    No full text
Tunjukkan Kami Jalan Yang Lurus: Siri Fotografi I & II is a work produced against the backdrop of a straight road landscape. This location is taken in an area located in the state of Perlis. This photography was processed in a panoramic technique and was photographed in black and white. In addition to capturing the subject accurately, this series of photographs is produced with difficulty to be descriptively accurate and neutral in an interpretive and evatative manner (Barret, 2006). This work was adapted from the artist’s experience in navigating the world of learning to the ivory tower. The verse Tunjukkan Kami Jalan Yang Lurus (meaning “Keep us on the right path”) itself encompasses the artist’s memory of all those involved in teaching and educating themselves to become one of the successful and useful human beings today. With the permission of Allah S.W.T, the sacrifices of teachers and educators who contribute to what artists have today are a service that will never be forgotten. Be a motivation and inspiration for the artist to get on with life

Subject selection: Adaptation of candid and street photography in Bandung City / Mohammad Firdaus Azman, Andang Iskandar and Yosa Fiandra

    No full text
First time stepping in Bandung is an unforgettable and spectacular adventure as it not only leads to academic collaboration but is also a decisive moment for the photographer. Upon arrival in Bandung, the camera lens has not stopped spinning and the photographer is bubbling with excitement to enjoy the splendid and breathtaking iconic tourist attractions of the country, which are vastly different from the landscapes in Malaysia. Due to limitation of time and equipment, and the environment beyond expectation, the photographer endeavours to challenge himself to get as much (subject matter) as he could in capturing candid and street portraits. When shooting around Bandung, practically everyone must work in a fast-paced environment (point & shoot images), as the photographer also needs to simplify his subject on the spot. The objective of article is simply to define content and analysis (subject matter), and expression of the artwork from the perspective of the artist. This study generally going to discuss based on the artwork (photograph) from the artists, especially in subject matter selection. The finding of this research justifies that with this kind of theme (candid and street photo) we as photographers can employ our tools and techniques to compose almost anything into a strong photography subject, according to our own perspective. In conclusion, shooting photographs in Bandung City is quite a fantastic experience which will always be remembered, yet it is suggested that we always need to keep in mind the elements of composition the technique, your vision, and your imagination, that will best help you communicate what you are trying to express in the photograph

Fatigue Life Assessment of API Steel Grade X65 Pipeline Using a Modified Basquin Parameter of the Magnetic Flux Leakage Signal

    No full text
This paper presents a modified fatigue life model of the Basquin equation using the stress parameter of the magnetic flux leakage signal. Most pipeline steels experience cyclic loading during service and the influence of the load history makes assessing fatigue behaviour more difficult. The magnetic flux leakage signal’s response to a uniaxial cyclic test of API X65 steel was measured with eight levels of ultimate tensile stress loads. The influence of dH(y)/dx on fatigue failure was the main concern in this study, the aim being to represent localised stress parameters in the modified Basquin equation. Both fatigue lives, experimental and predicted from the modified Basquin equation, were validated through reliability analysis, producing a 60% value when approaching 1.8 × 105 cycles. The fatigue data from the experiment produced a higher mean-cycle-to-failure value than the prediction data, with slightly different values of 3.37 × 105 and 3.28 × 105. Additionally, the modified Basquin equation’s predicted and the experimental fatigue lives were found to have a high R2 correlation value of 0.9022. The Pearson correlation also showed a good relationship between the fatigue lives, with an r value of 0.9801. Finally, the modified Basquin equation based on dH(y)/dx signals provided an accurate and alternative method for durability assessment

From plural society to Bangsa Malaysia : ethnicity and nationalism in the politics of nation-building in Malaysia

    No full text
The question of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysian politics. Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence spawn a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis), the project of nation-building remained a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. This study investigates the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision of constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or 'a united Malaysian nation' enshrined in Mahathir's Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991. The aim of the study is firstly, to examine the underlying socio-political parameters that shaped and influenced the politics of nation-building in the country, and secondly, to explore the viability of the project of Bangsa Malaysia in the context of the daunting challenges involved in the process of nation-building. Drawing from a range of theoretical frameworks as well as from both primary and secondary data, the study contends that, based on the Malaysian experience, the potent interplay between the forces of ethnicity and nationalism constitute the crux of the problems in the politics of nation-building in Malaysia. This dialectic it is argued, stems from the prevalence of the varying perceptions of 'nation-of-intent' within and across ethnic groups. These phenomena have not only shaped the pattern of ethnic political mobilisation in the country, but above all, laid the most complex set of obstacles in the path of the project of nation-building. This study argues that the project of constructing the Bangsa Malaysia therefore, can be seen as a significant attempt by the state to reconcile the varying ethnic ideologies of nation-of-intent. It can also be considered as an attempt to consolidate Malay nationalism and cultural pluralism, thus, depicting 'the nation' as a 'mosaic of cultures', or reflecting a creation of 'a supra-ethnic' national identity. However, the viability of the envisaged project is yet to be tested. The concept itself is still vague to many people and the challenges ahead are enormous, involving political, economic, socio-cultural and religious issues. Indeed, the project risks becoming the 'latest' in the series of competing notions of nation-of-intent circulating in Malaysia. This study contends that whilst, to some extent, the socio-political landscape of Malaysian society has been rapidly changing, especially under the eighteen years of Mahathir's reign, ethnicity still pervades Malaysian political life. This study differs from many previous studies on nation-building in Malaysia which have mainly focused on either the historical dimensions or those which have examined the impact of key national policies. As such, it is hoped that this study would be able to provide an alternative perspective in the analysis of ethnic relations and nation-building in Malaysia, thus broadening the understanding of Malaysian politics and society

Detection of Uniaxial Fatigue Stress under Magnetic Flux Leakage Signals using Morlet Wavelet

    No full text
This paper demonstrates the application of continuous wavelet transform technique for magnetic flux leakage signal generated during a uniaxial fatigue test. This is a consideration as the magnetic signal is weak and susceptible to being influenced by an external magnetic field. The magnetic flux leakage signal response of API steel grade X65 is determined using Metal Magnetic Memory under cyclic load conditions ranging from 50% to 85% of the UTS. To facilitate further signal analysis, the magnetic flux gradient, the dH(y)/dx signal were converted from a length base into time series in this study. Magnetic flux leakage readings indicated a maximum UTS load of 56.5 (A/m)/mm at 85%, where a higher load resulted in a higher reading and the signal contained Morlet wavelet coefficient energy of 1.02×106 µe2/Hz. As increasing percentages of UTS loads were applied, the signal analysis revealed an increasing linear trend in the dH(y)/dx and wavelet coefficient energy. The analysis revealed a strong correlation between the wavelet coefficient energy and the dH(y)/dx amplitude, as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.8572. Hence, this technique can provide critical information about magnetic flux leakage signals that can be used to detect high stress concentration zones

Decoupling cross-quadrature correlations using passive operations

    No full text
Quadrature correlations between subsystems of a Gaussian quantum state are fully characterized by its covariance matrix. For example, the covariance matrix determines the amount of entanglement or decoherence of the state. Here, we establish when it is possible to remove correlations between conjugate quadratures using only passive operations. Such correlations are usually undesired and arise due to experimental cross-quadrature contamination. Using the Autonne-Takagi factorization, we present necessary and sufficient conditions to determine when such removal is possible. Our proof is constructive, and whenever it is possible we obtain an explicit expression for the required passive operation.Ministry of Education (MOE)National Research Foundation (NRF)Published versionWe acknowledge H.
