Postcard sent to James G. Finn, in St. Albans, Vermont, reporting on the recovery of his son, John R. Finn, from a wound to his hand, signed by Joseph C. Di Fiore on 4 April 1945 and postmarked 9 April 1945.John R. Finn's education at Norwich University was interrupted by World War II. During the war, he served in the 8th Armored Division of the U. S. Army in the European Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart after receiving a hand wound. He returned to Norwich University after the war and graduated with a BA degree in English in 1946. On plane waves in diluted relativistic cold plasmas

    No full text
We briefly report on some exact results [G. Fiore, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 47 (2014) 225501] regarding plane waves in a relativistic cold plasma. If the plasma, initially at rest, is reached by a transverse plane electromagnetic travelling-wave, then its motion has a very simple dependence on this wave in the limit of zero density, otherwise can be determined by an iterative procedure whose accuracy decreases with time or the plasma density. Thus one can describe in particular the impact of a very intense and short laser pulse onto a plasma and determine conditions for the "slingshot effect" [G. Fiore, R. Fedele, U. De Angelis, "The slingshot effect: a possible new laser-driven high energy acceleration mechanism for electrons", arXiv:1309.1400] to occur. The motion in vacuum of a charged test particle subject to a wave of the same kind is also determined, for any initial velocity

A ``slingshot'' laser-driven acceleration mechanism of plasma electrons

We briefly report on the recently proposed [G. Fiore, R. Fedele, U. de Angelis, Phys. Plasmas 21 (2014), 113105], [G. Fiore, S. De Nicola, arXiv:1509.04656], electron acceleration mechanism named ``slingshot effect": under suitable conditions the impact of an ultra-short and ultra-intense laser pulse against the surface of a low-density plasma is expected to cause the expulsion of a bunch of superficial electrons with high energy in the direction opposite to that of the pulse propagation; this is due to the interplay of the huge ponderomotive force, huge longitudinal field arising from charge separation, and the finite size of the laser spot

Twisted Quadrics and Algebraic Submanifolds in Rn

    No full text
We propose a general procedure to construct noncommutative deformations of an algebraic submanifold M of Rn, specializing the procedure [G. Fiore, T. Weber, Twisted submanifolds ofRn, arXiv:2003.03854] valid for smooth submanifolds. We use the framework of twisted differential geometry of Aschieri et al. (Class. Quantum Grav. 23, 1883–1911, 2006), whereby the commutative pointwise product is replaced by the ⋆-product determined by a Drinfel’d twist. We actually simultaneously construct noncommutative deformations of all the algebraic submanifolds Mc that are level sets of the fa(x), where fa(x) = 0 are the polynomial equations solved by the points of M, employing twists based on the Lie algebra Ξt of vector fields that are tangent to all the Mc. The twisted Cartan calculus is automatically equivariant under twisted Ξt. If we endow Rn with a metric, then twisting and projecting to normal or tangent components commute, projecting the Levi-Civita connection to the twisted M is consistent, and in particular a twisted Gauss theorem holds, provided the twist is based on Killing vector fields. Twisted algebraic quadrics can be characterized in terms of generators and ⋆-polynomial relations. We explicitly work out deformations based on abelian or Jordanian twists of all quadrics in R3 except ellipsoids, in particular twisted cylinders embedded in twisted Euclidean R3 and twisted hyperboloids embedded in twisted Minkowski R3 [the latter are twisted (anti-)de Sitter spaces dS2, AdS2]

The x_i-eigenvalue problem on some new fuzzy spheres

We study the eigenvalue equation for the "Cartesian coordinates" observables x_i (i=1,2) on the fully O(2)-covariant fuzzy circle S^1_L and x_i (i=1,2,3) on the fully O(3)-covariant fuzzy 2-sphere S^2_L introduced in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451]. We show that the spectrum and eigenvectors of x_i ful fill a number of properties which are expected for x_i to approximate well the corresponding coordinate operator of a quantum particle forced to stay on the unit sphere
