Collaboration in/through Ethnographic Film. A Conversation
In this conversation Steven Feld (University of New Mexico, USA) and Antonello Ricci (“Sapienza” Università di Roma) discuss the four hour-long films that comprise the Jazz Cosmopolitanism in Accra series. Feld present's his ideas of “dialogic editing” and “dialogic auditing” as refinements of the playback and feedback methods he learned in the 1970s as a student of Jean Rouch. Feld and Ricci discuss and analyze the audio-visual methods and theoryy informing the Jazz Cosmopolitanism in Accra series. Their conversation reveals how a practice of collaborative cine-ethnography was developed over ten years in these four stylistically diverse films about contemporary musical life in Accra, Ghana

Spectral Signage: A Discussion with Steven Feld
This discussion with Steven Feld occurred online on May 4, 2020 for around two-and-a-half hours. It covers a wide range of topics: Feld’s training and background; the relations of linguistic anthropology, semiotics, linguistics, film studies, visual anthropology, musicology, and acoustemology; linguistic poetics, iconic power, and visual form; spectralism and the trace; relationality and interspeciality; the Anthropocene, the atomic bomb, and COVID-19; among other topics. This conversation builds upon Feld’s keynote lecture, “Spectral Signage” for the workshop Sense and Semiosis: Bridging Conversations between Linguistic and Visual Anthropology (September 26–28, 2019, at the University of Chicago, organized by Constantine V. Nakassis and Meghanne Barker, funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation), as well as the discussion that followed. A recording of the online conversation was transcribed by Emily Kuret and Constantine V. Nakassis, and edited by Meghanne Barker, Constantine V. Nakassis, and Steven Feld for readability, completeness, and context. References were later added as endnotes, and visual images and sound recordings discussed during the conversation were intercalated into the final text

Questioning acoustemology: an interview with Steven Feld
In this conversation transcript, Tom Rice asks Steve Feld a series of questions
about ‘acoustemology’, a term Steve coined and which has become a key concept
in sound studies. Referring to ‘acoustic epistemology’, a ‘knowing-with and
knowing-through the audible’, acoustemology emerged in the context of Steve’s
work on the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea and their intricate knowledge of the
sounds of their rainforest environment (Feld 2015, 12). It has since been applied
by Steve, and many others, in studies of sound in a wide variety of settings. Tom
asks questions that have arisen as he tries to explore and clarify the implications
of the term. For instance, are acoustemologies invariably culturally embedded, or
can they also be understood to emerge independently of culture? To what extent
are acoustemologies shaped by individual and personal preferences, experiences
and abilities? Is it possible for one acoustemology to end and another begin or do
acoustemologies merely shift in terms of the sounds to which they are orientated?
Answering with illustrations from his own intellectual journey, Steve presents
acoustemology as an open-ended concept which is generative rather than
prescriptive and which invites ongoing empirical research and interdisciplinary
