Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Quanta diversidade funcional é necessária para acelerar o desenvolvimento inicial de agroflorestas e da restauração ecológica?
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Agrárias, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Recursos Genéticos Vegetais, Florianópolis, 2024.Falhas comuns e custosas durante o estabelecimento inicial de árvores de lento crescimento em pomares, plantios florestais e restauração ecológica, são em parte devidas às condições microclimáticas, edáficas, de luminosidade, herbivoria e competição com vegetação espontânea. Ainda faltam regras de montagem generalizáveis e úteis para guiar a combinação de espécies compatíveis e assim criar as condições ecológicas adequadas para árvores valiosas sensíveis, aproveitando os processos de facilitação e complementaridade, minimizando a competição. Portanto, objetivou-se estabelecer critérios generalizáveis para guiar praticantes agroflorestais na escolha de espécies de crescimento rápido e vida curta, adequadas para promover o estabelecimento de árvores tolerantes à sombra de lento crescimento e alto valor econômico e ecológico. Para testar se a diversidade de grupos funcionais universais e amplamente reconhecíveis de plantas prediz a compatibilidade de crescimento de até quatro espécies plantadas juntas em núcleos adensados de 50 cm de diâmetro, foi implementado um experimento no município de Rio do Sul (SC), na região sul do Brasil. 100 espécies de plantas com importantes funções ecológicas e/ou econômicas foram classificadas em quatro grupos funcionais simples com base em sua longevidade. Os grupos funcionais foram combinados em consórcios de duas espécies (?bicultivos?) e quatro espécies (?tetracultivos?) e plantados em 525 unidades experimentais (?núcleos?). Assim, o delineamento experimental representa um gradiente de diversidade funcional na longevidade (e indiretamente na altura máxima da planta), que variam ao longo do tempo à medida que as plantas anuais completam seu ciclo de vida e os grupos funcionais de vida mais longa crescem proporcionalmente em tamanho (aumentando os pesos na diversidade funcional e nas médias funcionais). Os resultados mostram que os grupos funcionais propostos são complementares e usá-los em agrofloresta ou restauração florestal acelera o crescimento inicial e, provavelmente, a sucessão ecológica. A diversidade funcional tem um efeito positivo no desenvolvimento de espécies de longa vida e crescimento lento, e o design agroflorestal pode aproveitar esse efeito para facilitar o estabelecimento dessas espécies com alto valor ecológico e potencial econômico. Há um possível trade-off entre a produção agrícola de curto prazo e o desenvolvimento de árvores de alto valor ecológico. O corte seletivo de biomassa (corte, desbaste, poda) é essencial para superar esse trade-off e maximizar o acúmulo de biomassa, o fechamento do dossel e a melhoria do microclima. Os grupos funcionais de longevidade usados por profissionais de agrofloresta têm relevância ecológica e podem ser úteis para o planejamento prático em agrofloresta e restauração.Abstract: Widespread and costly failures of valuable slow-growing trees during the initial establishment of orchards, timber plantations and ecological restoration, are partly due to microclimatic, soil, light constraints, herbivory and competition with spontaneous vegetation. We still lack generalizable assembly rules useful for practitioners to combine compatible species to create suitable ecological conditions promoting sensitive, high-value trees, by harnessing facilitation and complementarity, while minimizing competition. Therefore, my objective was to establish generalizable decision criteria to guide agroforest practitioners in selecting compatible fast-growing species with short life spans, to promote the establishment of slow-growing shade tolerant trees with high economic and ecological value. To test whether the diversity of universal, widely recognizable functional groups of plants predicts the growth compatibility among up to four species planted densely together in nuclei of 50cm diameter, an experiment was implemented in Rio do Sul municipality (SC) in subtropical humid Southern Brazil. One hundred plant species with important ecological and/or economic functions were classified into four simple functional groups based on their longevity. The functional groups were combined into two-species (?bicultures?) and four-species intercrops (?tetracultures?) and planted in 525 experimental units (?nuclei?). Thus, the experimental design represents a gradient of functional diversity in longevity (and indirectly in maximum plant height), which vary over time as annuals complete their life cycle and longer-lived functional groups grow proportionally in size (increasing weights in functional diversity and functional means). The results show that the proposed functional groups are complementary and using them in agroforestry or forest restoration accelerates initial growth and likely ecological succession. Functional diversity has a positive effect on the development of long-lived, slow-growing species and agroforestry design can harness this effect to facilitate the establishment of these species with high ecological and potential economic value. There is a possible trade-off between short-term agricultural production and the development of trees of high ecological value. Selective biomass cutting (mowing, slashing, pruning) is key to overcome this trade-off and maximize biomass accrual, canopy closure and microclimate amelioration. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
