Coupled Effects of Energy Dissipation and TravellingVelocity in the Run-Out Simulation of High-SpeedGranular

    No full text
The run-out of high speed granular masses or avalanches along mountain streams, till their arrest, is analyti-cally modeled. The power balance of a sliding granular mass along two planar sliding surfaces is written by taking into account the mass volume, the slopes of the surfaces, the fluid pressure and the energy dissipation. Dissipation is due to collisions and displacements, both localized within a layer at the base of the mass. The run-out, the transition from the first to the second sliding surface and the final run-up of the mass are de-scribed by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), solved in closed form (particular cases) or by means of numerical procedures (general case). The proposed solutions allow to predict the run-up length and the speed evolution of the sliding mass as a function of the involved geometrical, physical and mechanical parameters as well as of the simplified rheological laws assumed to express the energy dissipation effects. The corre-sponding solutions obtained according to the Mohr-Coulomb or Voellmy resistance laws onto the sliding surfaces are recovered as particular cases. The run-out length of a documented case is finally back analysed through the proposed model

Interaction-induced phases in the half-filled Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model in one dimension

We explore the ground-state properties of a one-dimensional model with two orbitals per site, where, in addition to atomic energies +/- M and intra- and interorbital hoppings, the intraorbital Hubbard (U) and nearestneighbor density-density (V ) repulsions are included. Our results are primarily based on a Jastrow-Slater wave function and variational Monte Carlo methods but also corroborated by density-matrix renormalization group calculations. In the noninteracting limit, when varying M > 0, a gapless point separates a trivial phase from a topological one. The inclusion of a finite Hubbard-U repulsion does not give rise to any phase transition within the topological region, inducing a smooth crossover into a Haldane (spin gapped) insulator; notably, the string-order parameter, which characterizes the latter phase, is already finite in the noninteracting limit. Most importantly, at finite values of U, the transition between the trivial and topological states is not direct, since an emergent insulator, which shows evidence of sustaining gapless spin excitations, intrudes between them. A small-V interaction further stabilizes the intermediate insulator, while a sufficiently large value of this nearest-neighbor repulsion gives rise to two different charge-density wave insulators, one fully gapped and another still supporting gapless spin excitations. Our results demonstrate the richness of multiorbital Hubbard models, in the presence of a topologically nontrivial band structure, and serve as a basis for future investigations on similar two-dimensional models

Conditional vs Unconditional Quantile Regression Models: A Guide to Practitioners

    No full text
This paper analyzes two econometric tools that are used to evaluate distributional effects, condi-tional quantile regression (CQR) and unconditional quantile regression (UQR). Our main objectiveis to shed light on the similarities and differences between these methodologies. An interestingtheoretical derivation to connect CQR and UQR is that, for the effect of a continuous covariate, the UQR is a weighted average of the CQR. This imposes clear bounds on the values that UQRcoefficients can take and provides a way to detect misspecification. The key here is a match be-tween CQR whose predicted values are the closest to the unconditional quantile. For a binarycovariate, however, this relationship is not valid. We illustrate these models using age returns andgender gap in Argentina for 2019 and 2020.Fil: Alejo, Javier. Universidad de la República; UruguayFil: Favata, Federico. In this article, Federico Italiano explores the relationship between literature and cartography. Beginning with Stevenson’s Treasure Island, the author frames the topic through a general theoretical lens on the spatial dimension of literary texts. He then focuses on a specific phenomenon of literary "carticity"—the diegetic presence of the map, that is, the map as an integral element of the narrative structure. Among others, Italiano examines the works of Houellebecq and Cormac McCarthy

Precarious work is a general feature of the clothing industry around the world and has an impact on the quality of life for those who work in it. The aim of this work is to analyze the link between working in the sewing industry and poverty for the 2003-2018 period in Argentina. We intend to answer the question ‘does working in the sewing industry raise one’s odds of living in a poor household, conditional on observable attributes of households and individuals?’ Using data from household surveys, we perform a Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition and conclude that: a) sewing workers show significantly higher levels of poverty than the rest of the workers in the economy, b) such differences are partly explained by individual attributes (such as low skills, for instance), and c) they are also explained by the fact that working in the sewing sector raises the odds of being poor, controlling for observable attributesFil: Ludmer, Gustavo. [English]: The Volume represents the endpoint of a recent initiative, which was conceived, shared and fully realized within the social group of the "Prof in Cucina e in Cantina". Here, the several Authors, represented by the teaching and the technical/administrative/librarian staff of the Federico II University in Naples, the oldest public University in the world, propose recipes and anecdotal descriptions of their educational, social and work-related paths, including some episodes from the recent COVID-19 pandemic. A menu inspired to Frederick II introduces the book, with 3 recipes inspired to the Liber de coquina, a cooking manual compiled at the Emperor's court. Each of the following 8 thematic chapters of the book is also anticipated by a brief insert reporting historical reconstructions of the alimentary habits at the court of Frederick II. Thus, old and new atmospheres, accompanied by the scent of aromas and suggestions inspired by the experience of each Author, come together to offer Readers fragments of everyday life at the court of Frederick II, in the 21st century
