Economic utopia of the Torah. Economic concepts of the Hebrew Bible interpreted according to the Rabbinical Literature
Hebrew Bible offers alternative Economic utopia for building Theocratic society. In this paper, various economic concepts and themes are presented, as found in the Hebrew Bible. These economic concepts include taxation, property rights, labor market, social policy, banking, years of Sabbath and Jubilee, and business cycles. Most economic issues of the Bible are found in the texts of Torah, also known as five Books of Moses. These texts are analyzed by using classical Rabbinical commentaries for better insight. Contrary to the modern Economic theory which is based on the assumptions of scarcity of resources and unlimited needs of consumers, Economics of the Torah is based on God’s resources which are enough for all true needs of His people.Hebrew Bible, History of Economics, History of Economic Thought, Ancient Israel, Judaism
The aim of this paper is to analyse King David’s character as it appears in the play Keter ba-rosh written by Yaakov Shabtai in 1968-1969. In addition to the comparison with the original biblical character, a deep survey of King David’s role in the play has been conducted in the order to explain the different possible interpretations of the work. A particular attention is devoted to the affinity between this play and the fictional work of the author
An examination of the title "Me'am Lo'ez" by Rabbi Yaakov Khuli (1689-1732)
Me'am Lo'ez, first published in Istanbul (Constantinople) in 1730, is undoubtedly the most important and successful literary work in the history of Judeo-Spanish literature. Nevertheless, this monumental masterpiece has been largely neglected, not only in Japan but also among Jewish scholars. In this article, I offer some basic facts on the work and examine the title of the book “Me'am Lo'ez," which is taken from the verse Psalms 114: 1; “When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people (Me'am) of strange language (Lo'ez)." I identify four characteristics of the work that establish its status as a classic. The first characteristic is that it was written in colloquial Judeo-Spanish (Ladino), not Hebrew, the eternal sacred language for Jews. That's why it suits for the verse “a people of strange language". The second characteristic relates to the philanthropist Yehuda (Judah) Mizrachi, who offered economic assistance for publishing the book “Me'am Lo'ez Bereshit." Since the words “Me'am Lo'ez" follow the verse psalms 114: 2; “Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion," the author quoted these two verses (Psalms 114: 1-2), turning its original meaning into the praise for Yehuda Mizrachi. The third characteristic has to do with the words “Bet Yaakov," which precede the words “Me'am Lo'ez" in the verse of the psalms 114: 1, and implies in Jewish tradition “Jewish women," consequently “illiterates of Hebrew" in this context. The fourth one is associated with the verse of psalms 114: 7; “Tremble (Huli), thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob." The first word “Tremble (Huli)" has similar sound to the author's family name Khuli. Moreover, this article points out that there is yet another distinguishing characteristic of Me'am Lo'ez, which is the work's relationship with Yaakov Khuli's maternal lineage, the family of Ibn Haviv. Yaakov Ibn Haviv who wrote famous Aggadah anthology “En Yaakov" is of that lineage.departmental bulletin pape
The quantum Fourier transform and quantum chaos
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, 2003.Includes bibliographical references (p. 127-133).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. In this thesis I study control of quantum systems while implementing complex quantum operations. Through experimental implementations of such operations, I test the accuracy of control and provide methods for identifying the type and strength of experimental errors. The centerpiece of this work is the quantum Fourier transform (QFT), an essential gate for quantum algorithms and quantum simulations. Experiments are performed on a three qubit liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor, and demonstrate salient features of the QFT in both of these venues. The first experiment exhibits the ability of the QFT to extract periodicity, a necessary process for many quantum algorithms. As an example of a quantum simulation, I implement a three qubit quantum baker's map, which is composed of QFTs, and discuss how various conjectures of quantum chaos could be experimentally realized on a quantum computer. Another example of complex quantum operations are 'pseudo-random' maps. These are operators which pass statistical tests of randomness but can be efficiently implemented on a quantum computer. I explore the importance of pseudo-random maps for the study of quantum chaos and a host of quantum information processing protocols. I also implement a set of such maps experimentally. In order to determine the type and strength of the errors effecting our implemetations, quantum process tomography is done on the QFT.(cont.) From the constructed QFT superoperator and Kraus forms I show how best to analyze the data in order to extract information about coherent, incoherent, and decoherent errors. Finally, I explore fidelity decay as a signature of quantum chaos. The simulations performed concentrate on the exact determination of fidelity decay behavior for quantum chaotic systems, and attempt to identify properties of the evolution operator that cause the observed fidelity decay behavior.by Yaakov Shmuel Weinstein.Ph.D
