Continuous metadata flows for distributed multimedia
The practical use of temporal multimedia has increased markedly in recent years as enabling technologies for the distribution and streaming of media have become available. As a part of this trend, hypermedia systems and models have adapted accordingly to incorporate such distributed multimedia for presentation. Structured interpretation of information has long been a fundamental feature of both open hypermedia systems and knowledge systems. Metadata, in its many forms, has become the cornerstone for providing this structured knowledge above and beyond basic data and information. This thesis presents the rationale and requirements for continuous metadata, which supports the metadata accompanying distributed multimedia throughout the lifecycle of streamed media, from generation, through distribution, to presentation. Throughout this process it is the temporal and continuous nature of the metadata which is paramount. A conceptual framework for continuous metadata is proposed to encapsulate these principles and ideas. Continuous metadata and the associated framework enable the development, in particular, of real-time, collaborative, semantically enriched distributed multimedia applications. Experience building one such system using continuous metadata is evaluated within the framework. An ontology is developed for the system to enable the collation, distribution, and presentation of structure aiding navigation of multimedia, and it is shown how continuous metadata utilising the ontology can be distributed using multicas

The lead author wrote this code to analyze multi-year re-sighting data collected from moose (Alces alces) in Minnesota, elk (Cervus elaphus) in Washington, and mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) in Washington and Alaska, to evaluate whether detection probabilities increased or decreased as a function of time since animals were captured.Fieberg, John R; White, Kevin S. Social responsibility and Livestrong
Extract:Overview: The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is an organization that has been highly successful leveraging sport and social responsibility. The LAF was founded in 1997 by professional cyclist Lance Armstrong, during his treatment for testicular cancer that had spread to his abdomen, lungs, and brain. The LAF was started based upon the idea of improving the lives of individuals affected by cancer. In its early years, the organization consisted of a small group of employees and volunteers working to raise money in the fight against cancer (LIVESTRONG: Our history, n.d.). Since those formative years, a number of factors have impacted the growth of the organization. First, cancer has emerged as the world's leading cause of death. Second, Lance's stature has expanded exponentially. Third, the resources available to the organization have increased significantly. Accordingly, the organization now reaches every corner of the globe. As an example, in 2010, over 1,100 grassroots LIVESTRONG days - a day/event founded by the organization in 2004 to celebrate the movement against cancer — were held in over 65 countries (LIVESTRONG: Milestones, n.d.)
A systematic literature review of charity sport event sponsorship
Research question: Organisations choose to sponsor charity sport events (CSE) to achieve a variety of marketing objectives. Sponsoring CSEs is different than traditional sport event sponsorship programmes because CSEs combine sport with charity. The complexity of CSE sponsorship has attracted researchers from different disciplines, which has resulted in a wide-ranging body of literature. The purpose of the current systematic literature review is to synthesise the existing body of knowledge to identify future research opportunities. Research method: A systematic literature review of the existing CSE sponsorship literature was conducted. In total, 42 English peer-reviewed journal articles were analysed to summarise the geographic location, methodologies, theories, constructs, and managerial implications of the existing body of literature. Results and Findings: The results reveal that a high proportion of the existing research has examined CSE sponsorship programmes in the United States. The majority of the articles reviewed collected cross-sectional data through questionnaires to investigate the outcomes of CSE sponsorship. Based upon the managerial implications advanced within the existing body of CSE sponsorship literature, event participation segmentation can assist in creating meaningful leverage initiatives. Furthermore, event sponsors are encouraged to share their underlying motivation to support the CSE and invite employees to volunteer at the event. Implications: Future research should collect longitudinal data from event participants and use the scroll back method to examine CSE sponsorship programmes. Scholars should also adopt physiological measures as a complementary data source to self-reported data to create a more holistic understanding of CSE sponsorship. No Full Tex

Music for classical guitar by South African composers : a historical survey, notes on selected works and a general catalogue
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 296-309).This is the first comprehensive investigation of music for, or including, the classical guitar by South African composers. The focus of this research has been, firstly, to uncover as much of the repertoire as possible, and, secondly, to collate, study, catalogue and report on the information. A brief historical survey of the guitar in South Africa provides the context within which this study was conducted. The primary sources of quantitative data collection were through the archival catalogues of the South African Music Rights Organisation and through personal contact with guitarists, composers and guitar teachers. Other sources consulted were publishers, broadcasting corporations, recording companies, libraries and the internet. The body of the dissertation comprises biographical sketches, background notes, analyses and technical notes on 17 selected solo and chamber works dating from 1947 to 2007 by some of South Africa's most prominent composers and guitaristcomposers. The repertoire ranges in style from the traditional and ethnically inspired to the experimental and abstract. As this is an empirical survey, each selected entry includes details on instrumentation, duration, level of difficulty, number of pages, scordatura, commissions or requests, sources or publishers, premières and recordings. A biography of each composer is provided as well as background notes which offer an overview of the selected work. The notes discuss historical, cultural, musical and extra-musical influences, and frequently include references to interview material. The commentaries on the selected works, with musical examples, include an analytical component describing structure, form, stylistic and compositional elements, while the technical observations include performance suggestions and a grading for each work
Constraints and Facilitators of Sport Participation in Qatar: Perceptions of Ooredoo Marathon Participants
The Qatari government has increasingly supported education of Qatar residents on the importance of physical activity, along with developing and improving sport infrastructure, and bidding for and hosting a collection of sport events. Despite these efforts, a number of challenges inherent to Qatar may hinder participation among the country's residents. The current research examines constraints to physical activity described by participants in a sport event in Qatar, along with factors that facilitated their participation. Semistructured interviews were conducted with Qatari residents who had participated in the Ooredoo Marathon (N = 22), the largest participatory sport event in Doha, Qatar that targets individuals of all running abilities. Four constraints (social life, reluctance to walk, lack of time and competing priorities, and expectations for women) along with three facilitators (technology, peer and familial support, and government support) emerged from these interviews. The findings provide implications for sport and event managers to promote the social aspects of sport event participation in Qatar, as well as heightening awareness of sport focused technology. This publication was made possible by a grant from the Qatar National Research Fund under the National Priority Program award number NPRP9-172-5-021
Social Media Usage Among Elite Athletes: An exploration of athlete usage during major events
Social media platforms have proliferated the sport industry. Social media is constantly evolving, with platforms being adopted by many sport stakeholders including sport governing bodies, leagues, teams, sporting events, fans, coaches, managers, and athletes. For athletes, social media have provided new avenues to share personal and professional news, manage their personal image and brand, and develop deeper interactions with fans. However, since the rise of social media, sport stakeholders have debated the extent of athlete social media use at major sport events. The purpose of this research was threefold: (1) to investigate why athletes use social media, the gratifications they receive, and the challenges they experience during a major sport event, (2) explore the elements of social media athletes perceive to be distracting, the practices they undertake to address distractions, and the support they receive from sport organisations, and (3) to examine how national sport organisations manage athlete social media use and their perceptions of social media as a distraction.
To better understand athlete social media use during major sport events, three studies were conducted sequentially. Each study gathered qualitative data, allowing the researcher to delve deeper into the perceptions of athletes and sport administrators.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Dept Tourism, Sport & Hot MgmtGriffith Business SchoolFull Tex
