RoMEO Studies 6: Rights metadata for open-archiving

    Get PDF
This is the final study in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (Rights Metadata for Open-archiving) which investigated the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) issues relating to academic author self-archiving of research papers. It reports the results of a survey of 542 academic authors showing the level of protection required for their open-access research papers. It then describes the selection of an appropriate means of expressing those rights through metadata and the resulting choice of Creative Commons licences. Finally it outlines proposals for communicating rights metadata via the Open Archives Initiative’s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)

Understanding young people and politics in a digital context

Review Details Date: 16 August 2013 Author: Ariadne Vromen Publisher: Australian Review of Public Affairs (ARPA) Owning Institution(s): University of Sydney Book Details Title: Young People and Politics: Political Engagement in the Anglo-American Democracies Publisher: Routledge Date Published: 2013 Author/s: Aaron Martin What counts as political engagement? Some hold voting to be the gold standard and see online interaction as low cost, low impact, and of low value. Others are interested in new ways of being political and the emergence of new forms of political action. Young people are at the centre of these debates: what are they up to—if anything—in political life, and is what they’re thinking and doing enough to support democracy into the future? Aaron Martin entitled Young People and Politics: Political Engagement in the Anglo-American Democracies has some answers, but also raises some some questions. Synthemis ariadne * Yiambe Lieftinck 1975

    No full text
Synthemis ariadne Lieftinck, 1975 (Fig. 60) Synthemis ariadne Lieftinck, 1975: 160. Distribution (Fig. 61). Endemic to Grande Terre. This species is known from six localities spread along the central range. Winstanley (1984c) collected the first female in November–December 1981. Its apparent rarity is probably due to its early flight period, from mid-October to late December, a time of the year collectors seldom search for Odonata. Habitat. Synthemis ariadne frequents mountain creeks and streams, covered by forests, on non-ultramafic soil. FIGURE 62. Synthemis campioni: a) male, b) female. Biology and behaviour. The biology of this species is little known. Its final stadium larvae, described by supposition (Winstanley 1984b; Fleck 2005), lives in small creeks and their tributaries. Hiding among rocks, it may occasionally be found with S. fenella Campion, 1921. Emergence occurs not far above water surface (Winstanley 1984b). Fleck (2005) reared several larval stages in laboratory conditions without obtaining any adults because its development was so slow. This author concluded that the larval development takes at least four years. Status. Synthemis ariadne is known from a very few localities scattered over the main island. Although its habitat is not immediately threatened, we rank it EN, because of its rarity.Published as part of Grand, Daniel, Marinov, Milen, Jourdan, Herve, Cook, Carl, Rouys, Sophie, Mille, Christian & Theuerkauf, Jörn, 2019, Distribution, habitats, phenology and conservation of New Caledonian Odonata, pp. 1-112 in Zootaxa 4640 (1) on pages 60-63, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4640.1, http://zenodo.org/record/334224

FROM THE HISTORY OF PERFORMING THE OPERA ARIADNE AUF NAXOS BY R. STRAUSS

    No full text
The following article contains brief information about the opera Ariadne auf Naxos by R. Strauss, marking 100 years in 2016 since the opera was fi nished in 1916. It lists the most successful productions and their top performers. Th e article includes information, found by the author, about the performance of Ariadne`s part by M. Cebotari. Th ese were performances of the Vienna Opera in 1947, and the London festival of Richard Strauss`s music. Th e author also analyses M. Cebotari`s recording of the aria of Ariadne Es gibt ein Reich… with the orchestra of the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by H. von Karajan, made some month before her death and which has become a standard of performing skills. Mention is made of the performance of arias from R. Strauss`s opera «Ariadne auf Naxos» at the National Philharmonic of Chisinau in the vocal-symphonic concerts, dedicated to the anniversaries of R. Strauss and M. Cebotari

    21st-century scholarship and Wikipedia

Wikipedia, the world’s fifth most-used Web site, is a good illustration of the growing credibility of online resources. In his article in Ariadne earlier this year, “Wikipedia: Reflections on Use and Academic Acceptance”, Brian Whalley described the debates around accuracy and review, in the context of geology. He concluded that ‘If Wikipedia is the first port of call, as it already seems to be, for information requirement traffic, then there is a commitment to build on Open Educational Resources (OERs) of various kinds and improve their quality.’ In a similar approach to the Geological Society event that Whalley describes, Sarah Fahmy of JISC worked with Wikimedia and the British Library on a World War One (WWI) Editathon. There is a rich discourse about the way that academics relate to Wikipedia

Open Access institutional archives: a quantitative study (2006-2010)

    Get PDF
Open access publishing is growing in importance, and, in parallel, the role of institutional archives has come to the forefront of discussion within the library community. The present study is an attempt to analyse the present trend of institutional archives worldwide. The factual data of each individual repository was collected from various Directories of Institutional Repositories by using survey method. Data was analysed in terms of quantity of institutional archives increased during last six years, countrywise contents of institutional archives, types of materials archived, subject coverage, software used, language of interface of institutional archives, host domains, and policy of institutional archives. The results of the study suggest healthy growth in terms of quantity of institutional archives' increase worldwide, however, the development is more prevalent in developed countries than developing countries. The subject analysis of the institutional archives indicates that the contributors in the field of health and medicine are more interested to submit their materials in repositories. Currently the institutional archives mostly house traditional (print-oriented) scholarly publications and grey literature, using DSpace software and most of these materials were of English language. However, the policy of content inclusion, submission and preservation is yet to be well defined in institutional archives

Characterisation of lipase genes in Helicoverpa armigera

Deposited with permission of the author. © 2006 Ariadne Tan-Kristanto.Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm) is a major agricultural pest in Australia, Asia and Africa. Analysis of a midgut cDNA library revealed a surprising diversity of genes encoding lipases, enzymes that metabolise lipids. Prior to and during this project, 13 neural lipases and three acidic ones were discovered. These were classified and compared to other insect lipases using sequence alignments and phylogenetic analysis. Novel non-catalytic subfamilies were discovered, including one containing an H. armigera lipase. At least three other subfamilies were found to contain H. armigera lipases. Lipidopteran lipases were found to be almost entirely distinct from Dipteran ones
