Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

This Master thesis submitted to University of Coimbra studies political communication in Portugal and in Brazil. It intends to investigate the journalism coverage regarding the main political actors in the press, especially the Heads of Government José Sócrates, Prime Minister of Portugal and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil. The first part of the dissertation consists of a deeper theory about concepts of political communication and political image through the media. It also brings reflections on the press in today's society and the production of news. The second part of the work contextualizes the press and politics in these countries during a given time period and presents the case study. The empirical study focuses on the analysis of two magazines of reference in Portugal and Brazil: Visão Magazine and Veja Magazine, respectively, during the time period from September 2008 to March 2009. Reports containing significant actions of the Heads of Government published in this period were analyzed based on existing methodologies of studies for this area, such as Ferin (2007) and Serrano (2006). From a range of variables of form and content, it was possible to obtain statistical data and to write interpretative results. Thus, this research combines the quantitative (statistical procedures) and qualitative elements (content analysis of the titles and texts) and to identify the similarities and differences between the journalistic coverage in Portugal and Brazil. The work aims also to contribute to comparative studies, between Portugal and Brazil in the area of political media

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

This dissertation aims at analysing the discourses and representations of Interculturality and Cultural Diversity in the context of Portuguese higher education. The path of this research involves the following phases: (i) make out the official concepts of these terms and (ii) interview Portuguese students and foreign students from Portuguese-speaking countries attending Portuguese university education. The choice of students from different countries, but sharing a common space (Portuguese higher education), made it possible to obtain an audience either with different or similar experiences and cultural references. The first phase outlined a mapping of the official discourse on the theme of Cultural Diversity and Interculturality with the focus on conducting a brief description of UNESCO’s documentation on culture. The second phase, starting from the definition of these concepts, seeks to understand how they are experienced in real life. To do so, we propose an analysis on the discourse of the interviewees in order to understand, based on their reports, how they perceive cultural interactions. The study also seeks to understand whether these students consider having an “interculturality” experience in their relations with people of different cultures. We intend to analyse, from cultural interactions that students reported having had, at the student level and in everyday social relations, how they understand the theme of cultural diversity. To that end, with semi-structured scripts, we used the techniques of Individual In-depth Interviews and Focus Groups. This phase was held in public and private universities in Lisbon, Coimbra, and Braga, took into account that these regions have significant university weight and a significant number of students from exchange programmes or protocols between Portuguese-speaking countries. At the analysis stage, we sought to determine which were the concepts of interviewees on the interactions between groups of different nationalities and analyse their discourses on Cultural Diversity and Interculturality. We conducted a Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006; 2012; 2013) of the data collected in the interviews. For the composition of the theoretical framework and the understanding of the thematic categories identified on the interviewees’ discourses, we founded our research on theories of social representations (Moscovici, 1961), acculturation (Berry 1997b; 1997a; Berry et al., 2012), social identity (Tajfel, 1974; 1982), self-categorization (Turner, 1987) ), without disregarding the latest developments of these theories in the context of intergroup relations (e.g. Chryssochoou, 2004; Hogg & Vaughan, 2010), as well as, studies on social stereotypes (e.g. Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002). It was found that, to talk about interculturality, the interviewees often resorted to a certain pattern of discourse construction based on "I", "we" and "the others" while cultural relations, were not given due prominence, relegated to the background. We also found that, beyond the image of "self" and of "the other", the questions about the country of origin of the interviewees were valued. The conclusion reached was that the notion of culture is dissimilar for the different target groups interviewed. The results reveal the difficulty for interviewees in understanding and establishing a cultural exchange or sharing. Considering the official concepts that define the terminologies "cultural diversity" and "interculturality" and thinking of the interviewees’ discourses about intergroup relations, in practice, there seems to be no "inter"-culture, nor interculturality. We observed that the constructions of self-images and hetero-images reflected positions in relation to the other(s) and that they would be at the heart of the cause of the disagreements over the other(s) and consequently about what is perceived about the culture of the other. We set out to build a model that would indicate how the process of perception of (oral) discourse about the themes involving intercultural relations unfolded, taking into account the inter-group relations, which we denominated as "Model of Intercultural Relations". Analysing the students’ discourses, it was found that meeting people of different cultures does not necessarily generate interaction and does not assume from the outset that there is an intercultural process of either party. We considered that the images - the self-image and the hetero-image - are a central starting point for building a discourse on the other. We verified that, in the same way, they are decisive for the construction of perceptions about cultural diversity and interculturality

This article is the result of a research conducted in the final months of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 in Lisbon’s Metropolitan Area. The aim of this exposition is to report the “impressions” of four visits to poor residential quarters, mostly inhabited by citizens from Portuguese (Official) Speaking African Countries (PALOP) and their descendents. These impressions, as well as the conversations paralleled to the sessions, were registered on a field diary. The objective is to describe aspects of daily life, namely those that are associated to fear and violence, revealed throughout the meetings. These aspects tend not to be considered on researches that are grounded on methodologies with logic-deductive characteristics, but according to the author, this erasure discloses immigration “ambience” and the representation of the accepting country and their citizens. Key words: reception studies, PALOP immigrants, Lisbon metropolitan area.

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The use of new mobile technologies has become a global phenomenon. There is "a global mobile youth culture" and an "emergency of the sociability in a network" (Castells et al., 2009, p. 183-184). We are witnessing the "passage of the slow paradigm to the hustle paradigm" (Pais, 2010, p. 131) a paradigm where traditional communication, spoken and face to face has been being overtaken by distance communication. "To be modern has come to mean being unable to stop and even less able to stand" (Bauman, 2001, p. 40). This study main goal is to understand the mobile phone use by the millennials, and inherent gratifications and social effects generated by the use of such equipment, bearing in mind that “the biggest problem with most predictions about technology is that they are invariably made based on how the world works today rather than on how it will work tomorrow” (Morozov, 2011, p. 247). The research carried out through a mixed methodology that met the quantitative and qualitative research included the analysis of 649 questionnaires applied to young adults and 46 posts obtained from the Facebook webpages of the main telecommunications operators in Portugal. Thus, we tried to contribute to an increased knowledge on the use of new technologies and mirror the experience of millennials, from the awareness of a new communication paradigm. Technology transformed communication, uses and attitudes. Communication as also became fluid. Their axes are mobility and fluidity and mobile phones support this modernity, operating as the nervous system of liquid communication. The flow effect among other results revealed by structural equation model, may serve as a warning to the users themselves, parents, businesses and for schools, which act as educational mediators of language through new technologies because "we may need to learn to use them more responsibly" (Baron, 2008, p. 231). It is for us to manage the risk, to the extent that "society today is confronted by itself through its relationship with risks" (Beck, 1992, p. 183)

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
