Corporate network data - Finland
We collected information on the CEOs and boards of directors of 100 of the largest companies in Finland for specific benchmark years: namely, 1912, 1927, 1938, 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004. We only included the boards of directors, but not the (non-compulsory ) supervisory boards (hallintoneuvosto/förvaltningsråd ). We selected 100 companies from the manufacturing industry, financial industry, trade and services and the utilities. We collected information about managing directors/ CEOs and boards of directors for these companies. The data for the period before World War II were collected from archival material in the National Board of Patents and Registration and several printed publications (Hjerppe 1979; Banker och Aktiebolag i Finland). After World War II, the sample was based on the list of biggest firms in Finland that is published yearly in the economic weekly magazine, Talouselämä, which has collected and published lists of the biggest companies in Finland since the early 1970s. The information on board members and CEOs was collected from a variety of printed and primary sources. Unfortunately, in the benchmark years 1974, 1984 and 1994, some companies had been omitted because of missing information. The total dataset consisted of 329 firms.
We also look at ‘big linkers’. We focus primarily on the number of positions a person holds. The data from each of the seven sample years were first coded into Pajek (software for network analysis) as a 2-mode network consisting of companies and their board members (De Nooy and Batagelj 2011). The 2-mode network was then transformed into two 1-mode networks, one for the companies and the other for the members of the board. In the 1-mode networks, the businesses are connected to each other by common board members, whereas the directors are connected by having a seat on a board or being a CEO in a specific company

Rolling stock-based technical report on the coordination of track gauges (1,435 mm/1,524 mm) in Northern Finland : Extending the European track gauge to Finland via Haparanda/Tornio
This study examines the use of transport solutions regarding the technological aspects of rolling stock and loading options to enable cross-border traffic between Finland and Sweden when the track gauge changes from 1,435 mm to 1,524 mm. The systems under examination may be, for example, adjustable or interchangeable wheelsets or different transfer loading solutions. The purpose of the study is to gather background information on rolling stock systems and loading methods that allow rolling stock to operate on both the 1,524-mm and 1,435-mm gauge network without the need to modify or extend the track infrastructure.
This report is part of a study commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (LVM) and carried out by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency on various options for extending the European track gauge connection from Haparanda to Finland. This means either the introduction of possible new rolling stock solutions or the need to build rail connections with European track gauge from Sweden to Finland
Detrital zircon geochronology of Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks from Jämsä, Central Finland
In this short communication, we present new detrital single grain zircon U-Pb data for six metasedimentary rock samples from Jämsä, Central Finland. Four samples are from the southern parts of the Central Finland granitoid complex and two from metasedimentary rocks mixed with the volcanic belts bordering it to the south. Based on the obtained results, the detrital zircon populations of all the samples are similar, i.e. they are bimodal with peaks at 2.05–1.95 Ga and 2.90–2.70 Ga. The maximum depositional ages of the individual samples are interpreted as 1.93–1.90 Ga. Thus, the zircon populations are similar to both the Pirkanmaa migmatite belt, which borders the
granitoid complex to the south, and the lowermost members of the volcano-sedimentary Tampere group to the west from our study area. The results further strengthen the similarities between the volcano-sedimentary successions in Tampere and Jämsä areas. Similarities between the detrital zircon populations within, and south of the Central Finland granitoid complex need to be taken into account in further refinements of regional tectonic models
The morphostratigraphic imprint of the Baltic Ice Lake drainage event in southern Finland
AbstractDigital elevation models, based on laser scanning imageries (LiDAR-DEM) and aided by ground penetrating radar (GPR) data, were used to study glaciofluvial Gilbert-type ice-contact deltas in the Younger Dryas Salpausselkä end-moraine zone in southern Finland. The geomorphological data analysed were used to reconstruct the water-level drop of the late glacial Baltic Ice Lake to the early Holocene Yoldia Sea and tie these changes to a wider stratigraphic context. The results indicate that the sudden drainage event at around 11 650 cal. yrs BP left its imprint not only on the varved sediments but also on ice-contact glaciofluvial deltas in the Second Salpausselkä zone throughout southern Finland. This morphostratigraphic boundary can be placed at locations where the ice-contact deltas occur at two different levels; the higher-level deltas formed during the Baltic Ice Lake B III water-level stage and the lower-level deltas during the Yoldia Sea Y I water-level stage. This morphostratigraphically defined boundary in southern Finland marks the Pleistocene/Holocene chronostratigraphic boundary in southern Finland and shows the corresponding positions of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet’s Finnish Lake District Ice Lobe and the Baltic Sea Ice Lobe.Abstract

Visualizing the Corded Ware past : art, archaeology, and heritage-making at Myyrmäki, southern Finland
AbstractIn 2021, a large mural depicting a Corded Ware vessel was painted on the urban suburb of Myyrmäki in southern Finland. According to the artists working with the art piece, the mural serves as an informative sign for a nearby Stone Age settlement site while also aiming to create a sense of belonging for the ‘rootless people of Myyrmäki’. In this paper, I argue that the mural can be understood as a memoryscape, and in this sense, it acts as a materialization of the heritage-making process. At the same time, however, the mural combines prehistoric archaeology with contemporary topics such as antiracism and climate activism.Abstract

Occupational injuries and diseases among commercial fishers in Finland 1996–2015
Background: Commercial fishing is recognised as one of the most hazardous professions worldwide. In Finland, commercial fishing has some special characteristics, including fishing on ice during frozen waters, and pluriactivity of the fisher family to gain additional income. The goal of this study was to describe injury characteristics among commercial fishers in Finland during the years 1996–2015. With this information, we wish to promote creation of effective safety campaigns and interventions.
Materials and methods: The data for this study was acquired from The Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution, who handles the mandatory pension and occupational injury insurance of Finnish commercial fishers. Descriptive statistics was used to categorise and analyse the data that comprised the anonymized insurance history of 1954 insured fishers and reports on 1135 compensated injuries, 11 fatalities, and 53 occupational disease cases.
Results: The results show, that the injury rate of Finnish commercial fishers is high. Forty per cent of the fishing-related injuries occur aboard or when entering or leaving the vessel, while 37% happened ashore, and 11% on sea or lake ice. The most common type of incident is preceded by a slip, trip, or sway followed by a fall to lower level. The injuries result in a median disability length of 21 days. An elevated risk for Finnish (vs. Swedish) speaking, as well as for male fishers was found. The occupational diseases of the studied population were for the most part results of manual, repetitive and/or physically straining work due to e.g. hauling in fishing equipment. Due to small numbers and lack of case data, it is not possible to make any further analysis of the 11 fatalities, which were all drownings.
Conclusions: Based on our findings, injury prevention should be targeted, besides preventing fatalities because of drowning, at mitigating the risks for slips, trips, and falls both aboard and ashore
