This book offers a thorough investigation of political dramaturgy within the context of the 2010 Regional Head Elections in Surabaya. It spans six chapters, exploring the historical and theoretical foundations of political dramaturgy and providing a detailed case study of its application in Surabaya's electoral politics. Drawing on Erving Goffman's concepts of dramaturgy, the book illustrates how political interactions resemble theatrical performances, encompassing both "frontstage" and "backstage" elements. The backstage arena includes all the necessary preparations for the actors' performances on the front stage, ranging from research to logistical and technical requirements. In contrast, the front stage focuses on the actors' skills in impression management, which involve face-to-face interactions and the use of technology to effectively communicate political messages and influence public opinion. Overall, this book highlights the importance of dramaturgical elements in shaping electoral strategies and provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of cultural, social, and political factors that affect the dynamics of electoral politics at the local level. Keywords: political dramaturgy; regional elections; electoral politic

The Rise of Ethno-nationalism in the Globalisation Era: Comparative Analysis of AfD Germany and BJP India

    No full text
As integral components of the global movement, both nationalism and globalisation play significant roles in the rise of ethno-nationalism, particularly influenced by the emergence of social media. Today, nationalist populist figures can easily and extensively disseminate their values through various social media platforms, effectively turning this technology into an echo chamber for ethno-nationalist leaders. Their strategy to spread influence often involves promoting xenophobic propaganda narratives that glorify their supreme goals and identity while alienating minorities perceived as threats. This article critically examines the rise of ethno-nationalism, and the crucial role played by social media, focusing on two political parties: the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Germany and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India. Using qualitative descriptive methods and a case study approach, this research reveals that in both cases, ethno-nationalist leaders utilise Islamophobic populism by alienating Islam and framing Muslims as "the other." Furthermore, social media serves as a critical tool for ethno-nationalist parties to spread their agenda and strengthen connections with their supporters

Development of natural gas and pipeline capacity markets in the United States

Deregulation of the U.S. natural gas industry has been under way since the late 1970s. The industry was deregulated to create competitive markets in natural gas and its pipeline transportation, in the expectation that competition would guide transactions toward a more efficient outcome. The author provides an overview of the deregulation process and its effect on the development and functioning of natural gas and gas transportation markets in the United States. He analyzes the trading of pipeline capacity in primary and secondary markets and the regulation of pipeline transportation, identifies mechanisms that pipeline companies use to coordinate bilateral transactions, and summarizes deregulation's main achievements in the U.S. natural gas industry. Industry achievements in the past 15 years show that expectations were not realistic. The United States enjoys a highly competitive interstate transportation market. Both markets have benefited from the deregulation of natural gas production and marketing and the liberalization of natural gas prices. Introducing open access to interstate pipelines and their unbundling from gas sales has allowed end users to participate in the efficiency gains in upstream markets. All this has contributed to declining retail prices for all major consumer categories. Deregulation is far from complete, however. Current regulation of interstate pipeline companies and the secondary transportation market does not promote efficient allocation of transportation contracts. Flexible pricing of transportation contracts should be introduced in both the primary and secondary transportation markets. But deregulation of retail markets remains the most important task and the bigger challenge facing industry regulators. Small-volume end users (such as residential or commercial customers) are captive to local distribution utilities, without access to competitive wholesale markets. All end users should be able to choose a natural gas supplier and receive natural gas at the minimum cost to society.Oil&Gas,Water and Industry,Markets and Market Access,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Transport and Environment,Water and Industry,Oil Refining&Gas Industry,Oil&Gas,Carbon Policy and Trading

Debunking the normalisation of sexual violence on screen through #MeToo movement: The case of Hollywood films

    No full text
This study examines the denormalisation of sexual violence against women in the #MeToo movement-themed Hollywood films. The strong presence of the social-political #MeToo movement in the past decade has influenced Hollywood films. The movement plays a major role in increasing public awareness of how devastating sexual abuse is against women and in challenging the current patriarchal system in society. This study uses descriptive research methods and adopts thematic analysis to critically analyse the denormalisation of sexual violence against women in Hollywood films with the #MeToo movement as their theme. This research used three Hollywood films as the units of analyses: On the Record, Athlete A, and Bombshell. This study found that these films are essential in denormalising sexual violence against women on screen. The findings show the three important characteristics shared among these three films. First, they shed light on the existence of the power imbalance between the perpetrators and victims. Second, they show the transformation of female victims of sexual violence into feminist figures. Last, they denormalise sexual abuse. The findings benefit academics who are interested in movie and gender studies as well as practitioners who promote gender equality and women’s rights. Keywords : Hollywood film; the #MeToo Movement; Sexual Violence; Denormalisation of Sexual Violenc

    Agent-based macroeconomics - a baseline model

    No full text
This paper develops a baseline agent-based macroeconomic model and contrasts it with the common dynamic stochastic general equilibrium approach. Although simple, the model can reproduce a lot of the stylized facts of business cycles. The author argues that agent-based modeling is an adequate response to the recently expressed criticism of macroeconomic methodology. It does not depend on the strict assumption of rationality and allows for aggregate behavior that is more than simply a replication of microeconomic optimization decisions. At the same time it allows for absolutely consistent micro foundations. Most importantly, it does not depend on equilibrium assumptions or fictitious auctioneers and does therefore not rule out coordination failures, instability and crisis by definition. --agent-based modeling, complex adaptive systems, microfoundations of macroeconomics
