    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Desenvolvimento de sistema microfluídico à base de silicone silpuran® para seleção de espermatozoides bovinos

    Sperm selection consists of a fundamental stage in reproductive techniques such as PIVE. However, the methods usually used can cause damage to cell integrity. Microfluidic devices were developed in order to select sperm without the use of centrifugation and with time reduction. However, although these are made with materials considered low cost, they are still relatively expensive. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of a new microfluidic device made from Silpuran® silicone and to perform the selection of episdidymis sperm by testing chemotaxis by different substances. For this purpose, 10 epididymis testicle complexes were used for each part of the experiment and the kinetic parameters of sperm with the use of the computerized analysis system (CASA), morphology, integrity and viability of the plasma membrane. In experiment 1, to evaluate silicone toxicity, the slow thermoresistance test was used, in which the control and treatment samples were kept in incubator at 37.5ºC and evaluated at different times (0, 60, 120 and 180 min). The data were compared using the Mann-Whitey test. The parameters of MT, MP, VSL, VCL and VAP of the epididymis sperm deposited in the device were higher than those of the control. The use of Silpuran® silicone in the manufacture of microfluidic devices was not toxic to cells and presented satisfactory results in relation to the control. For experiment 2, referring to the saline selection, the microfluidic device, formed by a central reservoir and 4 more reservoirs around interconnected by canalics, was prepared with saline solution 0.9%, middle MIV, middle + matured oocytes and middle MIV + medroxiprogesterone acetate at 0.05% in peripheral reservoirs and a sample rate in the central reservoir. After filling, the device was incubated for 30 min. As a control technique, the Percoll® gradient was used. The data were compared using the Kruskall-Wallis test. The epididymis sperm collected from reservoirs containing SS, middle MIV and middle MIV + O were similar to that found by Percoll® technique. For the parameters of MT and MP, the MIV and MIV + O showed a higher percentage of morphologically normal sperm in relation to Percoll®. The microfluidic device was efficient in the selection of epididymis sperm, which were more attracted to the SS, MIV and MIV + O mediaA seleção espermática consiste em etapa fundamental em técnicas reprodutivas como a PIVE. Entretanto, os métodos usualmente utilizados podem causar danos à integridade da célula. Dispositivos microfluídicos foram desenvolvidos com a finalidade de selecionar os espermatozoides sem a utilização de centrifugação e com redução do tempo. Porém, embora estes sejam confeccionados com materiais considerados de baixo custo, ainda são relativamente caro. Objetivou-se avaliar a toxicidade de um novo dispositivo microfluídico confeccionado a partir do silicone Silpuran® e realizar a seleção de espermatozoides epididimários testando-se a quimiotaxia por diferentes substâncias. Para tanto, foram utilizados 10 Complexos testículos epidídimos para cada parte do experimento e avaliou-se os parâmetros de cinética dos espermatozoides com a utilização do sistema de análise computadorizada (CASA), morfologia, integridade e a viabilidade da membrana plasmática. No experimento 1, para avaliar a toxicidade do silicone, foi utilizado o teste de termoresistência lento, em que as amostras do controle e tratamento foram mantidas em incubadora a 37,5ºC e avaliadas em diferentes tempos (0, 60, 120 e 180 min). Os dados foram comparados utilizando o teste de Mann-Whitey. Os parâmetros de MT, MP, VSL, VCL e VAP dos espermatozoides epididimários depositados no dispositivo foram superiores aos do controle. O uso do silicone Silpuran® na confecção dos dispositivos microfluídicos não foi tóxico para as células e apresentou resultados satisfatórios em relação ao controle. Para o experimento 2, referente ao de seleção espermática, o dispositivo microfluídico, formado por um reservatório central e mais 4 reservatórios ao redor interligados por canalículos, foi preparado com solução salina 0,9%, meio MIV, meio MIV + oócitos maturados e meio MIV + acetato de medroxiprogesterona à 0,05% nos reservatórios periféricos e uma alíquota da amostra no reservatório central. Após preenchido, o dispositivo foi incubado por 30 min. Como técnica controle foi utilizado o gradiente de Percoll®. Os dados foram comparados utilizando o teste de Kruskall-Wallis. Os espermatozoides epididimários coletados dos reservatórios contendo SS, meio MIV e meio MIV + O foram semelhantes ao encontrado pela técnica de Percoll®. Para os parâmetros de MT e MP, os meios MIV e MIV + O apresentaram maior porcentagem de espermatozoides morfologicamente normais em relação ao Percoll®. O dispositivo microfluídico foi eficiente na seleção de espermatozoides epididimários, os quais foram mais atraídos para os meios SS, MIV e meio MIV + OCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPE

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
