Jaime Fernandes Simões and the art brut narrative constructions in Portugal
Get PDFUIDB/00417/2020 UIDP/00417/2020Este artigo narra a história de Jaime Fernandes a partir de imaginários que se formam em torno da noção de art brut, conformando-lhe qualidades específicas enquanto sujeito louco e artista. Neste sentido, trabalha-se com os discursos produzidos pela crítica de arte portuguesa, em especial entre os anos de 1970 e 1980 do século XX, em encontro com as teorias psiquiátricas que fundamentam noções e qualificativos para as expressões dos sujeitos asilados. O caso de Jaime Fernandes é peculiar no sentido em que dá origem a estas discussões em Portugal, sendo ele considerado o primeiro grande artista descoberto nos termos da art brutno país. Propõe-se, sobretudo, conhecer o sujeito Jaime Fernandes a partir do cruzamento destes discursos e proposições conceituais, colaborando numa perspetiva mais ampla para o debate de noções como art brut e outsider art. This article describesthe history of Jaime Fernandes from the imaginary formed around the notion of art brut, which conformedto him specific qualities as a mad subject and an artist. In this sense, the article analysesthe discourses produced by art criticism in Portugal, especially between the 1970s and 1980s, according topsychiatric theories that underlie notions and qualifications for the expressions of the asylum subjects. The case of Jaime Fernandes is peculiar in the senseit gives rise to these discussions in Portugal,since he wasconsidered the first great artist discovered under art brut in the country. No full textNos dias 10 e 11 de Maio de 2018 decorreu na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, em Lisboa, o Simpósio Internacional Jaime Cortesão: escritos e geografias do exílio. Este Simpósio propôs-se reunir os mais recentes resultados da investigação que vem sendo realizada em torno da obra do autor de Alexandre de Gusmão e o Tratado de Madrid e da História do Brasil nos velhos mapas. Pretendeu-se também aprofundar o conhecimento sobre os sucessivos contextos de exílio que Jaime Cortesão enfrentou na Europa e no Brasil durante mais de 30 anos, com destaque para aqueles que decorreram na Espanha republicana e no Rio de Janeiro das décadas de 1940 e 1950. Esta iniciativa foi ainda pensada como uma oportunidade para reflectir sobre o importante legado de Cortesão enquanto editor e tradutor, assim como para analisar o estado actual dos projectos de edição da sua obra, tanto em Portugal como no Brasil.On the 10th and 11th of May 2018, the International Symposium Jaime Cortesão: writings and geographies of exile took place at the National Library of Portugal, in Lisbon. This Symposium set out to bring together the most recent results of the investigation that has been carried out around the work of the author of Alexandre de Gusmão and the Treaty of Madrid and the History of Brazil in old maps. It was also intended to deepen knowledge about the successive contexts of exile that Jaime Cortesão faced in Europe and Brazil for more than 30 years, with emphasis on those that took place in Republican Spain and in Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s and 1950s. The initiative was also conceived as an opportunity to reflect on Cortesão's important legacy as an editor and translator, as well as to analyze the current status of publishing projects for his work, both in Portugal and in Brazil.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

"'Jaime' (1973) de António Reis"
Get PDFPhotography and the cinematographer have dominated in the twentieth century two essential aspects of the artistic apparatuses referring to two orders of enunciation (in the Foucauldian sense, also two orders of discourse): the showing and the telling. The work we have chosen to illustrate this is the Portuguese medium length film (approx. 30') Jaime. António Reis (1927-1991) filmed Jaime, in 1973, inspired on the life and work of Jaime Fernandes (1900-1969), who was hospitalized for 31 years at the Hospital Miguel Bombarda with the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. In the last four years, he painted and drew a singular work in accordance to Dubuffet's canon: "the laws which govern his art are equivalent to those of children or primitive peoples." No full textIn this article, I propose an analysis of Jaime (1974), based on the concept of prosopopoeia – a way of attributing life to a dead person while simultaneously speaking through its voice. Directed by António Reis with the assistance of Margarida Cordeiro, the film revolves around Jaime Fernandes, his life, drawings and writings. Based on some of Jaime’s sequences, I conceive of the film as two-folded: on the one hand, it conjures Fernandes’s figure by resorting to his creations and biographical elements, making the dead alive and visible; on the other hand, Jaime does more than merely retrieving Fernandes’s memory. The material traces of his life are appropriated in a way so that the film channels Reis and Cordeiro’s topics of interest, developed in their later works, namely: the importance of marginal or non-normative modes of existence; the filmmaker’s questioning about forms of preserving and representing reality; their conception of cinema as a living archive, as well as a means of expression and reasoning; their conception of the world in terms of recurrences and returns, allowing the possibility of living and surviving through others.Neste artigo, proponho uma análise do filme Jaime (1974) a partir do conceito de prosopopeia, aqui lido como forma de atribuir vida a um morto e de falar através da sua voz. O ausente é Jaime Fernandes, cujos desenhos e escritos estão no centro desta obra, realizada por António Reis com assistência de Margarida Cordeiro. A partir da análise de algumas sequências, descrevo o filme como um movimento duplo: por um lado, a figura de Fernandes é conjurada através da mobilização de objectos e lugares associados à sua biografia, tornando o morto vivo e visível; por outro lado, o filme vai além da recuperação da memória daquele homem, e as evidências materiais da sua existência antes servem de veículo para vários dos interesses e temáticas que Reis e Cordeiro desenvolvem noutros filmes.
