    A) Association between migraine and Celiac disease: results from a preliminary case-control and therapeutic study

OBJECTIVES: Subclinical celiac disease (CD) has been associated with various neurological disorders, the most common being neuropathy and cerebellar ataxia. The aims of the present study were to assess the following: 1) the prevalence of CD in patients affected by migraine; 2) whether there are regional cerebral blood flow abnormalities in migraine patients with CD compared to migraine patients without CD; and 3) the effects of a gluten free diet in migraine patients with CD. METHODS: A total of 90 patients affected by idiopathic migraine were enrolled, and 236 blood donors were used as controls. Serum IgG antitransglutaminase (TgA) and IgA antiendomysial (EmA) were measured. In positive cases, diagnosis was confirmed endoscopically. A gluten free diet was started in the patients diagnosed with CD, who were followed for 6 months. A single photon emission CT brain study was performed before and after a gluten free diet. RESULTS: Four of 90 (4.4%; 95% CI = 1.2-11.0) migraine patients were found to have CD compared with 0.4% (95% CI = 0.01-2.3) blood donor controls (p < 0.05). During the 6 months of gluten free diet, one of the four patients had no migraine attacks, and the remaining three patients experienced an improvement in frequency, duration, and intensity of migraine. Single photon emission CT studies showed a regional baseline reduction in brain tracer uptake in all four patients. Such reduction in uptake completely resolved at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that a significant proportion of patients with migraine may have CD, and that a gluten free diet may lead to a improvement in the migraine in these patients

A diachronic study into the distributions of two Italo-Romance synthetic conditional forms

Two distinct conditional paradigms are available to speakers of Italian, derived from the Latin periphrases cantare habui/cantare habebam. The aim of this thesis is to describe and explain their patterns of attestation in the earliest northern Italian and Tuscan texts, which date from between 1200 and 1400. Textual analysis showed that while the cantare habui periphrasis was native to both areas, the use of the cantare habebam periphrasis differed in the northern and central dialects. In the northern dialects, the cantare habebam periphrasis was attested in all genres over the whole time period, whereas in the Tuscan dialects it only appeared in literary genres. Moreover, although the northern texts attested both periphrases consistently over time in every genre, only Tuscan poetry followed this pattern. Other genres attested reflexes of the cantare habebam periphrasis for short periods in the fourteenth century. These results suggest that different influences resulted in different patterns of conditional use in the two areas. This thesis postulates that in the northern Italo-Romance dialects the cantare habebam periphrasis was introduced through the proximity to, and influence of, Provençal. Although the use of reflexes of cantare habebam was reinforced in the north by the Sicilian school of poets, the dual nature of the sources meant that it was also retained in prose, and thence into modern dialect use. In contrast, reflexes of the cantare habebam periphrasis were introduced into central Italy through the Sicilian school alone. Although it appeared in prose texts, this was a sporadic phenomenon, resulting from imitation of the influential poetic texts. Because there was no prose source for reflexes of the cantare habebam periphrasis, it did not enter non-literary genres and quickly disappeared from literary prose genres. The cantare habebam periphrasis eventually disappeared entirely from Tuscan poetry as well, and is not attested at all in the modern central dialects

UAL Report on 14 years of clinical experiences

In the recent time the interest about UAL is greatly increased partly because with this technique it seems possible to guarantee constant and sure results, and partly because the machine manufactures have worked to make this procedure well known in a complete and full way. With the major diffusion of the UAL the casisistic have increased too, the indications have widened, the complications began to show up, and the limit of the procedure have begun to be defined. In these years the instrumentation constantly evolved, from the initial devices designed for plastic surgery manufactured by SMEI, until the more recent models on the actual market. Purpose of this study is to compare the considerations made when the senior author firstly experienced UAL 14 years ago, with the actual orientations. The Authors refer about their experience , exposing a comprehensive casistic developed with the use of different machines: starting with the first ultrasonic liposuction performed with neurosurgical instruments, to follow with 1st generation devices for lipolisis , until the recent sophisticated machines that allow a more wide use of the UAL. The results of the studies done in these years with biochemical and morphologic techniques on some peculiar aspects of UAL versus traditional techniques are shown

miR-135b Coordinates Progression of ErbB2-Driven Mammary Carcinomas through Suppression of MID1 and MTCH2

In an attempt to reveal deregulated miRNAs associated with the progression of carcinomas developed in BALB-neuT transgenic mice, we found increased expression of miR-135b during malignancy. Relevantly, we observed that miR-135b is up-regulated in basal or normal-like human breast cancers, and it correlates with patient survival and early metastatization. Therefore, we investigated its biological functions by modulating its expression (up- or down-regulation) in mammary tumor cells. Although no effect was observed on proliferation in cell culture and in orthotopically injected mice, miR-135b was able to control cancer cell stemness in a mammosphere assay, anchorage-independent growth in vitro, and lung cancer cell dissemination in mice after tail vein injections. Focusing on the miR-135b molecular mechanism, we observed that miR-135b controls malignancy via its direct targets, midline 1 (MID1) and mitochondrial carrier homolog 2 (MTCH2), as proved by biochemical and functional rescuing/phenocopying experiments. Consistently, an anti-correlation between miR-135b and MID1 or MTCH2 was found in human primary tumor samples. In conclusion, our research led us to the identification of miR-135b and its targets, MID1 and MTCH2, as relevant coordinators of mammary gland tumor progression

Il diritto all’unità familiare e il superiore interesse del minore prevalgono sulle ragioni dell’espulsione (ordine pubblico e sicurezza) sulla base di una valutazione ponderata del caso concreto

The essay focuses on the recent case on the condition of migrants' minor children in the hypothesis of repatriation orders issued against one of their parents. In particular, the Author analysis the hard balancing of contrasting values, which Court have to provide for, between public order and the rights to family unity (collective) and best interest of the child (individual). The cases commented are both from ECHR and Italian Corte di Cassazione
