    Experimentos exploratórios: os contextos da descoberta e da justificativa nos trabalhos de Gray e Du Fay

Principalmente na física, uma ciência experimental, é natural que as relações entre hipótese e experimentação estejam intimamente ligadas ao processo de construção do conhecimento. Entretanto, como enfatiza a literatura, é essencial refletir sobre esses vínculos que passam, muitas vezes, despercebidos tanto no âmbito da própria ciência como no procedimento pedagógico. Desta forma, o objetivo geral desta pesquisa foi evidenciar a dinâmica entre hipótese e experimentação na construção do conhecimento científico. Para tanto se desenvolveu um módulo de ensino que discute o conceito de experimentação exploratória (STEINLE, 1997; 2002) e a relação entre o contexto da descoberta e o contexto da justificativa, a partir dos estudos de Stephen Gray e Charles Du Fay em um momento incipiente da história da eletricidade. O módulo é constituído por um texto, dois artigos, três trechos de vídeos, seminários e uma atividade experimental, realizada em sala de aula. No primeiro semestre de 2013, ele foi implementado em um dos segmentos de uma disciplina sobre História da Ciência da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Os dados obtidos através de um questionário aberto, em termos gerais, mostraram que a proposta é eficaz, promovendo uma satisfatória articulação entre o conteúdo histórico e aspectos específicos da filosofia da ciência.Abstract : Experimentation is usually understood in the teaching of science as a means to refute or corroborate a theory and all its dynamic process flees to a methodological reflection. Especially in physics, an experimental science, it is natural that the relationship between hypothesis and experimentation are closely linked to the knowledge construction process. However, as emphasized by the literature, it is essential to reflect on those ties that are often overlooked both in the science itself as the pedagogical procedure. Thus, the objective of this research was to demonstrate the dynamic between hypothesis and experimentation in the construction of scientific knowledge. Therefore developed a teaching module that discusses the concept of exploratory experimentation (STEINLE 1997, 2002) and the relationship between the context of discovery and the context of justification, from the studies of Stephen Gray and Charles Du Fay at a time incipient history of electricity. The module consists of a text, two articles, three sections of videos, seminars and experimental activity conducted in the classroom. In the first half of 2013, it was implemented in one of the segments of a course in the History of Science, Federal University of Santa Catarina. The data obtained through an open questionnaire, in general, showed that the proposal is effective, promoting a sound relationship between the historical content and specific aspects of the philosophy of science

    Exact and Asymptotic Weighted Logrank Tests for Interval Censored Data: The interval R Package

    For right-censored data perhaps the most commonly used tests are weighted logrank tests, such as the logrank and Wilcoxon-type tests. In this paper we review several generalizations of those weighted logrank tests to interval-censored data and present an R package, interval, to implement many of them. The interval package depends on the perm package, also presented here, which performs exact and asymptotic linear permutation tests. The perm package performs many of the tests included in the already available coin package, and provides an independent validation of coin. We review analysis methods for interval-censored data, and we describe and show how to use the interval and perm packages.

The Fay Lee Home built in 1877 The home of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Lee was built in 1877 by William Denton Moulton. The house, located nine miles north of Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah, was constructed from sandstone brought from the Lake Creek area. There was a large, beautiful parlor and dining room with two staircases leading to the upper story which included several bedrooms. There was a huge, almost "refrigerator like" pantry, three full rooms and a vegetable cellar in the basement. The floors were ceder, an inch and a half thick. Mr. Moulton, the original owner, prospered in selling supplies to mining camps at Park City. He set up a complete spread on the ranch to handle the business, including a two story milk shed with a pipeline leading back to the calf shed for skim milk. There was a large slaughter house, an ice house and a well inside the barn. For its day it was very complete. The house became so well known that the stage coach line from Heber City to Salt Lake built a side road so that passengers could view both back and front of the home and its surroundings. When Mr. Moulton died, shortly after building the house, his brother-in-law Orson H, Lee became foreman and owner of the property and for thirty years, carried on the same work. His three sons, Orson Monroe, Dell, and Fay Lee, then took over the operation developing the property into a sheep ranch. One son, Fay Lee, owned the property until it was torn down in 1959 to make way for the new highway developments

    States of transience in drawing practices and the conservation of muserum artworks

    This practice-led study poses the question ‘What can a close analysis of conservation methods, treatments and theories with its temporal implications contribute to drawing practices that primarily employ the use of pre-existing artwork?’ Through the lens and action of art practice this study challenges certain understandings of both drawing and conservation as temporally possessing linear chronological properties. Employing an emergent, qualitative practice-led methodology each chapter charts a discrete terrain that identifies and discusses key comparative issues and problems that affect both drawing and conservation. These include: the difficulties of definitions and terminology in both contingent fields and the space this opens for interpretative responses, a critique of positivistic claims made by scientific conservation in identifying artist’s intention using an anachronic analysis of the detail. The fluctuating values of the authorial and substitutional presence of the indexical mark and trace in restoration and representational drawing is examined, and an evaluation of formats and strategies in drawing that position themselves relevant to a depiction and representation of anachronic states of transience is investigated. To focus the range of discourses within conservation this work concentrates on the paintings of Johannes Vermeer. Specifically, on the conservation activities and diagnostic imagery that have informed treatments to these works. This study is further supported by documented conversations with key restorers of Vermeer’s work, and artists who also employ representational drawing strategies in response to pre-existing works. This research concludes its findings by arguing for the conditions and ontologies of drawing and conservation to be understood temporally as anachronic activities. Whereby, as each can respond to pre-existing works, their relationship to time is non-chronological, durational and plural. This work is intended to contribute to the fields of drawing practice and research, anachronic art historical studies, contemporary conservation theory, and to practice-led epistemologies

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
