Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos da TraduçãoEste trabalho de dissertação é fruto de estudos de teorias da tradução e teve como princípio norteador a aquisição de conhecimentos sobre aspectos relacionados com a produção da obra original, para só então definir a posição do tradutor. Somente após a contextualização da obra original e análise das características do autor concretizou-se a tradução do conto Lizards in Jamshyd's Courtyard de William Faulkner. Para manter a força do conto original não houve simplesmente a preocupação em conseguir encontrar equivalentes ou traduzir palavra por palavra, mas sim, em adentrar no jogo de significantes, de maneira a tornar a tradução o mais próximo possível do original, respeitando a heterogeneidade das situações lingüísticas e culturais existentes entre a língua inglesa do original e a língua portuguesa no Brasil, para a qual o conto foi traduzido. Muitos obstáculos foram encontrados ao longo desse processo, e a estes, foram apresentadas soluções. Tanto as hipóteses levantadas para a solução dos problemas, quanto as decisões tomadas descritas nesta pesquisa estão ancoradas nos princípios teóricos de Lawrence Venutti, Georges Mounin, John C. Catford e Antoine Berman. This essay has its origins in studies about translation theories and in the knowledge acquisition about the aspects related with the production of the original work. Just after those studies, was established the position as translator. And only after the contextualization of the original work and the analysis of the author characteristics it was started the translation process of the tale Lizards in Jamshyd's Courtyard written by William Faulkner, this tale is part of the novel Hamlet written by the same author. To maintain the strength of the original tale there was not just a concern about getting equivalents or translating word by word , but was to be very close to the characteristics of the original tale; considering what is heterogeneous in the linguistic and cultural situations between the English language in which the original tale was written, and the Portuguese language from Brazil where the tale has been translated. The hypothesis, the possible solutions to the problems found, and the decisions taken in this research are based on: Lawrence Venutti, Georges Mounin, John C. Cattford and Antoine Berman's theories

    The influence of physico-chemical material properties on erosion processes in the badlands of Basilicata, Southern Italy

    Piping (tunnelling) appears to be one of the more significant methods of erosion in the badlands in the Plio-Pleistocene marinesourced clays of the Basilicata area in Southern Italy. A detailed field investigation of the pedological, textural, mineralogical and geochemical properties of the clay-rich terrains widely outcropping in two selected badland field sites (the Fossa Bradanica area and the Bacino di Sant'Arcangelo) was undertaken to further elucidate process variability across the complex site. Paralleling findings from other piped badlands, certain physico-chemical properties of the clays were found to influence the different erosional processes in fundamental ways. The very dispersive nature of the materials enhances pipe enlargement so that subsurface flow rapidly becomes the dominant process, causing pipe enlargement by a process of positive feedback. The paper speculates on the progressive role of surface and subsurface processes in the genesis of all evolutional badland forms (calanchi, calanchi mammellonari and biancane). In an early stage, the calanchi mammellonari are produced, as slope mounds become increasingly separated by a dense network of small inclined pipes in the intermediate part of the slopes, a site which is presumed to favour elevated subsurface flow. When the overburden collapses, many cones are isolated in these portions of the slope. A second stage follows in which overland flow dominates, with the water canalizing into small gullies generated by the collapsed crust. At the base of many slopes, this same mechanism produces biancane as residual cones. Because of the structural weakness of piped materials, mass movements cannot be ruled out. In a few locations, landsliding may be involved, especially in the formation of calanchi mammellonari. In this case the intersection of the vertical pipes with the impermeable substratum focuses subsurface flow, and collapse of the surface along this failure plane. Subsequent remodelling occurs by surface processes, since the ‘catchment volume’ for large pipes no longer exists. This interpretation differs from that of others who have argued that in other locations the biancane formation is linked to the development of large vertical pipes along tectonic joints. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.     Data integrity: an often-ignored aspect of safety systems: executive summary

