The world-renowned economist, whose previous book titled, “The Banker to the Poor” has been followed by many social enthusiasts, cooperative advocates, and entrepreneurs. In its current off-the-press release, Prof Muhammad Yunus wrote “A World of Three Zeros”, The New Economics of Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment and Zero Net Carbon Emissions. They are important must-reads for development workers and leaders, needless to say, contextualizing the cases for ASEAN entrepreneur with a deeper sense of look into the Grameen bank system and other initiatives which are truly oriental but could significantly play an important global role in helping people help themselves. Muhammad Yunus hails from Bangladesh. He is the founder of the Grameen Bank System and the father of microcredit, an economic system or peoples movement that has been helping in uplifting the lives of poor families all over the world via micro financing schemes. Yunus and the Grameen Bank are winners of the 2006 Nobel Peace prize. He also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold medal in 2013

Tectonic geomorphology of the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben, Eastern Canada: implications for regional uplift and intraplate seismicity

    No full text
In intraplate areas where regional tectonic strain is accommodated by reactivation of pre-existing structures, the level of seismic hazard associated with faults in may be underestimated due to the poor surface expression of faults, scattered earthquake distribution, and long earthquake recurrence intervals. The cause of seismicity in eastern Canada remains unresolved. This is partially because surface expression of faults have been eroded during glacial and deglacial periods and in many cases are undetectable until a seismic event. Morphotectonic analysis has been widely applied to assess relative tectonic activity in various geological settings. To establish whether active uplift is occurring and to investigate the spatial distribution of uplift rates, 131 bedrock drainage basins in the Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben (OBG) were analysed. The aim of this was to: 1) test the applicability of geomorphic indices for quantifying active deformation, 2) quantify the spatiotemporal distribution of relative uplift rates, and 3) explore the implications for faulting mechanisms, deformation styles, and ultimately regional seismic hazard. We measured valley floor width-to-height ratio (Vf), basin elongation ratio (Re), basin hypsometric integral (HI), and normalized channel steepness index (ksn). The results demonstrate that high relative uplift rates occur in all six bedrock escarpment sections studied and suggests that are possibly associated with regional broad wavelength uplift (epeirogeny) resulting from a likely complex interaction between far field tectonic stress and glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Our analysis showed that Vf, Re, and ksn reveals no considerable spatial differences in high relative uplift rates, consistent with the Canadian base network GPS uplift rates. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Inhibition of colon carcinogenesis by stilbenoids and mechanisms of action:

    No full text
Stilbenes are a class of compounds present in small fruits such as grapes and berries and are known to present diverse pharmacological properties which include cholesterol lowering, serum glucose regulation, controlling lifespan and anti-cancer activity. Resveratrol is one of the extensively studied stilbene. Pterostilbene (trans-3, 5-dimethoxy-4’-hydroxystilbene), a structural analog of resveratrol, is present in heartwood of the tree, Pterocarpus marsupium as well as in many small fruits such as blueberries. In an attempt to study the effects of pterostilbene on colon carcinogenesis, we identified that pterostilbene inhibited expression of certain inflammatory genes in the colon and suppressed aberrant crypt foci formation in an azoxymethane (AOM)-induced model of colon carcinogenesis in rats. We also investigated the mechanism of anti-inflammatory action of pterostilbene using cultured HT-29 colon cancer cells. Our studies identified that the p38-ATF2 pathway was significantly inhibited by pterostilbene. More importantly, by silencing the expression of p38α isoform, there was significant reduction in iNOS and COX-2 induction. Interestingly, pterostilbene and the structurally similar compound, resveratrol, targeted different inflammatory pathways in HT-29 colon cells. Pterostilbene given at 40 ppm of the diet of AOM-injected rats lowered the tumor multiplicity of non-invasive adenocarcinomas compared to the control diet. Pterostilbene lowered the β-catenin levels in HT-29 cells which can have implications in the action of the compound against cell proliferation. An evaluation of different structural analogs of pterostilbene revealed some compounds to have greater action than pterostilbene against colon cancer cells. Methoxylation, ester and amino modifications at the 4' position in the B ring conferred greater potency for the molecule against cell proliferation and inflammation in vitro. Amino substitutions and methoxy modifications with trans configuration reduced tumor burden significantly in the HT-29 xenograft tumor model in SCID mice. These compounds were present at higher levels in the serum of the animals compared to the levels of other compounds. In conclusion, stilbenoid class of compounds has promising effects against proliferation and inflammation in both in vivo and in vitro models of colon carcinogenesis.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 130-152)by Shiby Pau

Dal Convivio alla Monarchia: quale Livio per Dante?

    No full text
This essay focuses on Dante’s references to Livy in Convivio IV.v, 11 as well as on some particularly important references to the Roman historian in the second book of the De Monarchia. The author argues that the first reference is most likely derived from the epitome compiled by Livy’s abbreviator Florus, and shows how it is placed at the beginning of a passage that refers to several different historiographical sources, including Agustine. The author therefore suggests that this reference to Livy in the Convivio is not based on Dante’s direct knowledge of the work of the Roman historian, but rather on the information contained in the synthesis by Florus. She also challenges the scholarly consensus on this topic by showing that some references to Livy in the De Monarchia – especially the “programmatic” one in II.iii, 6 – do not appear in the indirect tradition and can only be traced back directly to Livy. This suggests that Dante likely accessed the work of Livy before the composition of his political treatise

Coseismic Coulomb stress changes on intraplate faults in the western Quebec seismic zone following three major earthquakes in the past century

    No full text
There is currently no active fault map for the intraplate western Quebec seismic zone (WQSZ) in eastern Canada, and consequently, no detailed finite-fault source models which are critical for seismic hazard assessments in this region with a rapidly growing population. While previous numerical stress modelling studies have shown that mostly NNW-SSE to NW-SE-striking faults exhibit the highest potential for reactivation under the present-day tectonic stress field, such modelling is unable to take into account the interaction of faults and earthquakes. This study attempts to identify possible future rupture zones using Coulomb stress analysis. We explore the static stress transfer caused by the 1935 MW 6.1 Témiscaming, 1944 MW 5.8 Cornwall-Massena, and the 2013 MW 4.7 Ladysmith earthquakes, which are proximal to faults in the WQSZ that exhibit a relatively high reactivation potential, to determine if they have an increased potential for failure. The significance of Coulomb stress changes (ΔCFS) observed on the nearby ‘receiver’ faults varied widely. Among the events analyzed in this study, only the 1935 MW 6.1 Témiscaming earthquake caused extensively positive ΔCFS (≥ 0.1 Bar) on its receiver fault. The areal extent of the receiver fault that has been promoted to failure suggests that earthquakes with a comparable magnitude to the 1935 event can be triggered. This work is the first attempt to provide a physical basis for seismic hazard assessment input parameters in the WQSZ based on the results of numerical stress modelling. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Hermann Broch. Le riflessioni sul tradurre e il rapporto con James Joyce

    No full text
The aim of this contribution is, first and foremost, to give an account of Hermann Broch's reflections on translation, expressed in his 1946 theoretical essay entitled Einige Bemerkungen zur Philosophie und Technik des Übersetzens (Some Remarks on the Philosophy and Technique of Translation). Fundamental here is the relationship between author and translator, as it took shape in the intense work on the English translation, but also on the French translation, of his work Der Tod des Vergil (The Death of Virgil). A constant reference to James Joyce's Ulysses, with which Broch dealt extensively in his correspondence, is interwoven with the considerations set out in this essay
