Ethics of technology and design ethics in socio-technical systems investigating the role of the designer

This paper addresses many of the issues deriving from both design activity itself and the introduction of technology into everyday life. Relevant authors like Papanek (1984), Thackara (2005) and Manzini (2006) warned about the risks of design activity, as well as the consequences of bringing products to the world. Papanek defined design as the second most harmful profession one can practice, while Thackara claims that design is the cause of many troubling situations in our world (Mink, 2016). Manzini advocates the imminent need for a paradigm shift towards both a more sustainable design and way of living. In Design for the Real World, Papanek pointed out that designers have a social and moral responsibility for the consequences of their innovations (Mink, 2016). For this reason, first we cannot ignore the advice, but also, we genuinely believe that designers should include ethical principles in their education. This paper seeks to address design ethics focusing on socio-technical systems and the new challenges introduced by both the Internet of things and artificial intelligence. The methodological framework combines the value sensitive design developed in human computer interaction (HCI) and computer ethics with a methodology based on need, requirements and performances developed in architecture. This approach is applied to the development of connected appliances, to conduct our reflections on an applied case study. Some guidelines are drawn at the end of this paper to guide designers in achieving a greater understanding of the ethical implications involved in the design process, establishing the responsibilities and limits of the designer

Serum TSH and risk of papillary thyroid cancer in nodular thyroid disease.

    No full text
CONTEXT: TSH is the main factor involved in the control of proliferation of thyrocytes. Recently, a strong relationship between serum TSH and risk of thyroid malignancy has been reported. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to review published papers about the relationship between serum TSH and frequency of differentiated thyroid cancer. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: PubMed was used to identify studies focused on the relationship between TSH and differentiated thyroid cancer. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: In patients with nodular thyroid disease, the risk of thyroid malignancy increases with serum TSH, and even within normal ranges, higher TSH values are associated with a higher frequency and more advanced stage of thyroid cancer. The likelihood of papillary thyroid carcinoma is reduced when TSH is lower, as in thyroid autonomy, and increased when TSH is higher, as in thyroid autoimmunity. Treatment with l-thyroxine (LT4), which reduces serum TSH, is associated with significantly lower risk of developing clinically detectable thyroid cancer. CONCLUSIONS: TSH plays a key role in the development of clinically detectable thyroid cancer, and LT4 treatment reduces the risk of thyroid malignancy in patients with nodular thyroid disease. According to the guidelines of the main scientific societies, LT4 therapy is not currently recommended for the treatment of patients with nodular goiter. Even if the available data are not sufficient to advise LT4 treatment in all patients with nodular goiter with the aim of reducing the risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma, we propose that this indication should be reconsidered, taking into account recent evidence reported in the literature

An innovative method for sizing actuating systems of manipulators with generic tasks

    No full text
This paper describes an innovative method for the design of the driving system for manipulators whose task is a generic handling within a workspace, in particular robotic simulators. For those mechanisms the choice of an actuating system of the correct size is particularly arduous. As a matter of fact, tipically the requirements for the machine are described in the workspace, but the intrinsically complex kinematics make difficult to understand which is the case that requires the highest dynamic performances. Analyzing all the possible combinations of the parameters that characterize the motion of the end-effector would require an incredible computational burden, and that’s the reason why a statistical method is taken into account: in particular the sizing process described in this paper relies on the Monte Carlo Method. In order to show the its effectiveness, its implementation in a particular application is presented

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
