Deliberative Constitutionalism and Constitutional Pluralism in the European Union: Synthesis or Antithesis?
Significant normative frameworks such as deliberative constitutionalism and constitutionalism pluralism have called into question the legal features of constitutions in the context of a plurality of authority claims, as well as the issue of constitutional legitimacy in circumstances of democratic deficit. There is however a limited view linking legal and political theoretical investigation in these frameworks, taken individually. The present paper claims that there can be a fruitful comparison between deliberative constitutionalism and constitutional pluralism, both in antithetic and synthetic terms. This comparison will be carried out through the epistemic investigation of a meta-constitutional rationale in transnational constitutionalism. Eventually, the paper will propose a notion of communal constitutionalism gathering elements from both normative frameworks and introducing an innovative rationale, with an emphasis on the role of future generations

The foundations of the EU as a polity /
In this insightful book, Massimo Fichera provides an original account of European integration as a process - completed by the creation of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. The study builds upon a demonstration of how European constitutionalism has been informed by a meta-rationale, which is expressed by security and fundamental rights as discourses of power. The book uses this conceptual framework to analyse the development of the EU as a polity. Chapters cover significant recent crises, including the Eurozone, refugees, the rule of law, Brexit and constitutional identity. These events are not only recognized as being political shocks, but more meaningful and long-lasting occurrences which have had, and will continue to have, a deep impact on the development of the EU as a legal and political system. In light of this, the variety of crises that have recently affected the EU are discussed with thought given to their impact as an interlinking whole. Adeptly combining both theoretical and doctrinal analysis, this book will appeal to students and scholars of both EU law and politics, as well as those interested in legal and political theory more widely. Government officials, policymakers and practitioners will also find this a stimulating read
DETERMINING THE OPTIMAL CONFIGURATION OF A HEAT EXCHANGER WITH A TWO-PHASE REFRIGERANT THROUGH EXERGONOMIC APPROACH
An integrated approach to characterize the dynamic behaviour of a mechanical chain tensioner by functional tolerancing
Assembled systems composed of flexible components are widely used in mechanics to dampen vibrations and store or dissipate energy. Often, the flexible components of these systems are assembled via non-linear sliding contacts and yielding constraints. Geometric non-linearity along with non-linearity of stiffness, damping and contact pressure between flexible components greatly complicate the dynamic characterization of these assemblies. Therefore, such assemblies are characterised almost exclusively by means of experimental testing. This research analyses how classic ASME and ISO tolerance standards can be used to guarantee and control the conformity of these assembled systems with their functional requirements limiting the number of experimental tests. In particular the dependence of the dynamic behaviour upon functional tolerances is studied for a mechanical tensioner in a chain drive timing system of an internal combustion engine (ICE). The semi empirical methodology is based on displacement measurements and modal analyses. A multibody model with few degrees of freedom (MBM-FDoF) is proposed as the first approximation to reproduce the variability of the dynamic behaviour of the tensioner considering variations in functional tolerances
Optimal thermal power production by means of an equivalent electric circuit for a thermal network: The Savona Campus Smart Polygeneration Microgrid case
The paper proposes to model a thermal network by using a simple equivalent electrical circuit, in order to easily predict the thermal power generation once fixed the desired temperature. The validation has been performed on the Savona Campus Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM): identifying the value of the parameters involved in the model by minimizing the difference between the temperature profile as calculated with the circuit and the measured one in a set of training days; testing its efficiency on a set of testing days by showing a good agreement with the theoretical temperature profiles and the measured ones; obtaining a more efficient behavior of the thermal generation once fixed a desired thermal profile
This paper recalls the rich personal and intellectual relationship between Massimo Pavarini and Iñaki Rivera Beiras.
