No full textAs with any exhibition, intellectual and practical concerns combined to shape Communities in Communication: Languages and Cultures in the Low Countries, 1450-1530. In practical terms, I was keen to showcase the substantial holdings of the John Rylands Library from and about this dynamic culture. The corpus has been built up over more than a century: one manuscript, French MS 144, was acquired as recently as 1997.1 Yet libraries and users worldwide can easily underestimate how much material relates to the Low Countries. Catalogues invariably classify documents by language and/or medium; a practice exemplified by the very shelfmark of French MS 144, and which obscures the connections between the cultural products of a region where books were produced in Dutch, French, English, and Latin, and in both manuscript and print.2 Communities in Communication was conceived partly to counter this tendency towards fragmentation

No full textIl volume affronta un tema poco conosciuto ma molto evocato nella pubblicistica: quello della partecipazione femminile alla Croce rossa italiana fin dalla nascita, ovvero dalla sottoscrizione della Convenzione di Ginevra nel 1864. Sono così indagate le diverse forme offerte dall'istituzione a coloro che per vari motivi non intendevano assistere i feriti, ma preferivano raccogliere fondi e mezzi militando nelle Sezioni femminili della Croce rossa. Dette Sezioni, all'origine del Corpo delle Infermiere volontarie, hanno rappresentato un'assoluta novità per le donne dell'epoca la cui vita era confinata in ambiti più modesti e ristretti. La progressiva evoluzione delle Sezioni ha dato vita nel 1955 al Comitato nazionale femminile tutt'ora attivo, vitale e impegnato nelle emergenze umanitarie. Lo studio, che è stato condotto nell'Archivio storico del Comitato nazionale femminile, ha utilizzato le relazioni sulle attività locali, la corrispondenza e immagini preziose selezionate in un ambito temporale che va dal 1893 al 2005. Si è potuto evidenziare così la capacità del settore di adeguarsi ai tempi tenendo conto dei passaggi istituzionali che hanno interessato la vita della Croce rossa italiana nel suo complesso

A Human Rights Approach to Environmental Health
No full textThis chapter explores the interface between health and the environment through the human rights prism, focusing on the environmental dimension of the right to health and on the now widely recognized right to a healthy, safe and clean environment. To this end, the chapter intends to offers a comprehensive analysis of the relevant provisions contained in human rights treaties and the obligations stemming therefrom. The review of these legal sources is completed by a critical assessment of the case law produced by regional human rights bodies and their evolutive interpretation of individual rights and corresponding State obligations in this field, with a special focus on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. The aim of this legal analysis is to evaluate the added value of a human rights approach to environmental health litigation, with a view to best achieving the overarching goal of public health protection from environmental harm. The author highlights that human rights can be used in court as effective tools to protect public health against the adverse effects of environmental degradation and severe pollution. She also stresses that the potential of human rights bodies in the field of environmental health is yet fully unexpressed, but further positive developments towards the protection of collective and intergenerational rights related to the environment and human health can be achieved thanks to the dynamic and evolutive approach adopted by these bodies and through the virtuous circle created by judicial cross-fertilization
A Multitude of Women: The Challenges of the Contemporary Italian Novel
No full textA Multitude of Women looks at the ways in which both Italian literary tradition and external influences have assisted Italian women writers in rethinking the theoretical and aesthetic ties between author, text, and readership in the construction of the novel. Stefania Lucamante discusses the valuable contributions that Italian women writers have made to the contemporary novel and illustrates the relevance of the novelistic examples set by their predecessors. She addresses various discursive communities, reading works by Di Lascia, Ferrante, Vinci, and others with reference to intertextuality and the theories of Elsa Morante and Simone de Beauvoir.
This study identifies a positive deviation from literary and ideological orthodoxy, a deviation that helps give meaning to the Italian novel and to transform the traditional notion of the canon in Italian literature. Lucamante argues that this is partly due to the merits of women writers and their ability to eschew obsolete patterns in narrative while favoring forms that are more attuned to the ever-changing needs of society. She shows that contemporary novels by women authors mirror a shift from previous trends in which the need for female emancipation interfered with the actual literary and aesthetic significance of the novel. A Multitude of Women offers a new epistemology of the novel and will appeal to those interested in women's writing, readership, Italian studies, and literary studies in general