    Data is all-pervasive and is found in all aspects of modern computer systems, and yet many engineers seem reluctant to recognise the importance of data integrity. The conventional view of data, as simply an aspect of software, underestimates the role played by data errors in the behaviour of the system and their potential effect on the integrity of the overall system. In many cases hazard analysis is not applied to data in the same way that it is applied to other system components. Without data integrity requirements, data development and data provision may not attract the degree of rigour that would be required of other system components of a similar integrity. This omission also has implications for safety assessment where the data is often ignored or neglected. This position becomes self reenforcing, as without integrity requirements the importance of data integrity remains hidden. This research provides a wide-ranging overview of the use (and abuse) of data within safety systems, and proposes a range of strategies and techniques to improve the safety of such systems. A literature review and a survey of industrial practice confirmed the conventional view of data, and showed that there is little consistency in the methods used for data development. To tackle these problems this work proposes a novel paradigm, in which data is considered as a separate and distinct system component. This approach not only ensures that data is given the importance that it deserves, but also simplifies the task of providing guidance that is specific to data. Having developed this conceptual framework for data, the work then goes on to develop lifecycle models to assist with data development, and to propose a range of techniques appropriate for the various lifecycle phases. An important aspect of the development of any safety-related system is the production of a safety argument, and this research looks in some detail at the treatment of data, and data development, within this justification. The industrial survey reveals that in data-intensive systems data is often developed quite separately from other elements of the system. It also reveals that data is often produced by an extended data supply chain that may involve a number of disparate organisations. These characteristics of data distinguish it from other system components and greatly complicate the achievement and demonstration of safety. This research proposes methods of modelling complex data supply chains and proposes techniques for tackling the difficult task of safety justification for such systems

    Laboratory measurements of the frictional properties of the Zuccale low-angle normal fault, Elba Island, Italy

    Using a case study from the island of Elba, Italy, we seek to test the hypothesis that the presence of minerals with low frictional strengths can explain prolonged slip on low-angle normal faults. The central core of the Zuccale low-angle normal fault contains a distinctive fault rock zonation that developed during progressive exhumation. Most fault rock components preserve microstructural evidence for having accommodated deformation entirely, or partly, by frictional mechanisms. One millimeter thick sample powders of all the major fault rock components were deformed in a triaxial deformation apparatus under water-saturated conditions, at room temperature, and at constant effective normal stresses of 25, 50, and 75 MPa. Pore fluid pressure was maintained at 50 MPa throughout. Overall, the coefficient of friction (m) of the fault rocks varies between 0.25 and 0.8, emphasizing the marked strength heterogeneity that may exist within natural fault zones. Also, m is strongly dependent on fault rock mineralogy and is 0.6 for fault rocks dominated by quartz, dolomite, calcite, and amphibole. Localization of frictional slip within talc-rich portions of the fault core can potentially explain movements along the Zuccale fault over a wide range of depths within the upper crust, although the mechanical importance of the talc-bearing fault rocks likely decreased following their dismemberment into a series of poorly connected fault rock lenses. Additionally, slip within clay-bearing fault gouges with m between 0.4 and 0.5 may have facilitated movements in the uppermost (<2 km) crust. For several other fault rock components, m varies between 0.5 and 0.8, and mineralogical weakening alone is insufficient to account for low-angle slip. In the latter fault rock components, other weakening mechanisms such as the development of high fluid pressures, or dissolution-precipitation creep, may have been particularly important in reducing fault strength.PublishedB024073.3.     Since the beginning of time man has sinned and suffered. Many writers have, in various manners, written about man and his sins, William Faulkner is one of these writers. For many years he pictured only the somber side of the south but recently he has come to its defense. Els work at first did not receive much recognition because he painted such sordid pictures of man but as his works began to grow, the pattern of sin and salvation which he portrayed became comprehensible to the reading ( V/ \u27 1 - public,\u27Because it is the opinion of most o.; the critics that Faulkner\u27s work does not receive all the attention it deserves, the problem of this thesis has been designed to explain the sin and evil which exist in the world as Faulkner sees it and to explain Faulkner as a Mississippi Puritan, thus pointing out that his theories give him hope for the human race. Words have various meanings but the writer should like to employ sin as the breaking or violation of God\u27s law and salvation will then become the setting free of the soul from sin. What does sin mean to William Faulkner? Or, more specifically, what kinds of sin are the novels of Faulkner concerned with? An analysis of his major characters will reveal the fundamental aspects of his theme of sin. It seems that he Is an investigator of the psychological condition of his characters. He tries to understand and to present the principles which govern motivation, reason, and action. Faulkner believes that the Individual often refuses to come to terras with the disorder of his contemporary world. In spite of all the potentialities a man has for adjustment, he becomes a demon. He then does what he Just has to do. In all of his novels, Faulkner Is implying that the individual In our times frequently does not want to explore the causes of being. The horror of the situation lies, for Faulkner, in the fact that people have neither the strength nor the insight necessary to relieve themselves of their burdens. It cannot be asserted that Faulkner rebels against civilization. His novels rebel against those patterns which equate sin with order and d © not permit a man to prove that he has the strength to stand alone

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
