The author has accredited two ways of manifesting modernity in poetry: notation poetry and fragmentaristic poetry, in the Romanian lyrics in Bessarabia of the 1980 s

GRIGORE VIERU ŞI LUCIAN BLAGA: PO(I)ETICA DORULUI, SACRULUI, ABISALULUI

    No full text
GRIGORE VIERU AND LUCIAN BLAGA: THE POETIC OF LONGING, SACRED, ABYSSALThe author achieves a comparison between the poetry and poetic art of Lucian Blaga, as well as in the case of Grigore Vieru. It is pointed out some similarities regarding the theme and motive, like destiny, „perpetuity that was born in the village”, love as complex state (longing), dialogue with God, the spring and the dwell, the dream and the sleep, the light and the dark. The influence of Blaga is analyzed at stylistic as well as at the visionary levels. Grigore Vieru descends in the underground area of the human spirit, giving an expression to the abyssal, a term on which Blaga meditates in his philosophical masterpiece (especially in The Trilogy of culture). The author sees a deep impression of the Blaga model on Grigore Vieru’s aphorisms, gathered under the title Motion in infinity. The lyrical and philosophical speech is combined in an organic way, forming the lyrosophy.</p

The aim of this paper is to present the results obtained from the scientific investigations carried out to establish the materials and methods used by the painter for the accomplishment of the religious art work, both for conservation and restoration purposes, as well as to enrich the knowledge about the work of this particular author and about the Transylvanian iconography in general. The analyses were performed by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy and destructive and nondestructive Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.</p

The Egyptian Dialect for a Democratic Form of Literature: Considerations for a Modern Language Policy

    No full text
This paper compares two different ways of approaching literature and language in Egypt. In particular, I concentrate on the use of colloquial Egyptian in literature, and more specifically in prose. I look at the ideas of Ṭaha Ḥusayn on Egyptian dialect and juxtaposes them with those of intellectuals and writers contemporary to Ḥusayn such as Salama Musa and Muṣṭafa Mušarrafatu, the first Egyptian author to write a novel entirely in patois. In a radio interview, Nagib Maḥfuẓ described dialect as a disease affecting his fellow countrymen and preventing them from attaining social as well as technical progress. In Ṭaha Ḥusayn’s opinion, dialect is unworthy of being called a language and unfit to fulfil the aims of intellectual life. On the other hand, intellectuals like Salama Musa maintain that the use of dialect, even as an official language, and a linguistic reform are the most important prerequisites for the progress of Egypt. Extremely interesting, moreover, is Musa’s idea that the use of colloquial language in literature would give birth to a literature for everybody, that is a popular or democratic literature

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2010.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 89-93).Cryo-electron microscopy is a method that produces 3D density maps of macromolecular complexes. Segmentation and registration methods are heavily used to extract structural information from such density maps. Segmentation aims to identify regions in a density map corresponding to individual molecular components, so as to allow us to understand their complex arrangements and the relation of these arrangements to the function of the complex. Currently used segmentation methods rely to a large degree upon user interaction and thus are tedious and yield subjective results. We present a multi-scale segmentation method requiring very little interaction and guidance from the user. The segmentation accuracy of this method is quantified for simulated density maps, using a shape-based metric. The method is applied to several density maps of various sizes and complexity, producing accurate results. Registration of molecular structures with density maps helps to relate the vast structural information from X-ray crystallography with the structural information contained in cryo-electron microscopy density maps. The most reliable registration methods to date depend on exhaustive search, which is time-intensive and scales poorly with map and structure size. Two methods are presented that achieve direct registration of structures with density maps, based on the alignment of the structures to segmented regions.(cont.) The registrations are refined using a gradient-based method, which locally optimizes the density cross-correlation score. A search algorithm is presented for automatically finding groups of regions that produce correct registrations. The accuracy of these registration methods is measured using simulated density maps, and then the methods are used to register structures of individual proteins and subunits with density maps obtained by cryo-electron microscopy.by Grigore D. \u3ci\u3eFrom Economic Crisis to Reform: IMF Programs in Latin America and Eastern Europe\u3c/i\u3e by Grigore Pop-Eleches (Book Review)

    No full text
Grigore Pop-Eleches’s book on the interaction of international and domestic determinants of IMF-style reforms in developing countries makes a significant contribution to international and comparative political economy literature. His effort to capture the dynamics of the contentious and complex relationship between the IMF and developing countries/emerging markets inLatin AmericaandEastern Europerepresents mid-range theorizing at its best. The author combines insights from international and comparative political economy literatures to pursue complementary questions. From the international effect perspective: what role do economic crises play in the initiation and implementation of IMF-backed economic reform? Is the IMF impartial in its policy and financial support for countries in need? In what ways do IMF lending patterns reflect the changing demands of international financial markets, as well as the shifting priorities of advanced industrialized democracies (p.2)

Grigore Niculescu-Buzești, Chargé d'Affaires of Romania in Riga During the Years Fateful for the Baltic States, 1939–1940

    No full text
In the case of the mandate that Grigore Niculescu-Buzești (1908–1949) fulfilled in the Latvian capital, attention is captivated, from the very beginning, by his numerous reports and analysis carried out by the Romanian diplomat. A careful and detailed study of the telegrams he sent to Bucharest from the Baltic capital can reveal to anyone, on the one hand, the concerns, fears, tensions and hopes of the authorities in Riga, as well as of Latvian society, in the context of the Soviet-German pact of 23 August 1939, of the outbreak of the war and the relationship with the Soviet Union, and on the other hand, – the mechanisms of Moscow’s aggression that led to the annexation of the Baltic countries in June 1940. Until the summer of 1940, the Romanian diplomat sent numerous telegrams to Bucharest, in which the stages of the annexation can be captured clearly and precisely. The number of documents and the amount of information reveal Bucharest’s high interest regarding the events in the Baltic states at that time. Thus, the author can trace the impact and relevance of his information and analysis in a tragic context, marked by tensions and convulsions throughout Europe. Moreover, Niculescu-Buzeștis experience as Romani’s chargé daffaires in Riga deeply marked the future Romanian minister of foreign affairs
