Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

[[abstract]] 台灣傳統彩繪受到中國大陸閩粵一帶的漢人移民,生活、文化、建築和空間環境上其受到影響。「彩繪」一詞包含著兩種意義,「彩」指的是在木構件上油漆作畫,以保護木構件來延長使用壽命。「繪」則指純美術書畫創作,以早期中國封建制度建構影響下而發展出禮教和階級制度,使建築空間內的繪畫有所區隔與劃分,也逐漸因為美術工藝技術的進步以及人們對色彩的認識,使台灣傳統彩繪成為傳統建築裝飾很重要的角色。 林劍峰畫師為西元1980年代,年輕一代的傳統彩繪畫師,主要其作品分布在地點集中於彰化、南投、雲林、嘉義、台南等縣市等。作品多為傳統民宅及寺廟為主,因台灣傳統建築彩繪的技藝傳承,已瀕臨到失傳或者斷層,因彩繪材料和繪畫施作標準工序缺乏明確文獻記載,大部分都是口耳相傳或是遵守古法,鑒於現有資料多為田野調查或畫師作品介紹及分析為主,因此想藉由自己在林劍峰畫師的教導下,在傳統建築彩繪施工、彩繪修復及實務經驗上,能清楚記錄台灣傳統彩繪各構件的施工方法及調查研究,也藉由本研究針對林劍峰畫師的工法紀錄及作品調查,及繪畫風格,建立樣本資料庫中,對瀕臨快失傳的傳統彩繪工法,得以清晰呈現。[[abstract]] The traditional architecture paintings in Taiwan have been affected by Fujian and Guangdong residents in coastal areas in China immigrated to Taiwan, including our culture, architecture and living environment. The vocabulary “painting” contains two meanings, for Chinese culture, one meant the wooden building protection and the other meant the painting on the building.Under the influence of the construction of the early feudalism in China, the development of ethics and hierarchy made the painting inside the building space different and divided. Due to the advancement of art and craft technology and people's understanding of color, traditional painting has played a significant role in traditional architectural decoration in Taiwan. Jian Feng-Lin is famous traditional master artisan from 1980 in Taiwan. Moreover, his works were mainly located south Taiwan, such as in Changhua, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan area. Lin's works were mostly traditional houses, ancestral shrines, and temples. Because of the art craft of Taiwan's traditional architectural paintings, the skill was forgotten from the trend of the time. Taiwan traditional painted materials and standard procedures were not properly recorded. Most of them were passed on by the speaker of the master artisan. In view of modern information, the study tried to record and to survey the real works from practical cases. Hopefully, the study will be clearly recording the construction methods and investigations of the traditional paintings in Taiwan, under the guidance of Jian Feng-Lin, in the traditional architectural painting construction, painting restoration, and practical experience, including his work record and work survey, and painting style. The database establishment by this study clearly presented the craft of the traditional architecture paintings in Taiwan, which was at risk of being lost to future generations
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Supervised Learning in Neural Networks without Feedback Networks
In this paper, we study the supervised learning in neural networks. Unlike the common practice of back-propagating error feedback by a separate feedback network that must have the same topology and synapse strengths as the feed-forward network, we propose a new adaptation algorithm by which the same supervised learning as accomplished by the back-propagation algorithm can be achieved without using a separate feedback network. The elimination of the feedback network makes it more likely for biological neural systems to achieve the same adaptation by means of some retrograde regulatory mechanisms that may exist in biological neural systems. Another advantage of this new algorithm is that it simplifies (hardware) implementation of artificial neural networks. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
