Physical and dynamical characterization of (5201) Ferraz-Mello, a possible extinct Jupiter family comet
No full textContext. The subject of asteroids in cometary orbits (ACOs) has been of growing interest lately. These objects have the orbital characteristics typical of comets, but are asteroidal in appearance, i.e., show no signs of a coma at any part of their orbits. At least a fraction of these objects are thought to be comets that have either exhausted all their volatile content or developed a refractory crust that prevents sublimation. In particular, the asteroid ( 5201) Ferraz-Mello has, since its discovery, been suspected to be an extinct Jupiter family comet due to the peculiar nature of its orbit. Aims. The aim of this work is to put constraints on the possible origin of ( 5201) Ferraz-Mello by means of spectroscopic characterization and a study of the dynamics of this asteroid. Methods. We used the SOAR Optical Imager (SOI) to obtain observations of ( 5201) Ferraz-Mello using four SDSS filters. These observations were compared to asteroids listed in the Sloan Moving objects catalog and also to photometry of cometary nuclei, Centaurs, and TNOs. The orbital evolution of ( 5201) Ferraz-Mello and of a sample of asteroids and comets that are close to that object in the a - e plane were simulated using a pure N-body code for 4 000 years forward and 4 000 years backward in time. Results. The reflectance spectrum obtained from its colors in the SDSS system is unusual, with a steep spectral gradient that is comparable to TNOs and Centaurs, but with an increase in the reflectance in the g band that is not common in those populations. A similar behavior is seen in cometary nuclei that were observed in the presence of a faint dust coma. The dynamical results confirm the very chaotic evolution found previously and its dynamical similarity to the chaotic evolution of some comets. The asteroid is situated in the very stochastic layer at the border of the 2/1 resonance, and it has a very short Lyapunov time ( 30 - 40) years. Together, the spectral characteristcs and the dynamical evolution suggest that ( 5201) Ferraz-Mello is a dormant or extinct comet
Análise das condições competitivas da indústria de papel de embalagens do estado de Santa Catarina

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Economia.Com o presente trabalho objetiva-se estudar as condições competitivas da indústria de papel de embalagem do estado de Santa Catarina e propor políticas públicas e estratégias empresariais, no intuito de contribuir para estudos que buscam caracterizar esta estrutura industrial catarinense. A indústria de papel de embalagem possui algumas características, entre elas o alto grau de concentração produtiva; presença de fortes barreiras de entrada; grau elevado de verticalização; a indústria é tecnologicamente madura; grande incidência de reparos incrementais nas máquinas e equipamentos (up grades), entre outras. Para se proceder a análise das condições competitivas desta indústria dentre os diversos modelos teóricos possíveis, optou-se pelo Estudo da Competitividade da Indústria Brasileira - ECIB, de Coutinho e Ferraz (1994) e Ferraz et alii (1997), por tratar-se do mais adequado para esta análise específica. Assim, a partir da construção de uma discussão teórica acerca do padrão de concorrência, da estrutura de mercado, dos modelos teóricos de análise da competitividade, buscou-se caracterizar, por meio de pesquisa em fontes secundárias e dados, a indústria de papel de embalagem em níveis mundial, brasileiro e catarinense, tomando-se por base os resultados da pesquisa de campo, pôde-se traçar as condições competitivas da indústria de papel de embalagem do estado de Santa Catarina, partindo-se para uma comparação da estrutura industrial catarinense em relação ao padrão mundial estabelecido nesta indústria. Finalmente, traçou-se políticas públicas e estratégias empresariais para esta indústria, baseando-se nos pontos positivos e negativos detectados neste segmento da indústria e conclui-se o trabalho

