This paper will examine two contemporary picturebooks which have in their origin one of the most powerful of all fairy tales, recorded by J. and W. Grimm, in 1812, Hansel and Gretel: Hansel and Gretel (1981), by Anthony Browne, and Hansel and Gretel (2008), by Kveta Pacovska. This essay aims at proceeding to a comparative analysis of house/home element, as a literary space, a physical and symbolic space, verbal and visual represented. The dialogue that binds these two discourses, both by the same author and clearly affiliated with postmodern aesthetics, as well as the relevance of intertextuality in these “existential” picturebooks, among other topics, will be underlined.

    No full text
This thesis is a compilation of performances from seasons of three different works; Histoire du soldat by Igor Stravinsky, Hansel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck and La Finta Giardiniera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Each work is presented twice with different camera views. The first is 'reverse angle' (or near reverse) which gives the viewer an impression of the conductor as seen by the performers. The second is 'house view', the stage as seen from the audience: in places the conductor is also visible. Additionally, these two perspectives give the viewer different audio impressions, that of both the performer and the audience. In each case, there is a marked difference in balance of singers, speakers and instrumental ensemble. Tape one is of Histoire du soldat by Igor Stravinsky, performed at the Frederick Wood Theatre at the University of British Colombia. The performing ensemble was a collaboration between the author, acting as Musical Director and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) student Sabine Sengmueller (Stage Director), with members of cast and instrumental ensemble other students. The reverse angle view is of performances on November 15 and 17, as indicated in the table of contents. The house view is taken from the performance on November 20. Tapes two and three are of Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel. These were performed at the Sagebrush Theatre in Kamloops, with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and UBC Opera Ensemble performing on December 13. Again, tape two is reverse angle and tape three, house view. For this performance, the author is acting as Assistant Conductor to Mr Bruce Dunn, Music Director of the Kamloops Symphony. The final tapes, number 4 and 5, are of a collaborative project by the University of British Colombia School of Music Symphony Orchestra and Opera Ensemble. Professor Jesse Read, head of the School or Music, was the conductor for this season. The author acted as Assistant Conductor, performing on April 2, 1998. The work performed, La Finta Giardiniera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is important to note that the reverse angle (tape 4) was compromised by the presence of the stage set, and a lack of technical equipment at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, where the performances occurred. The angle shown is from the choir stalls, opposite prompt side.Arts, Faculty ofMusic, School of[Includes 5 videocassettes]Graduat

This research utilizes the fairy tales as the object of this study. The fairy tales used in this study are Hansel and Gretel and Tom Thumb. The purpose of this research is to find out how the poverty discourse is presented in the stories. This research is an interesting to analyze because the two fairy tales have the same plot and discuss the same topic about poverty. Poverty that is emerged in Hansel and Gretel mentions that there is a family who lives in poverty condition. The parents cannot feed the children because they have a little food to survive. Moreover, the great dearth that befalls on the land makes them difficult to procure food. To prevent the problem above, the parents have to abandon the children to the forest in order to stabilize the economic need in their life. Furthermore, poverty that is presented in Tom Thumb mentions that there is a family who wants to have a child. After they wish to have a child, there is something miracle that happens to them. They have a little child who is called Thomas Thumb. He has a little body like small thumb. The parents give him a plenty of food in order to grow well. However, his body is the same size. To comply the economic need in his family, Thomas Thumb has to deceive the people around him in order to fulfill the economic need in the middle of forest. In order to analyze poverty as the subject-matter from those fairy tales, this research uses the theory of representation that is written by Stuart Hall and connects to Foucault‘s discourse. Moreover, this research is categorized as a qualitative research. There are two kinds of data in this research. First, primary data are taken by narrative description, dialogue, utterance in the fairy tales. The secondary data are gained from several books, journal, article to support primary xi source. As the result of this discussion, this research concludes that poverty presented in Hansel and Gretel is caused by the lack food and a great dearth that befalls on the land. Additionally, poverty emerged in the fairy tale is also caused by the financial problem. In this case, poverty that happens in the fairy tales causes the parents have to do the criminal action to the children in order to survive in the forest. Furthermore, poverty presented in Tom Thumb also infers that the little child who has to deceive the people in order to fulfill the economic need in his family. The last conclusion, the author legitimazes the criminal action which is done by parents to the children because the parents do not have other choices to stabilize the economic need in their family

The Formation of the Witch Figure in Fairy Tales: The Case of Hansel and Gretel

Abstract The term “witch” in Western folklore has historically referred to women who were the targets of oppression, as seen with the witch hunts and witch trials. On the other hand, witches in contemporary Japan are imagined as fiction, the product of a combination of various works and cultures. This Japanese image of witches is very different from the original idea of the witch as represented in fairy tales. Witches in Japan were brought in from abroad and are thought to have undergone a Japanese shift in the course of translation. Within this context, when was the image of the Japanese witch formed? From this perspective, in this paper, the author examines Japanese translations of Grimms’ Fairy Tales. First, 27 of the 210 Grimms’ Fairy Tales that had witches (or similar characters) were selected, followed by a review of 32 examples of translations of Hansel and Gretel, which is a representative work. The period of study spanned the Meiji period to the Showa pre-war period. For the scope of this study, the word “witch” (majyo 魔女) was first used in a general translation of the Grimms’ Fairy Tales in 1916 (see Table 1) and of Hansel and Gretel in 1924. Although similar translations such as “sorcerer” (mahotsukai 魔法使い), “hag” (youba 妖婆), and “termagant” (onibaba 鬼婆) were also used transitionally, the standardized translation inclined towards the word “witch” during the Taisho period. Previous research suggests that it was also during the Taisho period that the word “witch” came to be used for real women. Based on the findings of this research, the basis for such figurative expressions can be found in the fairy tales translated during this period. The character of the mysterious, elderly woman is thought to correspond to the image of the witch in fairy tales.departmental bulletin pape

Darbs sastāv no četrām nodaļām.
