Extraction and characterization of a natural rubber from Euphorbia characias latex
A natural rubber was identified and characterized for the first time in the latex of the perennial Mediterranean shrub Euphorbia characias. Four different methods, i.e., acetone, acetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and Triton (R) X-100, followed by successive treatments with cyclohexane/ethanol, were employed to extract the natural rubber. The rubber content was shown to be 14% (w/v) of the E. characias latex, a low content compared with that of Hevea brasiliensis (30-35%) but a similar content to other rubber producing plants. E. characias rubber showed a molecular weight of 93,000 with a Mw/Mn of 2.9. 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FTIR analysis revealed the characteristic of the cis-1,4-polyisoprene typical of natural rubber. These results provided novel insight into latex components and will ultimately benefit the broader understanding of E. characias latex composition
Faculty Perception of Bullying in Schools of Nursing
Aims: This paper is a report of a study of conducted to determine the prevalence of bullying among faculty members in Schools or Colleges of Nursing.
Background: The issue of bullying of nursing faculty in the academic setting is of interest in terms of recruitment, retention, job satisfaction, and the overall quality of the work environment.
Method: This cross-sectional, descriptive study of faculty in three northeastern states of the U.S. was carried out in 2010. The Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised was used to survey faculty members in Schools of Nursing who award a baccalaureate degree (or higher) in nursing.
Results: 473 faculty members met the inclusion criteria and responded to the NAQ-R. An iterative exploratory principal components analysis with orthogonal rotation was performed. Thirteen of the original 22 items were retained to measure the experiences of negative acts in the nursing faculty workplaces. The mean total score for the 13 item instrument was 17.90 (SD 6.07) and ranged from 13 to 56. The resulting components structure produced three clear subscales identifying the experiences of: Verbal abuse, Physical abuse, and Devaluing. The revised 13 item instrument had a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.88. Experiences of bullying were reported in 169 of the 473 (36%) respondents. A significant correlation was found between meeting frequency and the report of bullying (r = 0.18, p ≤ 0.001). Administrators and senior faculty were more likely than expected to be the perpetrators of bullying.
Discussion: If the leaders are identified as bullies, the environment cannot be perceived as supportive and healthy. These unhealthy environments may have serious consequences related to retaining nursing faculty.Peer reviewe

Principali avversità biotiche dell'eucalipto in Sardegna
Labor Markets in the Twentieth Century
The study of the labor market across the past hundred years reveals enormous progress and also that history repeats itself and has come full circle in some ways. Progress has been made in the rewards of labor -- wages, benefits, and increased leisure through shorter hours, vacation time, sick leave, and earlier retirement. Labor has been granted added security on the job and more safety nets when unemployed, ill, and old. Progress in the labor market has interacted with societal changes. Women's increased participation in the paid labor force is the most significant. The virtual elimination of child and full-time juvenile labor is another. Two of the most pressing economic issues of our day demonstrate that history repeats itself. Labor productivity has been lagging since the 1970s. It was equally sluggish at other junctures in American history, but the present has unique features. The current slowdown in the United States has been accompanied by a widening in the wage structure. Rising inequality is a far more serious problem because of the coincidence. The wage structure was as wide in 1940 as today but there is, to date, no hard evidence when it began its upward trend. The wage structure has, therefore, come full circle to what it was more than a half century ago. Union strength has also come full circle to that at the turn of this century.
Strongly nonlinear Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality in Orlicz spaces and Boyd indices
Given a N-function and a continuous function satisfying certain assumptions, we derive the inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \int_\r A(|f^{'}(x)|h(f(x)))dx\leq C_1\int_\r A\left(C_2 \sqrt[p]{ |{\cal M}f^{''}(x){\cal T}_{h,p}(f,x)| }\cdot h(f(x)) \right)dx, \end{eqnarray*} with constants independent of , where

Abstract: The paper analyses the poem “Os dias de então”, by Claudia Roquette-Pinto (Margem de manobra, 2005, p. 85-86) from the point of view of dramatic monologue genre, based on Jane Roche-Jaques (2020) and Shira Wolosky (2001). Voice fictionalization processes (COMBE, 2009/2010), just as lyric addressment (CULLER, 2015; SERMET, 2019) are also considered in order to understand the effects of the orchestrated voices in the poem. There is a leading voice in “Os dias de então”, identified as Zelda Fitzgerald’s by the author. Zelda’s speech was translated and adapted by Roquette-Pinto from a part of a letter to Scott Fitzgerald. The languor and tenderness of this subjective voice in prose is crossed by other voices in verse which are impersonal, anonymous and bring up violent content. The reader testifies subterranean links between the leading voice and the other utterances through brutality and impact, in the poem’s bigger arrangement. Such links and references are rarefied and unstable, which is often noted in Claudia Roquette-Pinto’s poetry. Biographic information (MILFORD, 2013; BRYER et al, 2002) and confluences between lettering and lyric genres (SILVA, 2002; ADORNO, 2003) are brought up in the article in order to understand the arrangement of utterance articulation, as well as the social construct that moved them. Keywords: dramatic monologue; lyric addressment; contemporary poetry; voice; Claudia Roquette-Pinto
Introducing QMC/MMpol: Quantum Monte Carlo in Polarizable Force Fields for Excited States
We present for the first time a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics scheme which combines quantum Monte Carlo with the reaction field of classical polarizable dipoles (QMC/MMpol). In our approach, the optimal dipoles are self-consistently generated at the variational Monte Carlo level and then used to include environmental effects in diffusion Monte Carlo. We investigate the performance of this hybrid model in describing the vertical excitation energies of prototypical small molecules solvated in water, namely, methylenecyclopropene and s-trans acrolein. Two polarization regimes are explored where either the dipoles are optimized with respect to the ground-state solute density (polGS) or different sets of dipoles are separately brought to equilibrium with the states involved in the electronic transition (polSS). By comparing with reference supermolecular calculations where both solute and solvent are treated quantum mechanically, we find that the inclusion of the response of the environment to the excitation of the solute leads to superior results than the use of a frozen environment (point charges or polGS), in particular, when the solute-solvent coupling is dominated by electrostatic effects which are well recovered in the polSS condition. QMC/MMpol represents therefore a robust scheme to treat important environmental effects beyond static point charges, combining the accuracy of QMC with the simplicity of a classical approach
Spatial Association of Food Sales in Supermarkets with the Mean BMI of Young Men: An Ecological Study
Supermarket food sales data might serve as a simple indicator of population-level dietary habits that influence the prevalence of excess weight in local environments. To test this possibility, we investigated how variation in store-level food sales composition across Switzerland is associated with the mean Body Mass Index (BMI) of young men (Swiss Army conscripts) living near the stores. We obtained data on annual food sales (2011) for 553 stores from the largest supermarket chain in Switzerland, identified foods commonly regarded as “healthy” or “unhealthy” based on nutrient content, and determined their contribution to each store’s total sales (Swiss francs). We found that the sales percentages of both “healthy” and “unhealthy” food types varied by 2- to 3-fold among stores. Their balance ranged from −15.3% to 18.0% of total sales; it was positively associated with area-based socioeconomic position (r = 0.63) and negatively associated with the mean BMI of young men in the area (r = −0.42). Thus, even though we compared supermarkets from a single chain, different shopping behaviors of customers caused stores in privileged areas to sell relatively more healthy food. Knowledge about such patterns could help in designing in-store interventions for healthier nutrition and monitoring their effects over time
