks informed by social construction of technology (SCOT) perspectives and the larger Science and Technology Studies (STS) field. Examination of the forum data via these frameworks indicates that adoption of the Richlite fretboard among users is best understood as ongoing, with closure and stabilization—as defined in SCOT methodologies—still potentially forthcoming. Conflicting pragmatic and traditionalist perspectives are driven by a host of factors that continue to support the plasticity of the artifact. Use and non-use perspectives vary, with use perspectives arising from primarily qualitative aspects of the artifact and non-use perspectives deriving from context and a narrower social and historical construction of acceptable guitar manufacturing norms

The Modern Music Creator: An exploration of the creative process, the music creator, and the history of music creation and distribution
Through my masters project, I seek to explore the creative process, look at who the music creator is today, and where they came from in a historical context. As part of this process, I am working on creating an album where the end goal is to release it on digital platforms, and to market the music to the public. I seek to approach the subjects through the lens of the home producer / bedroom artist, which I will throughout this thesis refer to as the “music creator”, as I find this definition to best represent the amalgamation of roles that make up someone who creates, records, produces and markets their own music, as well as the ones who may only operate within certain steps of the process. This is under the assumption that this person works independently of any label or other third party. What roles make up the modern music creator? Which tools are available, and how do they influence the music creators of today?
I seek to understand and explore how the music creator fits into the music industry of today, and to inform myself as to how the music industry has changed since it’s conception around the 1950s, as well as what the biggest factors for change within the industry has been since. How has new technologies or trends shaped the music industry, and what does this mean for the individuals within it?
I seek to gain a better understanding of how best to utilise your own creativity to create a musical product, but also understand the process and associated roles required for bringing a musical idea from conception to a realised product. As part of this I will look at how we can define creativity within music, looking at some of the literature on the subject. Can creativity in music be learned or improved? Is it something we are born with?
I will relate this to my own practice and background, as well as to the album project I am currently working on, explaining some of the thoughts that went into each track, and what the plan will be for me to finish said album, and some of my thoughts around releasing and marketing said album. I will look at other music creators in similar positions as myself, and try to relate some of their backgrounds and practices to my own background and works
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
