Value, money and capital. The critique of political economy and contemporary capitalism
No full textThis book aims to offer a still relatively unknown but potentially high-impact re-reading of Marx and Marxist debates. This will be achieved in the following ways. On the one hand, the book will address, in an original and innovative fashion, various classic and more recent debates in the Marxian critique of political economy, including: value-theory, the commodity-nature of money, complex or skilled labour, the determination of the value of labour-power, the nature of extraordinary surplus value, and the concrete forms of monetary circulation and the credit system. In revisiting these various controversies, the book will shed new light on what still are fundamental dimensions and processes of the capitalist economy, thus providing a fresh perspective on its contradictory foundations and developmental tendencies.On the other hand, the book will offer original insights into aspects of contemporary capitalism based upon its unique and novel take on recent debates surrounding the relevance of Marxism today. Those other intellectual controversies include: the increasingly intellectual character of commodity-producing labour, the emergence of global value chains, the relevance of ground-rent bearing commodities, and the specific, uneven developmental dynamics of ?resource-rich? countries in the global process of capital accumulation.We firmly believe that the book throws into relief the need for solid general theoretical and methodological foundations, in order to develop a critical scientific understanding of the recent transformations of the capitalist mode of production. Furthermore, it contributes to the renewed vitality of critical studies of the economic works of Karl Marx. The economic determinations of the "oil contracts" in Argentina (1958- 1963)
No full textEste artículo investiga los contratos de producción petrolera en Argentina entre 1958 y 1963. Se analizan las condiciones materiales de producción, las formas de valorización del capital y la relación del sector con el resto de la economía. Con base en fuentes estadísticas poco estudiadas se muestra, primero, que la producción bajo los contratos arrojaba ganancias extraordinarias derivadas de las condiciones naturales de los yacimientos, es decir, rentas de la tierra. Segundo, se señala que parte de esta renta fue transferida hacia el conjunto del capital industrial local mediante el abaratamiento de los combustibles.This article examines the oil production contracts in Argentina between 1958 and 1963. It investigates the material conditions of production, the forms of capital valorisation and the relationship between the oil sector and the rest of the economy. Based on some overlooked statistical sources, it shows that contractual production involved extraordinary profits steaming from the natural conditions of oil fields, i.e. ground rents. Fases del desarrollo de la industria automotriz argentina: Determinantes globales y especificidad nacional (1914-2017)
No full textEl presente capítulo estudia la evolución seguida por la industria automotriz en Argentina, a lo largo de su historia, con el objetivo de identificar sus diferentes fases de desarrollo, presentar el modo de funcionamiento de la industria en cada una de ellas y exponer los determinantes de las transiciones de cada etapa a la siguiente. Se periodiza el desarrollo de la industria automotriz argentina en tres fases. La primera de ellas, que se extiende desde 1914 hasta mediados de la década de 1950, se caracteriza por actividades simples de montaje de kits importados, complementadas por importaciones de vehículos terminados. Esta etapa local se corresponde con el predominio en el nivel mundial de la producción en serie manufacturera. La extensión y consolidación de la gran industria en el nivel global luego de la segunda guerra mundial explica en gran medida, como veremos, el pasaje a una segunda etapa en la Argentina, en la que se incorporan dentro de las 58 empresas terminales la mayoría de los procesos productivos de los países clásicos (es decir, estampado de partes metálicas, maquinado de partes y ensamblado de motores, transmisiones y otros componentes, etc.). Por último, veremos que la tercera etapa local, signada por la integración regional en el Mercado Común del Sur (MERCOSUR), responde a los cambios organizacionales derivados de la revolución microelectrónica y la robotización de los procesos productivos en el nivel mundial.Fil: Fitzsimons, Alejandro Luis. The blind spots of secularization
No full textAccording to several international surveys Spain is among the western countries with the most negative views of Jews. While quantitative data on the topic accumulates, there is a significant lack of interpretative approaches that might explain the particular Spanish case. This paper presents the background, methodology and major results of a discussion group-based study on antisemitism, which was conducted in Spain in the autumn of 2009. The study identifies and locates in different socio-economic and ideological milieus the range of stereotypical discourses on Jews, Judaism and the Arab–Israeli conflict in Spain. Analysis of the group meetings shows that, despite growing secularization in Spanish society, the central explanatory variable for persisting and resurging antisemitism in this country is still religion in a broad cultural sense.N
Global capital, uneven development and national difference: Critical reflections on the specificity of accumulation in Latin America
