Particle image velocimetry study of fractal-generated turbulence
An experimental investigation involving space-filling fractal square grids is presented. The flow is documented using particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a water tunnel as opposed to previous experiments which mostly used hot-wire anemometry in wind tunnels. The experimental facility has non-negligible incoming free-stream turbulence (with 2.8 % and 4.4 % in the streamwise () and spanwise () directions, respectively) which presents a challenge in terms of comparison with previous wind tunnel results. An attempt to characterize the effects of the incoming free stream turbulence on the grid-generated turbulent flow is made and an improved wake-interaction length scale is proposed which enables the comparison of the present results with previous ones for both fractal square and regular grids. This length scale also proves to be a good estimator of the turbulence intensity peak location. Furthermore, a new turbulence intensity normalization capable of collapsing for various grids in various facilities is proposed. Comparison with previous experiments indicates good agreement in turbulence intensities, Taylor microscale, as well as various other quantities, if the improved wake-interaction length scale is used. Global and local isotropy of fractal-generated turbulence is assessed using the velocity gradients of the two-component (2C) two-dimensional (2D) PIV and compared with regular grid results. Finally, the PIV data appear to confirm the new dissipation behaviour previously observed in hot-wire measurements

Product Innovation Knowledge Transfer for Developing Countries: Towards a systematic Transfer Approach
The transfer of knowledge on product innovation to small- and medium-sized enterprises and local knowledge institutions in developing countries is expected to be one of the key drivers for competiveness and economical growth, and a part of the solution to environmental and social challenge. In that respect, this PhD study focuses on how the process of the current knowledge transfer takes place and how it can be improved. A combination of literature review and empirical research has resulted into a conceptual framework to describe the complex and dynamic process of product innovation knowledge transfer to developing countries. In order to improve this process, a systematic approach has been developed and operationalized by a needs assessment tool and a design manual: The UNEP Design for Sustainability for Developing Economies (D4S-DE) Manual (www.d4s-de.org). Both tools have been tested in practice by practitioners and have been evaluated by an academic review board.Design EngineeringIndustrial Design Engineerin

Where do we draw lines: professional relationship boundaries and the child and youth care practitioner
The question of professional relationship boundaries is a poignant one, in light of the many boundary grey-zones that are created by the variety of young people’s needs, practice settings and professional relationship contexts within the field of child and youth care. In order to support practitioners’ development of critical thought and awareness of professional boundaries, this paper applies a professional relationship boundaries conceptual framework to child and youth care work, and the literature is consulted to explore the impacts of boundary violations, influences on individual’s boundaries, cues to indicate blurring boundaries, and key strategies to maintain balanced boundaries

J.C. Painter letter to Benjamin Lundy
Letter from J.E. Painter to (presumably) Benjamin Lundy, answering a request for information about the history and operations of the Underground Railroad. Letter includes details of a story of an ex-slave transported on the Underground Railroad through Ohio and stories of the plight of other fugitive slaves crossing the Ohio River.
Benjamin Lundy (1789-1839) was a prominent Quaker abolitionist best known for his development of abolitionist periodicals. His "Genius of Universal Emancipation" was first published in 1821 from his home in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and enjoyed a wide circulation across the antebellum United States. In the 1820s, the young William Lloyd Garrison came to work for The Genius. Benjamin Lundy traveled widely seeking subscriptions to The Genius, giving talks about the anti-slavery movement, and observing and documenting the conditions of enslaved people across the Americas. He was also involved in the establishment of freed slave colonies in Mexico

Turbulent wakes of plates with non-equilibrium similarity scalings
We have conducted hot wire anemometry measurements of six different axisymmetric turbulent wakes which demonstrate the existence in all these wakes of non-equilibrium mean flow profile scalings and of the underlying self-preservation and non-equilibrium dissipation scalings. These mean flow profile scalings are different from those of all documented canonical boundary-free turbulent shear flows to date, all of which have been established for very far downstream regions
Effectiveness Study Of The Universal Newborn Hearing Screening [estudo Da Efetividade De Um Programa De Triagem Auditiva Neonatal Universal]
This article discusses the insufficiency of family participation in a program of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening. As it is a premature detection of hearing alterations, with the possibility of reduction of damages caused by these, it becomes essential the family participation during all the diagnosis process. The aim of the text is to understand the absence of the mothers of infants born between May 2002 and June 2004 at Center of Integral Attention to the Health of the Woman (Unicamp) when returning to a second hearing evaluation. Through the characterization of social-demographic profiles of the mothers, some aspects were related to the non-returning at the screener service and three mothers were selected to interview. It was concluded that three traces from the mother's profiles are detached among mothers who returned less times: to have more than one child; to have frequency of only one to three prenatal consultations; and not having a partner. The basic allegation for the non-returning was that the loss of hearing could be identified through observation at home. Besides being constituted by social factors, the absences of the mothers reflect cultural practices. It was considered necessary the creation of a net of health services that guide the mothers of infants about alterations in the infantile development.152353361Santiago, M.R., Bassetto, M.C.A., Triagem Auditiva em berçários (1995) Fonoaudiologia E Berçário: Um Convite À Atuação, pp. 61-64. , Bassetto MCA, Brock R, Wainsztejn R, São Bernardo do Campo: Centro de Estudos NeomaterOliveira, T.M.T., Casarin, M.T., Souza, M.A., Marquett, S.C.E., Barros, T.N., Atitudes dos Médicos Pediatras em relação à Audição Infantil (1998) Pediatria Atual, 11 (9), pp. 48-53Pagnossin, D.F., Oliveira, T.M.T., Comparação das informações que pais de diferentes classes sociais têm sobre audição (1998) Pró-Fono Rev.
