Interface and results visualization of WMN-GA simulation system: evaluation for exponential and Weibull distributions considering different transmission rates
This is a copy of the author 's final draft version of an article published in the journal Computer standards & interfaces.
The final publication is available at Springer via
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.csi.2015.04.003In this paper, we present the interface and data visualization of a simulation system for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), which is based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs). We call this system WMN-GA. As evaluation parameters, we consider Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), throughput and delay metrics. For simulations, we used ns-3 simulator and Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP). From simulation results, we found that PDR for Weibull distribution is higher than Exponential distribution. But, the throughput of Exponential distribution is higher than Weibull distribution. The delay of Exponential distribution is smaller than Weibull distribution.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Ficção científica e o Admirável mundo novo: previsões concretizadas no atual século e considerações bioéticas Science fiction and the Brave New World: predictions fulfilled in our century and bioethical considerations
The speed with which science generates results in modern society requires reflection on the limits of scientific progress. This is the foundation of Brave New World, a book published by Aldous Huxley in 1932 that portrays a future technological society along the lines of Fordism. This article establishes a relationship between our current technocratic society and that described by Huxley, discussing the viability of the technical and biological aspects of the manipulations narrated in the book in light of current knowledge. Some bioethical considerations with respect to the procedures 'invented' by the author - and which are already or could be developed in modern society - will also be addressed
SCIENCE METRICS SYSTEMS AND ACADEMIC PROMOTION: BOSNIAN REALITY
Societal importance and the quality of scientific research highly depend on the usefulness of the results of research for the societal and scientific community. The wish to allocate the funds to high-quality research and to establish right criteria for scientific evaluation and academic career progression, make scientific criteria increasingly important to measure the quality of research and knowledge valorization. However, it is very difficult to apply the right criteria which can objectively assess scientific research. For many years, there has been a great interest in scientific ranking and evaluation of scientific journals, but also of scientific contribution of scientists. It is generally accepted that the IF (WoS) and the total number of citations of articles published in the journal, are the most relevant parameters of the journal’s significance. However, the significance of a scientist and the value of their scientific production are much more complicated to evaluate and they cannot be directly reflected by the importance of the journals in which their articles are published. In this article, the authors describe and evaluate the most known scientific databases which are used in science. The majority of existing science metric systems, which evaluate the achievement of scientists are focused solely on the number of citations of their articles. For example, H-index, which is calculated as the lowest ranked article which number of citations matches its ranking number, has considerable shortcoming because it does not take into account the individual contribution of each author and allows expanding author lists with authors whose contribution may be insignificant or none. Therefore, the authors propose Z-score, as a new science metric system, which takes into account the author’s contribution to the scientific article and greatly remedy major discrepancies in evaluating scientific production of individual authors and institutions
Effect of Rolling Induced Anisotropy on Fatigue Crack Initiation and Short Crack Propagation in Al 2024-T351
abstract: A full understanding of material behavior is important for the prediction of residual useful life of aerospace structures via computational modeling. In particular, the influence of rolling-induced anisotropy on fatigue properties has not been studied extensively and it is likely to have a meaningful effect. In this work, fatigue behavior of a wrought Al alloy (2024-T351) is studied using notched uniaxial samples with load axes along either the longitudinal or transverse direction, and center notched biaxial samples (cruciforms) with a uniaxial stress state of equivalent amplitude about the bore. Local composition and crystallography were quantified before testing using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and Electron Backscattering Diffraction. Interrupted fatigue testing at stresses close to yielding was performed on the samples to nucleate and propagate short cracks and nucleation sites were located and characterized using standard optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Results show that crack nucleation occurred due to fractured particles for longitudinal dogbone/cruciform samples; while transverse samples nucleated cracks by debonded and fractured particles. Change in crack nucleation mechanism is attributed to dimensional change of particles with respect to the material axes caused by global anisotropy. Crack nucleation from debonding reduced life till matrix fracture because debonded particles are sharper and generate matrix cracks sooner than their fractured counterparts. Longitudinal samples experienced multisite crack initiation because of reduced cross sectional areas of particles parallel to the loading direction. Conversely the favorable orientation of particles in transverse samples reduced instances of particle fracture eliminating multisite cracking and leading to increased fatigue life. Cyclic tests of cruciform samples showed that crack growth favors longitudinal and transverse directions with few instances of crack growth 45 degrees (diagonal) to the rolling direction. The diagonal crack growth is attributed to stronger influences of local anisotropy on crack nucleation. It was observed that majority of the time crack nucleation is governed by the mixed influences of global and local anisotropies. Measurements of crystal directions parallel to the load on main crack paths revealed directions clustered near the {110} planes and high index directions. This trend is attributed to environmental effects as a result of cyclic testing in air.Dissertation/ThesisM.S. Mechanical Engineering 201
Large-scale micron-order 3D surface correlative chemical imaging of ancient Roman concrete

There has been significant progress in recent years aimed at the development of new analytical techniques for investigating structure-function relationships in hierarchically ordered materials. Inspired by these technological advances and the potential for applying these approaches to the study of construction materials from antiquity, we present a new set of high throughput characterization tools for investigating ancient Roman concrete, which like many ancient construction materials, exhibits compositional heterogeneity and structural complexity across multiple length scales. The detailed characterization of ancient Roman concrete at each of these scales is important for understanding its mechanics, resilience, degradation pathways, and for making informed decisions regarding its preservation. In this multi-scale characterization investigation of ancient Roman concrete samples collected from the ancient city of Privernum (Priverno, Italy), cm-scale maps with micron-scale features were collected using multi-detector energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and confocal Raman microscopy on both polished cross-sections and topographically complex fracture surfaces to extract both bulk and surface information. Raman spectroscopy was used for chemical profiling and phase characterization, and data collected using EDS was used to construct ternary diagrams to supplement our understanding of the different phases. We also present a methodology for correlating data collected using different techniques on the same sample at different orientations, which shows remarkable potential in using complementary characterization approaches in the study of heterogeneous materials with complex surface topographies
Negro drama: narrativas estudantis negras, educação física escolar e educação étnico-racial
Research on ethnic-racial relations and black culture in the field of school physical education has grown in recent years, though still scarce. The present text seeks to amplify these reflections and contribute to the construction of new possibilities of learning and perception of the world from the aesthetic-corporeal black knowledge (GOMES, 2017). Taking up the historical path that guided the pedagogical practices of physical education, it is understood that it was directly linked to the discrimination of the black body and its culture. (MATTOS, 2007). In this sense, combating racism in school also runs through the body where historical practices of inequalities and symbolic violence that lead to countless negative demarcations with black and black students fall. In this way, how can School Physical Education be transformed and re-signified to contribute to the promotion of racial equality? The research was anchored in a narrative perspective (BENJAMIN, 1994) and - inspired by the biographical studio of projects (DELORY-MOMBERGER, 2006) - autobiographical narratives (SUÁREZ, 2007) were produced in the biennium 2018-2019, in Belo Horizonte, by a group of 5 black students who - from his escrevivências (EVARISTO, 2017) on School Physical Education - composed, together with autobiographical educational narratives of the author, a book on the education of ethnic-racial relations in school physical education, bringing indications (GINZBURG, 1989) of possible reflections for re-signification of teaching practices for an antiracist education.