the following nursing schools: University School of Nursing and Midwifery (1946-1951), Public School of Nursing and Midwifery (1949-1951), Public School Of Nursing (1950-1964), Public Medical School of Nursing (1964-1971), Department of Nursing of the Medical Vocational
College No 1 (1971-1981), and Anna Rydlówna Department of Nursing of the Medical Vocational College No 1 (1982-2001). The
school was localised in Cracow, 25 Kopernika St. until 1975, and then was moved to a new location - 12 Michałowskiego St. The aim of the study was the recollection of Stefania Poznańska, PhD, a nurse, teacher, tutor of nursing, author of multiple research studies
and publications, a person dedicated to the development of modern nursing, and last but not least, a great fiend.
The study material is based on a review of personal notes and archive materials gathered by the Institute of Nursing and Midwifery,
Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical Collage, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Also, personal recollections of multiple encounters
with Stefania Poznańska were taken into account. A biography-historical method as well as the review of documents were applied by
the authors. A significant contribution of Stefania Poznańska to the development of modern nursing must be emphasized. This contribution included her
work for the Programme Committee in Cracow for nursing education curriculum at university level as well as specific detailed programs regarding nursing history and ethical issues in nursing care, and the publication of a series of articles on new concept for teaching nursing
profession. Stefania Poznańska was a person open to another human being

No full textIl dizionario di Tarver, The Royal Phraseological English-French, French-English Dictionary, in due volumi (vol. 1, 1845; vol. 2, 1849), pubblicati a Londra, e quello di Millhouse, Dizionario Italiano-Inglese, Inglese-Italiano, anch’esso in due volumi (vol. 1, 1849; vol. 2, 1853), usciti a Milano, hanno visto la luce in anni molto vicini e con obiettivi didattici parzialmente comuni: sono entrambi dizionari bilingui, in entrambi è presente la lingua inglese e sono primariamente rivolti a chi studia, rispettivamente, il francese o l’inglese come lingua straniera. Al contempo sono diversi per struttura e contenuti: il dizionario di Tarver è specialistico, come evidenziato dalla parola ‘phraseological’ fin dal titolo, mentre quello di Millhouse ha scopi generali, anche se è incentrato sulla pronuncia dell’inglese. Le differenze sono in parte dovute ai contesti in cui sono stati prodotti, legati all’insegnamento del francese in Inghilterra e a quello dell’inglese in Italia, e in parte ad approcci linguistico-lessicali e lessicografici più o meno legati alle rispettive tradizioni. La breve analisi delle voci hand e main in Tarver e di hand e mano in Millhouse evidenzia come le modalità di presentazione e di trattamento delle entrate rispondono ai rispettivi obiettivi.Tarver’s Royal Phraseological French-English, English-French Dictionary (vol. 1, 1845; vol. 2, 1849) and Milhouse’s Dizionario Italiano-Inglese, Inglese-Italiano (vol. 1, 1849; vol. 2, 1853) were published at a short distance from each another, respectively in London and in Milan. They are both two-volume bilingual dictionaries which include English, and they partly share their didactic aims: they primarily address learners of French or English respectively as a foreign language. However, their structure and contents differ. Tarver’s dictionary is specialised, as the word ‘phraseology’ shows in the title itself, while Millhouse’s dictionary is a general-purpose one, though with a special focus on English pronunciation. Differences partly depend on their production situational contexts, with reference to French learning in England as opposed to English learning in Italy, and partly on the respective linguistic, lexical, and lexicographic traditions behind their approaches. A brief comparative analysis of the entries hand and main in Tarver’s dictionary and of hand and mano in Millhouse’s one is meant to show if and how their presentation modes and treatment meet their authors’ (and prospective users’) aims