Bridging the 'gap‘ between migrants and the banking system: an innovative business model promoting financial integration, financial stability, and profitability
No full textThe thesis probes a specific area - the banking system and the business niche concerned with migrants' remittances - and considers the flows of these people and their money in today‘s global economy (over 3% of the world's population). It argues that the banking system has failed to understand the changing "paradigm" of the migrant market and thus has not updated its business plan or business model for this business segment in response. In failing to harness the liquidity of the migrant market, the author argues, the banking industry is missing out on a potentially profitable business segment that could create financial stability within the industry and the world's economies. Furthermore, by ignoring the "gap" that exists between the financial products on offer to the migrant sector and their needs in this respect in both the host and origin countries - providing a service at "both ends of the corridor" - the industry is also in danger of losing site of its commitment to social responsibility and the financial integration of migrants. At the heart of the argument for financial stability and financial integration is the proposition that there is a lack of communication among stakeholders, namely academic and financial institutions, governments, Diaspora associations and other decision makers
Thermodynamic Study of Three Phenanthroline Derivatives
No full textIn the context of an ongoing study on the thermodynamic characterization of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, this communication is concerned with the experimental thermophysical and thermochemical studies that have been recently developed on three phenanthroline derivatives – neocuproine, bathophenanthroline and bathocuproine (figure 1)[1,2]. These compounds exhibit properties that make them relevant ligands in coordination chemistry and potential candidates for their use as charge carrier transporting materials in organic semiconductor devices [3]
The thermal behaviour of the two compounds has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. In order to determine the respective standard molar enthalpies of sublimation, measurements were carried out using Knudsen effusion mass loss/mass spectrometry, a quartz crystal microbalance technique and high-temperature vacuum drop-microcalorimetry. Static bomb combustion calorimetry has been used to determine the standard molar enthalpy of formation in the crystalline phase. From these values, it has been possible to derive the standard molar enthalpy of formation of the given compounds for the gaseous and liquid phases.
The results obtained provide a deeper understanding of the phase transition behaviour for these compounds from condensed phases to the gaseous phase, shedding light on molecular decomposition and both intra and intermolecular forces inherent to the species. This knowledge contributes to the comprehensive characterization of the thermodynamic properties of these nitrogen heterocyclic compounds.

La Casa Ferraz de Valencia y su conjunto mural
No full textOur object of study is one of the former buildings of the ancient Plaza del Miguelete of Valencia: the Casa Ferraz. This discrete urban palace was a little over a century old when it was demolished due to city planning requirements for the enlargement of the current Plaza de la Reina.
From the Casa Ferraz, a small number of paintings have been conserved which formed part of its wall decoration, which we include in our study. An exhaustive search in archives and libraries was combined with the oral testimonies of those persons which had some type of involvement with the expropriation of the dwelling, conservation of the paintings, etc. to reach interesting conclusions with respect to the date of construction of the Casa Ferraz and, consequently, the dating of the paintings.Nuestro objeto de estudio es uno de los desaparecidos inmuebles de la antigua Plaza del Miguelete de Valencia: la Casa Ferraz. Este discreto palacio urbano contaba con poco más de un siglo de vida cuando fue derruido por exigencias urbanísticas para la ampliación de la actual Plaza de la Reina. De la Casa Ferraz se conservan un pequeño número de pinturas que formaban parte de su decoración mural, que incluimos en nuestro estudio.

Psicologia ambiental e agroecologia: apropriação do espaço por famílias de agricultores.
No full textTrabalhos anteriores (Bassani, Silveira e Ferraz, 2003; Bassani, Ferraz e Silveira, 2004)assinalaram contribuições da Psicologia Ambiental para a Agroecologia, através de metodologias participativas. Este trabalho é um estudo piloto sobre apropriação de espaço e apego ao lugar por famílias de agricultores do município de Araras (SP). O modelo dual de apropriação de espaço (Pol, 2002) envolve ação/transformação do espaço e identificação simbólica e, a partir deste processo, identificam-se características do apego ao lugar. Resultados indicam diferenças entre as famílias nos processos de ação/transformação. Do ponto de vista simbólico, não há diferenças entre as famílias: são mantidos símbolos de identidade da família e da região. Discute-se o papel de políticas públicas na apropriação de espaço dos agricultores e suas famílias