No full textA recent Special Issue in this journal devoted its pages to discuss the varied forms of capitalist development in different countries and regions across the globe. Specifically, the contributions offered a critical assessment of the hegemonic ‘neo-institutionalist’ approach to the study of national diversity of capitalism, with particular focus on the ‘varieties of capitalism’ approach. This article critically engages with the different alternatives to the varieties of capitalism approach that were put forward and shows that these other perspectives also fall short of providing a convincing framework to address the problematique of national or regional particularities as posed in the debate. In order to offer a more solid explanation of the phenomenon of ‘capitalist variety’, the article draws upon Marx’s fundamental insight into the determination of capital as a materialised social relation which becomes the immediate alienated subject of the organisation of the process of social life and also moves some way beyond it so as to cast fresh light on global transformation and uneven development in recent decades. More concretely, the article further submits that the specificity of the Latin American ‘variety of capitalism’ must be grounded in the constitution and dynamics of the international division of labour which results from the underlying essential unity of the production of relative surplus value on a world scale by the global total social capital. What is "commodity fetishism"? A textual analysis of the fourth section of the first chapter of marx's capital
No full textEste artículo ofrece un comentario detallado de la sección cuarta del capítulo primero de El Capital de Marx, con el propósito de determinar y explicitar qué es exactamente el llamado "fetichismo de la mercancía". Se muestra que en dicha sección Marx no se refiere principalmente ni a la comprensión errónea de la forma mercantil ni a la "cosificación" de las relaciones sociales inherente a dicha forma. En cambio, se señala que, para Marx, el fetichismo es una forma de conciencia surgida del carácter privado del trabajo que media la constitución misma de la mercancía como tal. En este sentido, se argumenta que el valor no es simplemente una forma de relación social sino, más precisamente, que es una forma exteriorizada y objetivada de conciencia a través de la cual los productores de mercancías organizan la producción social.This article offers a detailed comment on the fourth section of the first chapter of Marx's Capital, in order to determine and specify what exactly is the so-called "commodity fetishism". It is shown that in that section Marx is not dealing mainly with the misunderstanding of the commodity–form nor with the "reification" of social relations inherent of that form. Instead, the article claims that, for Marx, fetishism is a form of consciousness —arousing from the private character of labour— that mediates the very constitution of the commodity as such. In this sense, it is argued that value is not simply a form of social relation but, more precisely, an exteriorized and objectified form of consciousness through which the commodity producers organise social production.Fil: Fitzsimons, Alejandro Luis. Sus limitadas escalas de producción, la tecnología anticuada y niveles de productividad más bajos que el promedio en el mercado mundial, así como la orientación interna de la industria regional, son características compartidas por ambos procesos nacionales de acumulación de capital, los cuáles todavía se encuentran organizados en torno a la apropiación, por parte del capital industrial, de una parte de la renta sustancial disponible.The expansion of the automotive industry in Argentina and Brazil and its regional integration can be attributed to determinants that differentiate them from other contemporary regionalization processes. A commodity “like all other commodities”? Re-examining the determination of the value of labour power
No full textEste artículo aborda la cuestión del proceso de producción de la fuerza de trabajo con el objetivo de reexaminar la postura de Marx sobre la determinación del valor de esta mercancía peculiar. En pos de ello, se revisan críticamente los principales aportes que han cuestionado el análisis marxiano de dicho fenómeno, para luego ofrecer una línea argumental alternativa que da fundamentos adicionales a la explicación de Marx acerca de la determinación del valor de la fuerza de trabajo por el tiempo de trabajo socialmente necesario para su producción. Por último, se ilustran las implicaciones de esta perspectiva para los problemas abiertos por el debate marxista sobre el trabajo doméstico.This article addresses the process of production of labour power with a view to re-examining Marx’s stance on the determination of the value of this ‘peculiar commodity’. In order to do so, the article critically reviews the main contributions which have called into question the Marxian analysis. It also offers an alternative argument that develops additional grounds for Marx’s explanation of the determination of the value of labour power by the socially necessary labour time required for its production. No full textDetecting pathogens and mounting immune responses upon infection is crucial for animal health. However, these responses come at a high metabolic price (McKean and Lazzaro, 2011, Kominsky et al., 2010), and avoiding pathogens before infection may be advantageous. The bacterial endotoxins lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are important immune system infection cues (Abbas et al., 2014), but it remains unknown whether animals possess sensory mechanisms to detect them prior to infection. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster display strong aversive responses to LPS and that gustatory neurons expressing Gr66a bitter receptors mediate avoidance of LPS in feeding and egg laying assays. We found the expression of the chemosensory cation channel dTRPA1 in these cells to be necessary and sufficient for LPS avoidance. Furthermore, LPS stimulates Drosophila neurons in a TRPA1-dependent manner and activates exogenous dTRPA1 channels in human cells.