The Reflection of the Ethnic Ethos in the Shaping of Mizrahi Female Characters, in the Light of the Literary Criticism of Yaakov Churgin’s Books – Sipurim (1928), Alumot (1957), and Yalkut Sipurim (1981)
This article suggests taking a close look at the stories of Eretz-Israel author Yaakov Churgin (1899 – 1990) as a hybrid system of identities, that is ambivalent and unclassified, that can also fit stories about Jews of Ashkenazic origin as they were portrayed in the stories of the Jewish shtetls by authors such as Shalom Aleichem, Dvora Baron, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Shay Agnon, while identifying the similarity between secular or enlightened Orientalism’s attitude to traditional or religious society, and Ashkenazic Orientalism’s attitude to the Mizrahi Jews in Eretz-Israel. The article will also suggest a new diachronic examination of the literary criticism regarding Churgin’s writing in its ethnic context, that will review the primary criticism over the years and address the characteristics of this criticism in light of the changes over the years
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the status of the poet in the third tale (maḥberet) of Sefer ha-Meshalim, by Yaakov ben Eleazar, written in the thirteenth century. This examination focuses on the very thin line between reality and fiction, as is reflected in the tale. The tale describes a competition between Lemuel (the narrator and protagonist of the tale but also the alter‑ego of Yaakov, the “historical” author) and the poet’s rival. Their challenge is to improve a verse written by Yemima (a poetess, the protagonist of another tale) by composing a verse on the same subject with the same number of images, and then to continue the contest by increasing the number of metaphors. Through this competition, the readers are introduced to a representation of the poet, caught between the anguish of failure and his confidence in his talent, eager to be recognized by the public. The article analyses these features based upon the staging of the competition, the names given to the characters, the interpretation of selected metaphors and the technical virtuosity demonstrated at each stage, as well as the status of each of the figures, especially that of the poetess.
Perceptions of school psychologist function among newly enrolled school psychology graduate students
Scarce research exists on school psychology graduate students’ perceptions of school psychologist functions. Understanding training school psychologists’ perceptions of school psychologist functions is important because inaccurate perceptions may lead to unmet professional expectations, leaving trainees at risk for reduced job satisfaction, burnout, and other negative outcomes. This study used a survey research design to examine newly enrolled school psychology graduate students’ perceptions of how school psychologists spend their time in comparison to self-reports from school psychologists as recorded in the 2010 NASP survey of school psychologists. The study also assessed regret after participants were presented with data on the proportion of time school psychologists actually spend providing special education evaluations and direct services such as individual and group counseling. Finally, demographic variables such as professional experience in public schools prior to entering graduate school, age, gender, highest degree earned, highest degree pursued in graduate school, degrees offered by program, and program theoretical orientation were investigated for their potential relationships with time estimates and regret. Respondents included 182 newly enrolled graduate students in NASP approved and/or APA accredited school psychology specialist, Master’s and doctoral programs. Results revealed that participants underestimated the percentage of time school psychologists spend conducting special education evaluations by nearly 20 percentage points when compared to results from the 2010 NASP survey, t(399.54) = 12.2, p<.000, d=.76. Participants overestimated the time school psychologists spend providing individual counseling t(465.27)=2.94, p<.001, d=.17 and group counseling (444.74) = 5.42, p < .001, d = .409, η2 = .04, by approximately 2 percentage points, in comparison to results from the 2010 NASP survey. After presenting data about the actual time school psychologists spend engaged in special education evaluation and direct service, over 25% of participants indicated regret for pursuing training in school psychology. A positive correlation was found between prior professional experience in the public school system and time estimates for special education evaluation, r (175) = .14, p = .03. Other demographic variables did not correlate with or predict time estimates or regret. Implications for the field of school psychology may be increased effort to ensure accurate portrayals of the profession.Psy.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Yaakov Weine
