From the IBPP Research Associates. Brazil: Rafael Raffaelli. Part I
Dr. Rafaelli is affiliated with Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)--Federal University of Santa Catarina--which is located on Santa Catarina Island in Southern Brazil. His current research interests include the (1) representation of nature in the arts and (2) philosophy and implications of representation in the current social and psychological conceptions of environment leading to political action. Dr. Raffaelli also is affiliated with a doctoral program in the above areas. The author discusses the current economics crisis in Brazil
Ruolo del metabolismo dell'ossido nitrico nell'obesità: possibili meccanismi molecolari e implicazioni future
Idiomatic verb-clitic constructions: lexicalization and productivity
The paper proposes a constructionist analysis of verb-clitic combinations in Italian that are characterized by non-compositional semantics and structural fixedness (e.g. prendersela 'to become upset', smetterla 'to give it a rest'). Although most of these formations are the result of lexicalization, the paper shows that one verb-clitic combination – including typically a motion verb and the clitic cluster -sene (e.g. tornarsene a casa vs. tornare a casa 'to come back home') has developed into an independent semi-specified and semi-productive construction with emphatic meaning
Inference through innovation processes tested in the authorship attribution task
Abstract Urn models for innovation capture fundamental empirical laws shared by several real-world processes. The so-called urn model with triggering includes, as particular cases, the urn representation of the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet process and the Dirichlet process, seminal in Bayesian non-parametric inference. In this work, we leverage this connection to introduce a general approach for quantifying closeness between symbolic sequences and test it within the framework of the authorship attribution problem. The method demonstrates high accuracy when compared to other related methods in different scenarios, featuring a substantial gain in computational efficiency and theoretical transparency. Beyond the practical convenience, this work demonstrates how the recently established connection between urn models and non-parametric Bayesian inference can pave the way for designing more efficient inference methods. In particular, the hybrid approach that we propose allows us to relax the exchangeability hypothesis, which can be particularly relevant for systems exhibiting complex correlation patterns and non-stationary dynamics
EFFECTS OF FEMALE SEX HORMONES AND CONTRACEPTIVE PILL ON THE DIAGNOSTIC WORK-UP FOR PRIMARY ALDOSTERONISM
The present work highlights for the first time variations
with menstrual cycle or estroprogestin pill of newly discovered, or never related, urinary
proteins. In particular, possible protein markers could be useful for further applications in
contraceptive target research and RAAS modulation-related topics
Innovation Processes for Inference
Urn models for innovation have proven to capture fundamental empirical laws
shared by several real-world processes. The so-called urn model with triggering
includes, as particular cases, an urn representation of the two-parameter
Poisson-Dirichlet process and the Dirichlet process, seminal in Bayesian
non-parametric inference. In this work, we leverage this connection to
introduce a novel approach for quantifying closeness between symbolic sequences
and test it within the framework of the authorship attribution problem. The
method demonstrates high accuracy when compared to other state-of-the-art
methods in different scenarios, featuring a substantial gain in computational
efficiency and theoretical transparency. Beyond the practical convenience, this
work demonstrates how the recently established connection between urn models
and non-parametric Bayesian inference can pave the way for designing more
efficient inference methods. In particular, the hybrid approach that we propose
allows us to relax the exchangeability hypothesis, which can be particularly
relevant for systems exhibiting complex correlation patterns and non-stationary

Persistent and recurrent hyperparathyroidism - Attitude
Parathyroidectomy is the only curative treatment for pHPT, with a
success rate up to 98% if performed by experienced surgeons.
Whatever happened to Marshall's industrial economics?
Industry and Trade and the works on industrial economics by the Cambridge school - Chapman, Macgregor, Robertson, Lavington, A. Robinson and Florence - are usually neglected as if they were devoid of theoretical relevance. By contrast, the author argues that Marshall's evolutionary model, centred on the continuous interplay between innovation and standardization, inspired original research on localization, business size, coordination costs and industrial combinations. The paper also suggests that Marshallian ideas on the growth of firms and the structure of industrial organization are coming back in contemporary evolutionary theories of the firm. The Cambridge School, industrial organization, coordination costs, business size, innovation, standardization,
