Impulsiveness neurobiological substrate in borderline personality disorder
Tendency to answer to frustrations with "acting out" in Borderline personality disorder suggests a difficult symbolising process. Neurobiological studies evidence a malfunctioning of frontal, prefrontal and limbic areas probably neurobiological substrate of impulsiveness. After complete psychological screening and SCIDII interview, by a video emotional activation paradigm, standard-SPECT analysis recorded cerebral activity of 3 borderline personality disorder patients and of a control subject. In borderline patients, but not in control subject, limbic areas, frontal and prefrontal cortex activation was present perhaps to show a cognitive activity put in action in order to manage the strong emotion triggered by video
Job polarization in European industries
Job polarization instead of pure upgrading is emerging in European industries. This article focuses on polarization of the employment structure and contributes empirical evidence to explain patterns of occupational change in relation to four major groups: managers, clerks, craft workers and manual workers. Building on the structural approach, the author aims to analyse employment dynamics at the sectoral level and shed light on job polarization trends in Europe. Job polarization clearly emerges, mainly in service sectors, and in some European countries it is leading to a rejection of the hypothesis of skill upgrading sustained by the skill-biased technical change paradigm
B) Tommaso Landolfi is an author which defies any definition and labeling. The writer, with his complex narrative style, wanted to subvert – of which he was more than capable – the expectations and the reassuring automatisms of the reader, changing and replacing the colour, the form and the position of the playing cards he had in his hand when he entered the game of 20th century literature, betting everything on surprise effects. The grotesque, absurdity, nihilism, erotic obsession, even sadism and violence are laid upon the unsuspected and non-conventional level of the deepest and farthest removed interiority, drawing upon unpredictable linguistic and narrative strategies, using deceiving beginnings and endings, close in style to the bewildering experimentalism of the contemporary European avant-garde
Selective cardiac neuroadrenergic abnormalities in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy
Increased sympathetic drive to the heart might contribute to the development and progression of myocardial damage in hypertensive patients (HTs). This study assessed the possible presence of abnormalities in myocardial uptake of (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG), a marker of sympathetic activity, in HTs with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).
METHODS: Eleven HTs with LVH and 10 matched normotensive controls underwent clinical and laboratory examination, as well as LVH determination by echocardiography. The presence of myocardial ischemia was ruled out by exercise stress testing. Global and regional myocardial uptake of (123)I-MIBG was determined in both groups using planar and single proton emission tomography scintigraphy. In addition, thallium-201 (Tl-201) myocardial scintigraphy was performed in HTs. The heart/mediastinum (H/M) ratio on planar (123)I-MIBG images at different time points was compared between HTs and controls. Moreover, regional cardiac uptake of (123)I-MIBG was compared between groups and, within the HTs group, with regional Tl-201 uptake.
RESULTS: At all study times, the H/M ratio was lower in HTs than in controls (all p <0.05). A significant reduction in (123)I-MIBG uptake in the mid-inferolateral and mid-inferior segments was observed in HTs compared to controls. Also, a significant reduction in (123)I-MIBG uptake compared to Tl-210 uptake was observed in non-septal segments of HTs.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac abnormalities in global and regional uptake of (123)I-MIBG, as well as impaired (123)I-MIBG compared to Tl-201 uptake, are present in HTs with LVH. Given the effect of sympathetic nervous system on the heart, these abnormalities might play a role in hypertension-related cardiac damag
Computing the exact distributions of some functions of the ordered multinomial counts: maximum, minimum, range and sums of order statistics
Starting from seminal neglected work by Rappeport (1968), we revisit and expand on the exact algorithms to compute the distribution of the maximum, the minimum, the range, and the sum of the J largest order statistics of a multinomial random vector under the hypothesis of equiprobability. Our exact results can be useful in all those situations in which the multinomial distribution plays an important role, from goodness-of-fit tests to the study of Poisson processes, with applications spanning from biostatistics to finance. We describe the algorithms, motivate their use in statistical testing and illustrate two applications. We also provide the codes and ready-to-use tables of critical values
The Decline of Violent Conflicts: What Do The Data Really Say?
We propose a methodology to look at violence in particular, and other aspects ofquantitative historiography in general, in a way compatible with statistical inference, which needs to accommodate the fat-tailedness of the data and the unreliability of the reports of conflicts. We investigate the theses of “long peace” and drop in violence and find that these are statistically invalid and resulting from flawed and naive methodologies, incompatible with fat tails and non-robust to minor changes in data formatting and methodologies. There is no statistical basis to claim that “times are different” owing to the long inter-arrival times between conflicts; there is no basis to discuss any “trend”, and no scientific basis for narratives about change in risk. We describe naive empiricism under fat tails. We also establish that violence has a “true mean” that is underestimated in the track record. This is a historiographical adaptation of the results in Cirillo and Taleb (2016)

Punti di vista impossibili nel palinsesto virtuale della città | Impossible points of view in the virtual palimpsest of the city
The design of the urban palimpsest is a significant attraction to video games. This contribution investigates the new forms of virtual interaction between the user and the city thanks to digital models of the same which, climbing over, maneuverable and controllable, allow the user to observe the city from physically ‘impossible’ points of view. In this new form of ‘virtual living’, the user becomes the author and organizer of new city palimpsests where the unprecedented point of view is an opportunity to build imaginary palimpsests
Persistence Exponent in Superantiferromagnetic Quenching
We measure the persistence exponent in a phase separating two-dimensional spin system with non-conserved dynamics quenched in a region with four coexisting stripe phases. The system is an Ising model with nearest neighbor, next-to-the-nearest neighbor and plaquette interactions. Due the particular nature of the ground states, the order parameter is defined in terms of blocks of spins. Our estimate of the persistence exponent, ` = 0:42, differs from those of the two-dimensional Ising and four state Potts models. Our procedure allows the study of persistence properties also at finite temperature T : our results are compatible with the hypothesis that ` does not depend on T below the critical point.
