What we desire is african: intertextuality of negritude in Clarke's and Trindade's poetry
Carbon and Hydrogen Isotope Fractionation of Benzene, Toluene, and o -Xylene during Chemical Oxidation by Persulfate
Experiments were performed to investigate the carbon and hydrogen isotope fractionation of benzene, toluene, and o -xylene (BTX) during
chemical oxidation by unactivated persulfate at two concentrations (8 and 20 g/L). Carbon enrichment ( e
C
) values of −1.7 ± 0.1‰ for benzene,
−0.64 ± 0.1‰ for toluene and −0.36 ± 0.04‰ for o -xylene were obtained. No significant hydrogen enrichment ( e
H
) was observed for benzene,
while the hydrogen enrichment for toluene and o -xylene were −20 ± 3‰ and −23 ± 2‰, respectively. The dual isotope plot ( ∆ δ
13
C vs. ∆ δ
2
H) for
benzene and o -xylene revealed a distinct fractionation trend compared to the majority of the biodegradation data compiled from the literature;
however, no unique trend was observed for toluene. The significant carbon and/or hydrogen enrichment, and the distinct trend observed on the
dual isotope plot suggest that compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) can potentially be used to monitor the chemical oxidation of BTX by
persulfate, and to distinguish treatment areas where persulfate or biodegradation reactions are occurring for benzene and o -xylene

Abstract: In the early 19th century, the Grammatica philosophica da Lingua Portugueza written by Jerónimo Soares Barbosa was published posthumously, in 1822. It had throughout this century seven editions (1822, 1830, 1862, 1866, 1871, 1875, 1881). Francisco Solano Constâncio, the author of the Grammatica analytica da lingua portugueza, is one of these examples. Throughout his grammar, he often refers to this work of Soares Barbosa, and in its fifth part, dedicated to the study of orthography, he presents a set of critical considerations about the Soares Barboza’s orthographic doctrine. In this paper, it is our purpose to analyze these Observações criticas sobre as regras dadas pelo Snr Jeronymo Soares Barboza (Critical remarks about the [grammar] rules published by Jeronymo Soares Barbosa), in order to present Francisco Solano Constâncio’s views on some orthographic proposals postulated by the author Jeronymo Soares Barbosa. Keywords: Grammatica Philosophica da Lingua Portugueza; Jerónimo Soares Barbosa; Grammatica Analytica da Lingua Portugueza; Francisco Solano Constâncio; Orthography

Monolithic integration of silicon and polymer microstructures for Organ-on-Chip applications
Drug development is a complex, time-consuming (10 - 15 years) and expensive process. For a new medicine to reach the market, the net expenses covered by the pharmaceutical industry have been estimated to be around $2.6 billion. Nevertheless, the risk of finding adverse effects or toxicity cases once the drug is already on the market is still high. Thus, pharmaceutical companies have been keenly looking forward to means to eliminate this at an early stage of the development process. Recently, Organs-on-Chips (OOCs) emerged as a potential alternative to traditional drug screening. These devices, promise, in the middle-term, to enhance the in vitro screening and, in the long term, to reduce and eventually eliminate animal models in safety and efficacy essays. Nevertheless, the fabrication methods for most of these devices are hardly adaptable to scalable fabrication processes for in vitro screening application, as they rely strongly on manual techniques. This thesis demonstrates the successful development of diverse microstructures for Organ-on-Chip applications by using scalable IC and MEMS-based fabrication techniques. Chapter 3 demonstrates the development of microfabricated porous PDMS membranes for barrier modelling. A simple and reproducible method to fabricate and transfer porous PDMS membranes with a high control on pore size, porosity, thickness, is shown. Very thin (thickness <10 ¹m) porous membranes with small features sizes down to 2 ¹mand porosity up to 65% can thus be fabricated and successfully transferred with high reproducibility. The presented results on cell transmigration, topology and barrier formation demonstrated the biocompatibility of the porous PDMS membranes. Chapter 4 shows further efforts towards the realization of manufacturable OOCs. A monolithically microfabricated OOC device, an alternative to the available devices capable to address many more applications, was demonstrated. Preliminary biological experiments indicate its biocompatibility as cells (HUVEC, Cardyomyocites) are successfully cultured and maintained viable in the microchannels and the silicon cavity. Finally, Chapter 5 demonstrates other possibilities allowed by the use of IC and MEMS techniques. The integration of microstructures that enable transduction mechanisms to monitor the cell microenvironment, is shown. Specifically, strain gauges for stress sensing as an alternative to monitor in situ strain in microfabricated OOCs, are presented. Relative resistance changes of approximately 0.008% and 1.2% for titanium and polymeric strain gauges have been observed, respectively. The technological advances shown in this thesis form a significant contribution towards manufacturable fabrication of Organs-on-Chips and the standardization of OOCs as routinely used tools for drug development.Electronic Components, Technology and Material

Abstract : In the book ?O Segredo da Pirâmide: para uma teoria marxista do jornalismo" [?The Secret of the Pyramid: for a Marxist theory of journalism"], Adelmo Genro Filho stated that journalism is a form of knowledge that is crystallized in the singular. This statement has mobilized journalists, researchers and professors over the last 27 years for the institution and legitimacy of theories of journalism in Brazil. With the theoretical and philosophical framework of Critical Ontology of Marx and Lukács, this study exposes the mediations present in the production and reception of the theory and the philosophical concepts that ground the Genro Filho's statement. The work is divided into two interdependent parts. At first, the text brings the main issues that were necessary to the Brazilian journalism in the 1980s (with emphasis on the academic, journalistic writing and the hierarchy of professionals), the author's biography and how the book was received by professors and researchers on journalism in Brazil. The second part reconstitutes the philosophical bases of the book, recovering the ontological understanding of the author towards journalism and how those fundamentals optimize the understanding of journalism as a form of knowledge proposed by the author. The objective was to demonstrate how the author's theoretical choices have close connection with his biography and how he understood the issues of his time. Simultaneously, through the analysis about the book's reception, it was possible to establish a cartography of the Brazilian production based on 411 texts mentioning "The Secret of the Pyramid", evidencing that the process of institutionalization for the defense of journalism as a profession, specialized graduation and with specific theories coincides with that map. Paradoxically, it is demonstrated that the book's reception process is accompanied by a denial of peculiar Marxist basis underlying it, which motivates the detailed study of the categories used by Genro Filho
