A New Exploration of the Dharma Lineage of Fazang (法藏): The Third Patriarch of the Huayan School
According to available biography materials, Fazang had six disciples, namely, Hongguan (宏觀), Wenchao (文超), Zhiguang (智光) of Huayansi in the East Capital (東都華嚴寺), Zongyi (宗一) of He’ensi (荷恩寺), Huiyuan (慧苑) of Jingfasi (靜法寺), and Huiying (慧英) of Jingxingsi (經行寺). Most studies on Fazang’s dharma lineage have only focused on Huiyuan because only Huiyuan’s works on Buddhism are still extant. However, Huiyuan has been criticized because “he rebelled against his master’s doctrines, and then was taken placed by Chengguan (澄觀) who was born a hundred years later 弟子慧苑悉叛其說, 滅后百年而得澄觀”. Therefore, research on Huiyuan is not mainstream either. This has led to a lack of studies on the Huayan School during the time between Fazang and Chengguan. In fact, Wenchao, a disciple of Fazang, authored ten volumes of Zifang Yiwangji (自防遺忘集) and one volume of Huayanjing Guanmai Yiji (華嚴經関脈義記) (hereinafter referred to as Guanmai (関脈)), and Guanjian (関鍵: the number of its volumes is unknown, and its text is most likely to be part of Zifang Yiwangji); Fashen (法詵), a disciple of Huiyuan, wrote Huayanjing Shu(華嚴經疏, thirty-one volumes); Kuaiji Shenxiu (會稽神秀), a disciple of Fashen, wrote the Commentary on the Avataṃsaka Sūtra (Huayanjing Shu (華嚴經疏), thirty volumes) and Miaoli Yuanchengguan (妙理圓成觀, three volumes). However, research on these figures is limited. This paper aims to enrich and supplement the study of the Dharma lineage of Fazang by examining the writings of Wenchao, Fashen, and Kuaiji Shenxiu and the ideas revealed by their manuscripts, which may further contribute to the study of the history of Huayan Buddhism and the history of Buddhist schools
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
An Exploration of Chengguan's Doctrine of the Dharma Realm from the Perspective of Religious Intent : A Comparative Study of Chengguan and Fazang
The concept of "Dharma Realm" (法界) is central to the study of Chengguan's (澄観) thought, the Fourth Patriarch of the Huayan School (華厳宗). While prior research has focused on Chengguan's theories like the "Four Dharma Realms" (四種法界) and "Dharma Realm Dependent Origination" (法界縁起), there has been limited exploration of differences between Chengguan and Fazang (法蔵), the Third Patriarch of Huayan, particularly regarding their interpretations of the Avatamsaka Sutra (華厳経). Fazang emphasizes the purity and untainted nature of the Buddha's enlightenment as depicted in the Avatamsaka Sutra, focusing on Huayan's purity, a consistent approach inherited from Zhiyan (智厳), the Second Patriarch. In contrast, Chengguan highlights the concept of perfect integration (円融) within Huayan and the Avatamsaka Sutra by focusing on the "Dharma Realm," emphasizing its "inconceivability" (不思議) and "non-obstruction" (無障礙). From a practitioner's perspective, Chengguan also emphasizes Huayan's practical application, using the relationship between Li(理)and Shi(事), centering on the "Four Dharma Realms." In summary, while Fazang and earlier Huayan masters emphasize purity and theoretical aspects, Chengguan underscores Huayan's uniqueness, linking its perfect integration and practical aspects to the theory of the "Dharma Realm.
Fazang’s Perspective on the Arousal of the Thought of Enlightenment 發心: An Examination Through the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna 大乘起信論 as Cited in the Huayanjing Tanxuanji 華嚴經探玄記
This study examines the parts of the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna (AFM) quoted in the Huayanjing tanxuanji (Tanxuanji) and sheds light on how Fazang, as a Huayan master, understood and utilized the AFM in the Tanxuanji. In the Tanxuanji, the AFM is quoted 36 times, and the arousal of the thought of enlightenment is most frequently mentioned. Therefore, this study focuses on the arousal of the thought of enlightenment and reveals Fazang’s unique understanding of this concept within Huayan thought. First, Fazang understood the stage of the aspiration to awakening through the perfection of faith as corresponding to the first abode. Second, Fazang explains several chapters of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra beyond the first stage of abode in the Tanxuanji by quoting the aspiration to awakening through the perfection of faith, which stems from his theory of becoming buddha by the completion of faith. Third, while Fazang categorized the AFM within the final teaching in terms of its concept of arousal of the thought of enlightenment, he may have recognized the AFM as aligning with either the same teaching of the one vehicle or the distinct teaching of the one vehicle. Fourth, Fazang’s view on the arousal of the thought of enlightenment in the Tanxuanji reflects his distinctive perspective evident in the Fazangshu. This understanding of Fazang explains why the arousal of the thought of enlightenment was quoted most frequently in the Tanxuanji
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
