Why semantics cannot be but cognitive. Coseriu’s criticism of cognitive semantics

    No full text
In a 1997 paper, Violi wondered whether semantics could be non–cogni-tive. This question is still significant since, in the last decades, cognitive semantics has been thought of as the more suitable paradigm to investi-gate the profound “mystery of meaning” precisely because of its criticism of a presumed “non–cognitive” (i.e. “autonomist”) linguistic semantics. However, within the cognitive framework, the disapproval of linguistic semantics often appears unfocused, being addressed to a variety of theo-ries and authors gathered under unspecified labels. Bringing into play the quandary of the “autonomy”, Violi’s question should be recalled to dis-cuss the meaning of “cognitive” when referred to semantics. Such a re-flection seems, in fact, essential as to elucidate why some theorists believe that cognitive semantics is not so “cognitive” as it claims, and why one may find even “more cognitive” those approaches which lay on a philo-sophical question about language, such as the one outlined by Eugenio Coseriu. With this aim, in the first section, comparing the Chomskyan paradigm with the cognitive theories of the second generation, I will briefly discuss what is meant by “cognitive”. In the second section, I will instead investigate Eugenio Coseriu’s monist conception of language and the ruthless criticism he moved to cognitive semantics, enlightening some of the theoretical standstills of a “non–autonomist” semantic approach

Traditionally, a distinction between the ‘cartographic’ (the map) and the ‘visual’ (the view) has been acknowledged. The boundary between the cartographic and the visual is challenged in our everyday experience when we use digital tools such as virtual globes, in-car satellite navigation systems, or switch from map-views to street-views on mapping tools. This convergence produces forms of hybrid ‘geovisuality’. However, we can also retrace an ‘archaeology of the geovisual’ by comparing past cartographic and visual cultures

Quaderni del Dottorato in Scienze documentarie, linguistiche e letterarie. 1.

    SImili agli atomi

Words are more than “building blocks” for constructing texts. Through words, the speaker’s worldviews and beliefs emerge; through words, speakers co-construct their identity in interaction with others and the world, making sense of the world around them. These words may be at the centre of the language-system, but they may also be at the margins, on the periphery of the system, woven into associative networks

Principi di una sematologia generale nella Sprachtheorie. Metodi, temi e nozioni

    No full text
The paper focuses on the principles of Karl Bühler’s general sematology through the main concepts presented in the Sprachtheorie (1934). According to the author, a unitary theory of language has its scientific foundation in sematology, meant as a general theory of the sign. In the articlesome important notions for semiotic reflection will be explored, such as sign, field, value and abstractive relevance, from which it is possible to deepen the themes of a Bühlerian sematology. They can be summarized in the significative and instrumental nature of language, and linguistic forms. The goal is to place the author’s work in the broad scenario of semiotic disciplines

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
