    No full text

Youth unemployment: reassessing the role of education and labour market institutions. A comparative analysis across countries and generations

    No full text
Youth have been increasingly at the centre of the public debate of the recent years, complicit the economic crisis that hit them disproportionally and almost six years later still exhibit its persistent effects. The roots of this phenomenon go back far beyond the crisis, being structurally embedded in the cultural, economic and institutional characteristics of the countries. Young people hard times are often compared (and sometimes opposed) to the conditions of other generations, that, though strongly affected by the economic crisis, are proving to be more resilient, given a (generally) stronger “safety net” provided by greater stability and protection. Despite the great consensus existing on the fact that larger activity and employment rates for all age groups are beneficial for the society as a whole, some recent policy proposals in Europe, alarmed by the risk of a “lost generation”, seem a revival of the old “lump sum of labour” theory predicting youth and old as substitute and competitors for a fixed amount of jobs in the labour market. In this view, the present contribution aims at reassessing the institutional determinants of youth unemployment in the industrialised countries of the OECD from 1980 to 2009, in order to shed light on the long-term institutional factors hindering (or vice versa improving) youth labour market outcomes, with a focus, besides traditional labour market institutions, on the role of school-to-work transition. Empirically, the research stresses the importance of filling the skills and productivity gap by experiencing work during studies, especially by means of training contracts. Moreover, in view of the above mentioned recent policy proposals calling for job sharing between young and elderly, this contribution aims at reassessing at the comparative level the nature of the youth/old relationship in the labour market, with the aim of testing if evidence of the “boxed economy” prediction has to be found or if such dualism is only imaginary

Fragments, spolia and remains. Emotional antiquities in Rome between the Early Modern and Renaissance era

    No full text
The chapter describes the feeling aroused by the fragment of ancient ruins in Rome, between the end of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern era. The feeling of amusement experienced when coming in contact with ancient fragments was different, and encountering ruins and fragments – or even reusing pieces of architectures, through the so-called spolia – evoked emotions, mainly but not exclusively connected to the idea of common identity and reconnection with the ancient power of the Empire. The first section of the chapter will look at how these responses were influenced by changes in time perception, which resulted in feelings of temporal distance, awe and respect towards the antiquities. However, in this process, negative feelings and disruptive building practices will also be observed to contrast the sheer appreciation of ruins and fragments expressed in literature. After displaying some examples of emotions aroused by the ancient fragments, in the last section, the example of the Septizodium and its dismembering in the sixteenth century will reveal all the complex stages of emotional approaches towards fragments between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Potenzialità della fotografia e restauro del moderno

    No full text

How to signify otherness and diasporic bodies through puppetry. Two dramaturgies by Kossi Efoui

    No full text
Author of various theater plays, French-speaking writer of Togolese origin Kossi Efoui transfers in his texts, relying on the puppet’s medium, his experience of political exile from his native country and statelessness, as well as search for an identity in his adoptive country, France. Reluctant to embrace a Western view that tends to relegate authors of African origins to an exotic aesthetic, Kossi Efoui puts a complex concept of identity at the center of his dramaturgy. This chapter is centered on two different texts by Kossi Efoui, "Io (tragédie)" (2006) and "En guise de divertissement" (2013). The latter was conceived as a stage writing together with the puppet theater company Théâtre Inutile, during a collaboration lasting twenty years. Analyzing the two texts, I aim to demonstrate how the basic themes of Efoui’s dramaturgy - the trauma of exile and the expropriation, on the one hand, and the rehabilitation of a human feeling, of one’s own history and identity, on the other - find their best concretization in the staging carried out with puppets

    No full text
