Ofbeldishegðun karla í nánum samböndum : áhrifavaldar ofbeldishegðunar karla, jafnrétti kynjanna og úrræði

    No full text
Heimildarritgerð þessi fjallar um ofbeldishegðun karla í nánum samböndum (e. violence in close relationships) og kynbundið ofbeldi (e. gender based violence). This paper discusses the violent behaviour of men in close relationships and gender-based violence. With increased gender equality, gender education has gained more attention among the public. Violence in close relationships and gender-based violence is a growing threat to women´s human rights worldwide. Violence can take on different manifestations, including physical, mental and sexual violence. This paper seeks to answer questions about whether increased participation of men in gender equality can reduce their violence behavior in close relationships, whether masculine ideas can affect the violent behaviour of men in close relationships and whether there are means for men who have committed violence and want to seek help to change their violence behavior. The author will examine the societal influence for violent behaviour in men and their methods to express their feelings. It is also examined whether men receive appropriate education on gender equality and whether gender equality laws can reduce the violence behavior of men in close relationships. The result of this paper are that men want to change their violence behavior and change dominant male stereotypes that describe the characteristics of men like aggression, strength and domination of women. There is also growing interest in men seeking assistance in their violence and thus taking responsibility for their behavior. The results of this paper also indicate that the treatment options for men who are violent need to be tailored to their needs as violence in close relationships is a sensitive issues. Key concepts: gender-based violence, violence in close relationships, stereotypes, gender equality, resources

An exploratory study of child obesity concerns among African-American children and parents:

    No full text
Childhood obesity is reaching epidemic levels in the United States with current prevalence rates at more than three times the “Healthy People 2000” goal. African Americans, other minorities, and low SES populations are disproportionately affected, and the adverse cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine health implications typically associated with adult obesity are now evident in children. Developing effective child obesity communication messages and interventions to reach African Americans is critical if the prevalence trends and health disparities are to be reversed. This exploratory study sought to add to the literature by examining the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of an indicated group of young overweight African American children and their parents, and by better describing their felt experience. Principles of community psychology informed the philosophy and implementation of the study, as resulting guidance for community-based interventions was sought. This area of psychology also offers a collaborative approach to entering and working with communities, such as African Americans, who have shown suspicion to traditional research and also in this instance may not be motivated for change. Eighteen subjects participated in separate parent and child focus groups, and the data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin’s (1998) grounded theory method. Nine key qualitative themes and directional implications from a parent survey are described in the results. Additionally, in order to understand clinical implications, two hybridized case studies representing prototypical client presentations were developed from the data and analyzed using Fishman’s (1999) pragmatic case study method. The cases represent a client who might be more responsive to intervention and one whose clinical presentation and situational characteristics suggest more barriers to treatment. A detailed case comparison further explicates attendant factors that are likely to affect communication messages, outreach, and treatment outcome with these types of clients. Study limitations are discussed, and the report concludes with implications for future community-based research and treatment, specifically with African Americans.Psy.DIncludes bibliographical references (p. 116-124)by Karla E. The text is an analytical presentation of the only collection of poetry by the author Karel Mauser, who as an exile after the Second World War, at first in Austrian Carinthia and later in the United States of America, mainly wrote stories and novels as well as short prose. In his last decade he also wrote intimate confessional poetry which has been selected, edited and prefaced by Dr Tine Debeljak in a collection entitled Zemlja sem in večnost (I am the Earth and Eternity). Mauser’s poetry is associated with the Slovene tradition of impressionism and models of Catholic expressionism.
