    Las nociones de autor y de lector suponen una reducción instrumental del lenguaje, que serviría como medio entre ambos agentes, pero Oscar del Barco, junto a una corriente de pensamiento que critica dicha instrumentalidad en la modernidad, desarticula esas nociones y postula un carácter intransitivo y absoluto de la escritura.     Oscar Wilde : a Victorian sage in a modern age

    This paper assesses Oscar Wilde’s reaction to the fin de siècle and argues against his widely-accepted position as a main figure in the English avant-garde movement, a view which major literary critics such as Peter Gay, Sos Eltis and S. I. Salamensky promote today. Based on Foucault’s definition of modernity as ‘a break with tradition' rather than a specific time, I argue that Wilde was not the modernist author he is widely perceived as, but a conventional Victorian sage who cleverly adopted, and tailored, the fashion of his time to deliver his thoroughly traditional teachings. The paper is split into five sections. The first of deals with Wilde’s creation of his dandy self and the influences of Carlyle, Arnold and Christ over him; the second section examines Ruskin’s influence over Wilde’s theory of art, and Wilde’s self-perception; the third section continues to examine the influence of the Victorian sages on Wilde by exploring his criticism of contemporary modernity in some of his works; the fourth and fifth sections deal with Wilde’s views on the roles of the sexes and his homosexuality respectively, and weigh these views, through further close analysis of his works, against the argument of his modernity. The research ends by asserting that Oscar Wilde was thoroughly Victorian in his views and themes, and that he perceived himself as a sage for his modern age.peer-reviewe

Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos da TraduçãoEste estudo analisa duas traduções do conto de fadas The Happy Prince (1888), de Oscar Wilde, com base nos pressupostos teóricos da análise da tradução, de Antoine Berman. Entre as traduções feitas para o leitor brasileiro, optou-se por analisar o processo tradutório realizado por Bárbara Heliodora (1992), e outro por Luciana Salgado (2004). O critério adotado para a seleção das respectivas traduções leva em conta o fato de a primeira ser elaborada por uma tradutora e crítica de literatura nacionalmente reconhecida, e de a segunda ser a tradução mais recente no Brasil. Buscam-se analisar os textos traduzidos quanto aos traços estilísticos do autor, às características do gênero literário do conto e às possíveis deformações que os textos traduzidos de maneira etnocêntrica podem apresentar. Para isso, divide-se o trabalho em três capítulos: o primeiro apresenta uma breve biografia de Oscar Wilde e um panorama da literatura inglesa no século XIX; o segundo capítulo aborda as características do conto como gênero literário, as características da literatura do fim do século XIX e os traços estilísticos do autor; no terceiro capítulo analisam-se os trabalhos das tradutoras mencionadas, com base nos critérios acima citados. Em seguida, tecem-se as considerações finais. Por fim, nos anexos, encontram-se transcritos os textos do conto original e as duas traduções. This research analyzes two translations about the tale The Happy Prince (1888) written by Oscar Wilde, based on the theoretical postulation of the translation investigation made by Antoine Berman. Among some translations of this tale to Brazilian reader, it was chosen to be analysed the translation process made by Bárbara Heliodora (1992), and another one made by Luciana Salgado (2004). The criterion chosen to select these translation works considers the fact that the first oneis done by a well-known translator and theater critic in Brazil, and the second translation is the most recent one done in Brazil. The study of them is focused on the stylistic peculiarities of the author, the characteristics of the tale as a literarian sort, and the disfigurations that usually occur in translated texts done by as the ethnocentric manner. In order to do the research, the work is divided into three chapters: the first one presents a brief biography of Oscar Wilde, the English literature on XIX century; the second chapter broaches the characteristics of the tale as a literarian sort, the characteristics of the literature in the end of XIX century and Wilde#s stylistic peculiarities; and in the third chapter the translation works made by the above mentioned translators are analysed based on the criterions referred. After that, the final considerations are made about the study. In the appendage, there is the original English text written, as well as the translated ones

    Piecewise-linear approximation of nonlinear dynamical systems

    The piecewise-linear (PWL) approximation technique developed by Julia ́n et al. in the past few years is applied to find approximate models of dynamical systems dependent on given numbers of state variables and parameters. Referring to some significant examples, i.e., topological normal forms, it is shown that a PWL dynamical system approximating a given smooth system can preserve its main features. In particular, if the approximation accuracy increases, the equivalence between approximating and approximated systems shifts from qualitative to quantitative. The validity of the proposed approach is eventually tested by use of a severe nonlinear example, i.e., the Rosenzweig-MacArthur system, which describes the population dynamics in a tritrophic food chain model

Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos da TraduçãoEsta dissertação consiste em uma discussão sobre a tradução teatral de textos de humor seguida da tradução comentada e anotada de The Importance of Being Earnest, de Oscar Wilde. No primeiro capítulo, são discutidas questões a respeito da tradução teatral, partindo-se do conceito de concretizações textuais de Patrice Pavis, como as noções de speakability e performance. No segundo capítulo, é feito um estudo sobre duas outras traduções da peça para o português brasileiro, analisando-se as escolhas feitas pelos tradutores bem como a evolução da tradução dessa peça ao longo da segunda metade do século vinte. O trabalho culmina com a discussão de questões pertinentes a minha tradução da peça, onde são tecidos os comentários pertinentes às escolhas ou mudanças realizadas na tradução apresentada: as questões dos nomes próprios, dos pronomes de tratamento e do humor. A nova tradução, que apresenta uma cena inédita ao público de língua portuguesa, e suas notas, encontra-se no apêndice deste trabalho. This dissertation consists of a discussion on theatrical translation of humoristic texts followed by a noted and commented translation of Oscar Wilde#s The Importance of Being Earnest. In the first chapter, questions related to theatrical translation are discussed starting from Patrice Pavis#s concepts of textual concretizations, such as the notions of speakability and performance. In the second chapter, there are analyses of two other translations of the play into Brazilian Portuguese focusing upon the translator#s choices as well as the evolution of the play#s translation through the second half of the twentieth century. This dissertation ends with a discussion on questions related to my translation of the play. In this final chapter, we can find commentaries concerning the choices and changes made in the translation presented, such as the question of the names of the characters, the personal pronouns, addresses and humour. The retranslation, which presents a new scene to Brazilian audiences, and the notes are in the appendix of this dissertation

    Por uma análise do discurso literário: funcionamento da autoria em Oscar Wilde e construção de imagem de autor

    Guided by the theoretical assumptions of Discourse Analysis proposed by Dominique Maingueneau (2006), this research focuses over two issues: firstly, the functioning of the authorship, and the second one, the construction of author s image. Those issues are take in account in a imbricate manner. We seek to analyze, by the approach of the manuscript De Profundis of Oscar Wilde, how works the functioning of the authorship considering the instances of person, writer and inscritor as postulated by Maingueneau. That done, we try to show that the preface-writers and critics, both English and French ones, who have studied the Wildes work, mobilized these instances of authorship in intensity and different ways to construct images to Oscar Wilde. Concerning to the constitution of the corpus analysis, we chose texts (prefaces, introductions, critics) produced in English and French contexts, because of the proximity and relationship the author had with the literary fields of these two countries. The analyzes showed that, in the different processes of construct images of author to Oscar Wilde, the instance of the person is recurrently mobilized, sometimes to make exceptions to the author\'s biography, sometimes weaving praise of him, and sometimes to effectively separate her to the other two instances (writer, inscritor) considering them as defining of their creative identity. Addressing these key issues and discussing others related to them - this research seeks to sustain fundamentally two theses, namely: i) that the image of the author is intimately linked to the emphasis or predominance that managers of an author\'s work gives to one or other (s) instance (s) of the authorship (person, writer, inscritor), ii) that the author is author of his texts, but he is not the only manager of his work. Beyond that, however, which is presented in the epistemological horizon of this research is the reaffirmation of the relevance and productivity of analysis of literary discourse.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorDoutor em Estudos LinguísticosÀ luz de pressupostos teóricos da Análise do Discurso Literário proposta por Dominique Maingueneau (2006), esta pesquisa debruça-se sobre duas questões: a primeira delas, o funcionamento da autoria; a segunda, a construção de imagem de autor. Essas duas questões são consideradas, ao longo do trabalho, de maneira imbricada. Buscaremos analisar, por meio da abordagem do manuscrito De Profundis de Oscar Wilde, o modo como se dá o funcionamento da autoria, considerando as instâncias da pessoa, do escritor e do inscritor postuladas por Maingueneau (2006). Feito isso, buscaremos demonstrar que os prefaciadores e os críticos ingleses e franceses, que se debruçaram sobre a obra de Wilde, mobilizaram essas instâncias da autoria em intensidade e formas diferentes, para construir imagens de autor para Oscar Wilde. Em relação à constituição do corpus de análise, optamos por textos (prefácios, apresentações, críticas) produzidos nos contextos inglês e francês, pela proximidade e relação que o autor mantinha com os campos literários desses dois países. As análises demonstraram que, nos diferentes processos de construção de imagem(ns) de autor para Oscar Wilde, a instância da pessoa é recorrentemente mobilizada, ora para fazer ressalvas à biografia do autor, ora para tecer elogios a ele, ora para efetivamente separá-la das duas outras instâncias (o escritor, o inscritor) definidoras de sua identidade criadora. Abordando essas questões principais e discutindo outras a elas relacionadas , este trabalho busca sustentar, fundamentalmente, duas teses, a saber: i) que a imagem de autor está intimamente ligada à ênfase ou predominância que os gestores da obra de um autor dão a uma ou outra(s) instância(s) da autoria (pessoa, escritor, inscritor); ii) que o autor é autor de seus textos, mas não é o único gestor de sua obra. Para além disso, entretanto, o que se apresenta no horizonte epistemológico desta pesquisa é a reafirmação da pertinência e da produtividade de uma análise do discurso literário

    Competition for FDI and profit shifting: On the effects of subsidies and tax breaks

    We investigate competition for FDI within a region when a foreign multinational firm can profitably exploit differences in statutory corporate tax rates by shifting taxable profits to lower-tax jurisdictions. In such framework we show that targeted tax competition may lead to higher welfare for the region as a whole than lump-sum subsidies when the difference in statutory corporate tax rates and/or their average is high enough. Tax competition is also preferable from an efficiency point of view (overall surplus) by changing the firm's investment decision when profit shifting motivations induce the firm to locate in the (before tax) least profitable country
