A psycholinguistic study of the bouba-kiki phenomenon: Exploring associations between sounds and shapes

This study investigates the cognitive phenomenon known as the bouba-kiki effect among English Language Teaching (ELT) students at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University in Turkey. The research aims to contribute to understanding how individuals intuitively associate specific sounds with abstract shapes, shedding light on the underlying cognitive processes of language perception. Participants (N=164) were presented with two abstract shapes and asked to match them with the pseudowords ‘bouba’ and ‘kiki’. Results revealed a significant preference (87.2%) associating the rounded shape with ‘bouba’ and the spiky shape with ‘kiki’. Additionally, participants were tasked with creating brand designs for ‘Kiki’ and ‘Bouba’, with 87.2% aligning their designs with their initial shape associations. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and a chi-square test, confirming a strong association between shape preferences and pseudoword assignment (χ²=132.05, p < .001). These findings underscore the robustness of the bouba-kiki effect across different cultural and linguistic contexts. This research contributes to interdisciplinary studies linking linguistics, psychology, and neuroscience, offering implications for language teaching methodologies and cognitive processing theories. By elucidating these associations, educators can enhance language learning strategies based on intuitive perceptual mechanisms. ABSTRACT Apriliyanti, Kiki, 2017. “Reflection of Author’s Profession in Akakabu Kenji Shiriizu Kessakusen Novel by Waku Shunzou (Mimetic Study Approach), Thesis, Japanese Literature, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Supervisor Fajria Noviana, S.S, M.Hum. Literary works are born because of its author. When writing, it is normal for the authors to take inspiration from their life and pour it into their work. Likewise, Akakabu Kenji Shiriizu Kessakusen, a novel by Waku Shunzou, has touches of his life inside it. The purpose of this research is to analyze how far the reflection of his life, especially his profession, in his work. The methods used in this research are qualitative descriptive and literature study. It’s analyzed with structural and mimetic theory. The structural theory is to analyze the elements constructing the novel (i.e intrinsic and extrinsic). The mimetic theory is to analyze the reflection of author’s profession as a lawyer in the trial process from the object. The result of this research is there’s reflection in the novel’s trial process as it follows the rules in the real world. Furthermore, there are inter-correlations between the facts that constructed the novel, such as law enforcer, crime scene, evidence, the situation of law enforcement, and the chronology of judicial process. From the author’s biography, it could be found the influence of the author’s life to the law content of his work. In conclusion, the author had taken the inspiration from the real world when he was writing this novel. Moreover, his profession as a lawyer made his works rich of knowledge about law. This article investigates how certain experiments in autobiographical writing articulate debates about ways to “witness without metaphor”, construction of “archives of reality” that allow questioning renewed concepts of experience, while we want to highlight how these writings are permeated by discussions regarding forms of organization, grouping, enrollment and disenrollment, regarding alternative publishing projects, and how to discuss their creative processes. Here, we first analyze the autobiographical experiment developed by Cuqui in KIKI 2 (2012), as part of an aesthetic, political, and ethical project criticism that articulates the challenge of the name and the relaboration of the insult for the construction and organization of the file and management of the firm. Second, Second, we attend to the relationship between autobiography and editing in KIKI 2, as we consider that the aesthetic-political programs of certain alternative editorials, construct and challenge images in the management of author portraits and performative spaces that explore and complexify the autobiographical procedures.

Making references to psychoanalysis and philosophy, Ross examines Smith's works - sculptures, drawings and installations depicting a fragmented body - according to notions which deal both with their materiality and their scope of meaning. Ambivalence and coexisting opposites, the skin as protection and container, abjection, randomness and the curio cabinet are alternately evoked by the author. Graham presents the artist's biographic itinerary, complete with excerpts from interviews. Cover with inner flap documenting numerous pieces. 48 bibl. ref

