A minimal stabilisation procedure for mixed finite element methods.
No full textStabilisation methods are often used to circumvent the difficulties
associated with the stability of mixed finite element methods. Stabilisation
however also means an excessive amount of dissipation or the loss of nice
conservation properties. It would thus be desirable to reduce these
disadvantages to a minimum. We present a general framework, not restricted to
mixed methods, that permits to introduce a minimal stabilising term and hence a
minimal perturbation with respect to the original problem. To do so, we rely
on the fact that some part of the problem is stable and should not be modified.
Sections 2 and 3 present the method in an abstract framework. Section 4 and 5
present two classes of stabilisations for the inf-sup condition in mixed
problems. We present many examples, most arising from the discretisation of
flow problems. Section 6 presents examples in which the stabilising terms is
introduced to cure coercivity problems
Error analysis of piecewise constant approximations of Darcy's law
No full textIn this paper we present a short discussion on some finite element formulations for linear elliptic problems. For the sake of simplicity we consider the Poisson equation , taking the notation from Darcy’s law. Among the zillions of such methods, we shall concentrate our attention on FEM leading to a final system of linear algebraic equations M P = F where each unknown represents the constant value of the approximated pressure in a single element. It is indeed well known that for some applications there is a certain demand for these types of schemes

No full textCet article de Gérald Fortin et Émile Gosselin et celui de M.-Adélard Tremblay qui le suit rendent compte de recherches poursuivies par un groupe de professeurs de la Faculté des Sciences sociales de Laval, La "Québec Forest Industries Association Limited" en a assumé les frais en collaboration avec le Centre de recherches de la Faculté des Sciences sociales, grâce à une subvention de la Fondation Carnegie, de New York. L'équipe des chercheurs comprenait : Émile Gosselin, directeur, Gérald Fortin, M.-Adélard Tremblay et Charles Lemelin. Cette étude a déjà donné lieu à un rapport confidentiel (Factors affecting the stability of the forest labour force) dont s'inspirent partiellement les deux articles qui suivent. Analysant les transformations du travail en forêt, Gérald Fortin et Émile Gosselin éclairent, ici, une dimension fondamentale des changements structurels que subissent actuellement nos localités rurales
