In this photograph, Italian immigrant Florindo Dipinto operates his tool-grinding cart on the sidewalk in Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1950-1960. Dipinto immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1913 at age 17. He originally settled in Chicago where he learned the tool-grinding trade from his uncle, Vincenzo Fabrizio. After one year of working with his uncle, he was able to purchase his own tool-grinding cart. Before settling in Cleveland, he worked in a coal mine in Colorado; served briefly in the United States Army during World War I; operated his grinding cart in Youngstown, Ohio, and returned to Italy where he served in the Army and met his wife Maria. Between 1927 and 1961, Dipinto operated his grinding cart in Cleveland, sharpening tools for a variety of customers. He retired in 1961 and passed away in 1981. The grinding cart is part of the Ohio Historical Society museum collections

The paper discusses the functions of the publisher and patron in the publication of printed books during the 16th Century. With this purpose, the activity of Fernando Basurto, author, and Juan Fernandez de Heredia, patron-editor, about the fi rst edition of Florindo published in Zaragoza by Pedro Hardouin in 1530 is studied

Introduction to Cenozoic Antarctic glacial history

Fluctuations in size of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS), a feature of the southern high latitudes for at least the last 35 million years, have been one of the major driving forces of changes in global sea level and climate through the Cenozoic Era. Under the prospect of a warming climate (IPCC, 2007), it is important to assess the past and future stability of the cryosphere, particularly after ice core records identified a direct link between variations in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and palaeotemperatures. This special issue of Global and Planetary Change developed largely from contributions presented at the EGU meeting in Vienna, Austria (http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2008/; 13–18 April, 2008), and at the International Geological Congress (IGC) Conference in Oslo, Norway (www.33igc.org/; 6–14 August, 2008) where we organised sessions designed to investigate the many orders and scales of variation of Antarctic ice sheets and palaeoclimate from Antarctic and Subantarctic records, from outcrop studies, deep sea drilling, continental margin drilling and seismic investigations, permafrost and ice core drilling. This special issue of Global and Planetary Change continues a series of related special issues and a book (Florindo et al., 2003, 2005; Barrett et al., 2006; Florindo et al., 2008; Florindo and Siegert, 2009), all of which are linked to the Antarctic Climate Evolution (ACE) project. ACE is an initiative of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to investigate the climate and glacial history of Antarctica by linking climate and ice sheet modelling studies with terrestrial and marine geological and geophysical evidence of past changes (www.scar.org/researchgroups/geoscience/ace; http://www. ace.scar.org). Over the coming years, ACE will pursue a broad range of objectives to better comprehend past Antarctic changes through organisation of workshops and publication of special issues, allowing the dissemination of geological data and numerical modelling to a wide audience.Publishedv-vii1.8. This research presents the origin of the concept of "race" used within the human species, along with the natural sciences, and its creators. The work shows that such use is no longer accepted within science today, more specifically within biology, which with the advances in genetics, molecular biology and related areas, These have shown that the concept of "race" is no longer valid, showing that the concept was introduced into science on purpose to generate a way to legitimize slavery, as a way to validate the cruelties generated by the white man to the black people, as a way to maintain slavery and the slave regime. I have as the starting point of this project a first encounter with the ethno-racial theme during graduation, which generated fruits which I highlight in the text - Education and the fight against racism: Reflections of a black university teacher. This project aims to show the applicability of Law No. 10.639/2003 regarding its application in textbooks of the PNLD 2020/2023. And from this reality found, the work comes to bring an understanding of the application (or not) of th e law created for the Brazilian population to understand the reality of African culture and history which is the basis of history and culture of Brazilian society, so the research aimed to analyze four collections of science textbooks for primary schools II of PNLD 2020/2023, where we tried to find the effectiveness of the law in the contents of genetics and evolution of the human species, in order to see the concrete implementation of Law No. 10.639/2003. Bringing with this one more opportunity to spread the law so that the academic community sees the need to have an education focused on anti-racism still so present in the Paraiban society, as in the UFPB itself.
