    Emerging technologies in solid drug delivery: An interview with Nadia Passerini

    Nadia Passerini is interviewed by Hannah Makin, Commission Editor. Nadia Passerini is Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy). She obtained the degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Bologna in 1992 and the PhD in Pharmaceutical Science in 1997. Her research focuses on the study of drug delivery systems, developing new technologies and new apparatus for the production of solid dosage forms (microparticles, granules and tablets), which can optimize the bioavailability of drugs according to the specific needs of the therapy. Furthermore, she is interested in the solid-state characterization of the produced delivery systems in order to correlate their physicochemical properties to the in vitro release of the drugs. Currently, her research focuses in particular on the production and characterization of microparticles produced by the spray congealing technology. She is author of over 50 international peer-reviewed publications and over 50 contributions (poster and oral presentations) to national and international conferences

    Visible Light Promoted Site‐Specific Functionalization of α‐Acyloxy Carboxamides: Unlocking a Forbidden Chemical Space in the Passerini Reaction

    The facile generation of the alpha-acyloxy carboxamide radical is hereby reported for the first time, utilizing a photoredox catalyzed reaction of Passerini adducts synthesized using a 4-formyl-1,4-dihydropyridine as the carbonyl component. This radical effectively engages in a Giese reaction with a range of olefins, ultimately leading to the synthesis of novel Passerini-derived products not previously amenable to direct aldehyde-based transformations. Consequently, the resulting strategy, developed both in batch and in flow, offers a promising opportunity to expand the chemical space accessible through the Passerini reaction, virtually incorporating "impossible" aldehydes

    Diverse biografie dei foreign fighters, i giovani occidentali islamici partiti per combattere in Siria aderendo a gruppi estremisti, sono segnate dall’influenza della Rete. La cosiddetta “Jihadosfera” era già stata un’idea di al-Qaeda, ma Dae’sh ne ha fatto il cuore della battaglia e del reclutamento. La differenza tra l’utilizzo del Web delle due organizzazioni terroristiche può anche essere letta come la scelta di Dae’sh di puntare, conoscendo molto meglio il funzionamento del Web e sfruttando le potenzialità del Web 2.0, sui legami deboli, andando oltre la segretezza di al-Qaeda, organizzata come setta inaccessibile, grazie alle applicazioni telefoniche gratuite e ai social network. In questo caso studio sui percorsi di educazione al terrorismo jihadista, da un lato si sottolinea il ruolo di alcune caratteristiche dell’ambiente digitale, dall'altro si vede mostra come l’avventura terroristica, in modo analogo ad alcune forme d’odio online, può essere intesa come proposta pedagogica morale in risposta a una particolare spiegazione del mondo

    The article is dedicated to a certain issue crucial for understanding the shaping of collective memory in the 20th century – the mechanisms creating areas of “collective oblivion” and the actions of restoring what has been removed from memory, repressed, omitted or kept secret. The studies and papers recalled in the erudite sketch go far beyond the borders of European memories, giving the readers an insight into the phenomena of memory and silence in their global dimension. By doing so, Luisa Passerini encourages her readers to abandon the arrogant belief in our uniqueness and cultural superiority. [Translation based on: L.     Influence of the extraction method on functional properties of commercial snail secretion filtrates

    Abstract Snail secretion is a complex mixture of several components, including proteins, glycoproteins, mucopolysaccharides and smaller molecules. Its growing use in nutraceutical, cosmetic and biomedical applications, as well as a component of edible and green packaging to replace chemical plasticizer, implies more affordable and sustainable extraction methods. We chose four extracts obtained from Cornu aspersum snails, different by origin, extraction medium (namely, citric acid, lactic acid or none) and additives and we performed a series of characterizations including the SDS-page, the measure of pH and density, the evaluation of dry matter and of protein content, supported by structural determinations by means of UV-visible and infrared spectroscopy, X-Rays diffraction and thermogravimetric measurements. Biological assays comprising evaluation of cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity were also carried out. All the tests were performed both on the as received snail filtrates and on the samples after proper dialysis to remove preservatives added by manufacturers. The obtained results put into evidence that the properties and composition of the final extract are strongly influenced by the collection method, that can be relevant for the proper use of snail filtrate in specific applications

    Developments in anaplastic large-cell lymphoma: targeting the anaplastic lymphoma kinase

    Francesca Farina, Alessandra Stasia, Carlo Gambacorti-Passerini Department of Health Sciences, University of Milano Bicocca, Monza, Italy Abstract: Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a receptor tyrosine kinase protein implicated in a variety of hematological malignancies and solid tumors. ALK contributes to the development of cancers in different cell lineages through a variety of genetic mechanisms: gene fusions, activating point mutations, and possibly gene amplification. Recent developments led to significant therapeutic advances, including efficient diagnostic tests and ALK-targeting agents. This review addresses some therapeutic considerations with regard to the use of ALK inhibitors in ALK-positive lymphomas where, in spite of the advanced stage of the disease, long-lasting responses could be obtained in a substantial portion of heavily pretreated patients.