Re-writing publishing: fanfiction and self-publication in urban fantasy

Fanfiction is the practice of fans writing stories using the world and/or characters of an established work of fiction in order to rework this material. This thesis examines the relationship between fanfiction and digital self-publication within the popular fiction genre of urban fantasy. Emerging technologies in digital publishing have created a new world for authors and readers alike. Online publishing companies make it possible for any author to self-publish an ebook and distribute it through a global platform without an agent. The practice of writing fanfiction connected with urban fantasy has combined with the relative ease of digital self-publication to create an environment within which many new authors can explore non-traditional forms of publication. While all genres have access to this possibility, I suggest that urban fantasy is one of the few that is poised to revolutionise the publication industry due to its historical connection with digital fanfiction

Diffusion MRI case study in epilespy: A Hemispheric Regional Based Analysis of Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Tractography and Connectome in patients with Focal and Genetic Generalised Epilepsy

Background: Imaging in the field of epilepsy has been a lasting challenge. In genetic generalised epilepsy (GGE) patients, conventional neuroimaging methods such as the MRI often appear normal and even in focal epilepsy (FE) an obvious structural abnormality is not always visualised. The objective of this exploratory case study is to identify white and grey abnormalities in epilepsy patients based on diffusion weighted imaging in comparison with healthy subjects. Methods: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) at 3 Tesla is performed on 2 genetic generalised epilepsy patients, 1 focal epilepsy patient and 2 healthy subjects. Four DTI metrics (Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), Radial Diffusivity (RD) and Axial Diffusivity (AD) are compared based on the mean per region of interest between subjects and between hemispheres. A DTT map of the thalamo-cortical radiations is constructed based on a probabilistic tractography (iFOD2) as implemented in MRTrix. Based on this data the structural connectivity matrix is generated. A graph theoretical analysis is performed comparing node degree, global and local efficiency, characteristic path length, (average) clustering coefficient and (average) betweenness centrality. Constructed connectomes are compared for significant different connections between nodes using network based statistics. Results: Decreased FA and MD values are reported in the hippocampus of the FE patient. DTT showed decreased tract density in the thalamo-cortical radiations in one of the GGE patients and the FE patient, together with a decreased mean streamline length compared to the two healthy subjects, which can be interpreted as a reduced structural connectivity. Structural connectivity is decreased in the FE patient compared to the other four subjects based on graph analysis. This is demonstrated by the relatively high average clustering coefficient and characteristic path length, together with a low node degree, high local efficiency and high clustering coefficient in the thalamus, the basal ganglia and the hippocampus. Conclusion: These results are potentially of aid in identification of white and grey matter abnormalities in epilepsy patients. Especially in the FE brain several abnormalities in both DTI, DTT and graph analysis are observed compared to the healthy and GGE brain. However, for the use of DTI, DTT and graph analysis as a possible imaging biomarker, a standard processing pipeline with validated reference values ranges from the healthy population needs to be developed. Also the biological interpretation of changes in network measures needs to be validated.VBMEG projec

On intentions and goodness in “Spec Ops: the Line”

Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness and its many adaptations approach central themes of madness and the uncertainty of man through a variety of differing settings. Each of these adaptations ask and present the viewer with questions of their own, or from the source, which influence the progression of each respective portrayal. Yager Games' particular rendition, “Spec Ops: The Line,” questions the morality of one's actions in the context of their outcomes in contrast with their intentions. Is the goodness of the character's and player's actions determined solely by their outcome? By their intentions? Or by some combination of both? The questions posed in “Spec Ops” are presented through a series of choices that, while similar in generalized outcome, are vastly different in an emotional context which leads to another philosophical inquiry: Does the character's, and by extension, the player's emotional or psychological state have an influence on the morality an action? What is particularly interesting about this rendition of Conrad's classic is that it does not seek to give its own answers to these questions of morality; rather, it leaves the message up to the interpretation of the player. Unlike a book or a film, a video game of this nature requires the audience to both make these choices themselves and act upon them, making the player ultimately responsible for the events on the screen. This paper will seek to analyze and present a clearer image of morality in terms of the aforementioned factors using the conditions and presentation of “Spec Ops: The Line” as an example of the emotional investment an individual can have during life's many decision points.
