ITALY'S TOP PRODUCTS IN WORLD TRADE. THE FORTIS-CORRADINI INDEX
No full textThis book analyzes Italy’s external competitiveness in detail and introduces a new index, devised by Marco Fortis and Stefano Corradini for Fondazione Edison, that highlights the strengths of Italy’s foreign trade. Compared with the Trade Performance Index compiled and updated annually by UNCTAD/WTO’s International Trade Centre, the Fortis-Corradini Index (FCI) provides greater sectorial detail by referring to 5117 products identified according to the six-digit HS 1996 international classification available on the UN Comtrade database. The new index confirms that, contrary to widespread opinion, Italy is one of the world’s most competitive countries, with an extraordinary position of leadership in world trade. Thus, according to the FCI, for 932 products Italy was either first, second or third worldwide in terms of foreign trade surplus in 2012. Furthermore, the FCI reveals, for example, that only three countries (China, Germany and the United States) surpassed Italy in 2012 in terms of the number of first, second and third places in their trade balance worldwide. No full textOn the basis of various indexes, the author demonstrates that the Italian productive system has an outstanding position in various industrial sectors in the world economy. In particular, he identifies four sectors denominated the 4As (according to the initial letter of each Italian term: clothing - Abbigliamento-moda; home furniture - Arredo-casa; food - Alimentare-vini; automation - Automazione-meccanica-gomma-plastica). The 4As accounted for a balance of payments surplus which amounts to 100 billion euros. The author emphasises how a "declinist" interpretation is based on the declining share of total Italian exports in world export. Yet, this interpretation does not adequately take into account the strategy adopted by Italian firms that, in the last years, have changed their strategy towards higher value added production. This interpretation is confirmed by the comparison of competitiveness indexes elaborated by UNCTAD/WTO (TPI, Trade Performance Index) and by the Edison Foundation (Fortis-Corradini Index). The paper examines also the performances of italian exports during the first phase of the current global crisis. On the one hand, Italy has been affected by the crisis of global demand; on the other hand, the same diffuculties were experienced by Germany, and the Italian economy initially recovered more successfully. Finally, the paper suggests that prospects for growth of Italy in international trade, depends on greater access to BRIC markets; however, the Italian small/medium size forms find it more difficult obtain a foothold than large multinationals from the other European countries

Al contrario, il mondo più sviluppato sta uscendo dalla crisi più lentamente, con problemi irrisolti dal lato dell’indebitamento delle famiglie, delle condizioni di salute del settore immobiliare e dell’occupazione, con il rischio di una possibile ricaduta in recessione. Alla crisi delle banche e delle imprese si è aggiunta, nel 2010, la crisi dei debiti sovrani dei paesi europei, che, nell’estate 2011, si è estesa all’Italia e alla Spagna, con un forte peggioramento, al di là dell’Atlantico, anche del debito pubblico Usa. In questo scenario in rapida evoluzione, quali sono le prospettive del mondo ricco, che si è scoperto improvvisamente più povero e più vulnerabile? Questo volume, seguito ideale di «La crisi mondiale e l’Italia», pubblicato da Marco Fortis con il Mulino nel 2009, raccoglie in modo organico i principali articoli sull’argomento da lui scritti in questi due anni su «Il Messaggero», «Il Sole 24 Ore», «Economy», «Panorama» e «Il Foglio».The economic recovery, that had started weakly in the second half of 2009, went on in 2010 but concerned mainly the emerging countries. The advanced world, instead, is picking up more slowly, with unresolved problems in households debts, in the building sector and in occupation, with the risk of a new fall into recession. In 2010 the crisis of the European sovereign debts was added to the banking and business crisis, extending to Italy and Spain in the summer of 2011, at the same time as a serious worsening of the U.S. public debt. Pre-Fortis Shortening in Czech English: A Production and Reaction-Time Study
No full textThis study focuses on the production and perception of English words with a fortis vs. lenis obstruent in the syllable coda. The contrast is mostly cued by the duration of the preceding vowel, which is shorter before fortis than before lenis sounds in native speech. In the first experiment we analyzed the production of 10 Czech speakers of English and compared them to two native controls. The results showed that the Czech speakers did not sufficiently exploit duration to cue the identity of the word-final obstruent. In the second experiment we manipulated C and V durations in target words to transplant the native ratios onto the Czech-accented speech, enhancing the fortis-lenis contrast, and vice versa. 108 listeners took part in a word-monitoring task in which reaction times were measured. The hypothesized advantage to items in which the target word (with a fortis or lenis obstruent) was semantically congruent with the following context was not confirmed, and subsequent analyses showed that the words’ frequency of use and the collocations they enter into strongly affect speech processing and correlate to a large degree with the reaction times

No full textThis is the first of a two-case series (308-038-1 and 308-039-1). The cases serve to illustrate innovation within large established companies. It can be used to discuss (business model) innovation in service industries. It is best used within executive programmes in the financial services industry, or in a session on innovation or venturing, or when the topic of business model innovation has been discussed. Fortis Yacht Services is also a nice example of a Blue Ocean Strategy. The (A) case presents a proposal for a new venture within Fortis, a leading Benelux financial services provider. The setting of the case is a presentation by Pascal De Wert for the Fortis Innovation Board. Pascal De Wert is a Branch Manager for Fortis. He spends his leisure time in the yachting world and this has given him the idea for Fortis Yacht Services. Offering financing and insurance services for leisure yachts, Fortis Yachting Services would be the hub for customers considering the option of purchasing a yacht. The Fortis Innovation Board needs to decide whether the approval will be given to go ahead with Fortis Yacht Services. The (B) case ends with how to develop Fortis Yacht Services further. Should it be kept separate and grow further as part of Fortis Venturing? Or should it be brought back to the traditional business lines, and hence fly away from under mother's wings
