Performance of a fast digital integrator in on-field magnetic measurements for particle accelerators
A software framework for developing measurement applications under variable requirements
A framework for easily developing software for measurement and test applications under highly
and fast-varying requirements is proposed. The framework allows the software quality, in terms of
flexibility, usability, and maintainability, to be maximized. Furthermore, the development effort is
reduced and finalized, by relieving the test engineer of development details. The framework can be
configured for satisfying a large set of measurement applications in a generic field for an industrial
test division, a test laboratory, or a research center. As an experimental case study, the design, the implementation,
and the assessment inside the application to a measurement scenario of magnet testing
at the European Organization for Nuclear Research is reported
High-performance permeability measurements: A case study at CERN
An accurate and flexible system for magnetic permeability measurements is described. In particular, effects such as eddy currents and signal drift are minimized by exploiting the main system features: (i) high-performance digital integration by means of a digital integrator, with a theoretical resolution of 10 ppt using an 18-Bit A/D Converter at 800 kS/s, specifically developed for magnetic measurements, and (ii) flexibility of the measurement procedure for overcoming magnetic field non-uniformity errors through a procedure specifically generated by means of a flexible software framework. In particular, the theoretical background underlying the measurement, the procedure, and the system architecture are illustrated, as well as experimental results from testing a non-oriented steel are described
A Petri Net-Based Software Synchronizer for Automatic Measurement Systems
A Petri net (PN)-based approach to software synchronization in automatic measurement systems is proposed. Tasks are synchronized by means of a PN modeling an execution graph, where nodes represent tasks and arrows among nodes point out time succession among the corresponding tasks. This allows software synchronization to be abstracted above the code level by leaving the test engineer to work at a more intuitive level. As an experimental case study, the design, the implementation, and the application to a measurement scenario of the PN-based synchronizer inside the software framework for testing magnets at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) are illustrated
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
CAS course on "Normal- and Superconducting Magnets", 19 November - 02 December 2023, St. Pölten, Austria
The measurement of the magnetic field is often the final verification of the design and fabrication process of a magnets for particle accelerators.
In most cases, when seeking high accuracy, the measurement technique and its realization can result in a considerable effort. The lecture describes
the most used field-measurement techniques based of flux-metric methods:
i)the rotating coil method gives a complete two-dimensional description of the magnetic field in terms of normal and skew multipoles;
ii) static coils are employed in case of fast-ramped or curved magnets;
iii) the single stretched wire is the reference instrument to measure field
integrals and to find the magnetic axis
