Shah Abdul-Latif Bhitai and the Call to Gallows
Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is one of the most revered saints and most loved poets of Sindh. His Shah jo Risalo has been translated into many languages from Sindhi and a large number of scholars, both Pakistani and foreign, have tried to understand and explain the philosophy and the message in Shah Latif`s poetry. The author has explained in this paper that the worldly love had led Shah Latif to eternal and real love, that is the love of God, and his worldly love is but a metaphor for the eternal and true love of Allah, a relationship between the soul of an individual and the Soul of the Cosmos. But the author laments that tyranny of the feudal system still exists in Sindh and Shah Latif`s call to gallows remains silent
Baba Nanak and Sufism
Baba Nanak was the pioneer of Sikh religion but he also wrote poetry and wrote certain other things. This article analyses the impact of Muslim philosophy and Muslim saints on Nanak and his works. Nanak had close and friendly ties with some Muslim Sufis and had befriended some Sufis and musicians who belonged to Baba Fareed’s ‘jamat khana’. Some of the verses by Baba Fareed are included in Sikh scripture as well. The author has also quoted some verses by Allama Iqbal eulogising Baba Nanak
The Mystic Melodies of Sultan Bahu
Pakistan’s folk literature can be proud of some of the most exhilarating poetry composed in different Pakistani languages. One such example is the poetry composed by Sultan Bahu, a mystic, poet and scholar from Punjab. The article discusses how Sultan Bahu’s Sufi poetry is an expression of disillusionment with the tradition or formal forms of religion as it emphasises the individual and personal relationship with God, a spiritual experience that he amply describes in his ecstatic poetry. This paper discusses how Sultan Bahu emphasises the power of love and stresses love is more important than the learning in formal or traditional sense. With examples from Sultan Bahu’s Punjabi poetry, the author concludes that Sultan Bahu lives on not only in Punjabi Sufi poetry but his views are also reflected in the poetry of Allama Muhammad Iqbal
Bulleh Shah: Thought and Praxis
Bulleh Shah is one of the most well-known and loved poets of the Punjabi language. This article describes with quotations from his Punjabi poetry that Bulleh Shah did not believe in the beliefs and practices of common people who had been influenced by the Brahmanic concept of class system. In those days Punjab was passing through a tumultuous period of its history and the common Muslims abhorred those who belonged to lower social layers. The Mystic Ideology of Baba Farid, the Sufi poet
Shiekh Fariduddin Ganj Shakar was a Sufi and a holy man. To him are attributed a few verses dubbed as one of the earliest samples of Urdu poetry. He also composed poetry in Punjabi. This article discusses the message of Baba Farid as spread through his poetry which is but a manifestation of his mystic ideology. The article stresses that Baba Farid's ideology brought many Hindus, once considered untouchables by the Brahmins, into the humanistic and universal fold of Islam. Quoting from Baba Farid's Urdu and Punjabi poetry, the article stresses that the spread of Islam in the subcontinent revolutionised the caste system treating everyone at par and this revolution was brought about through Sufi ideology spearheaded by Baba Farid
Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and The Popular Image of Sainthood in Pakistan
Lal Shahbaz Qalandar is one of the most well-known Sufis of Pakistan. His shrine at Sehwan Sharif (Sindh) is thronged by devotees during the annual congregations and different songs are sung to pay homage to him. But Qalandar was a great Persian poet as well. In his Persian poetry there are some recurrent themes. This paper analyses those themes and finds some interesting motifs in Qalandar's poetry, especially when seen against his disagreement with some of his contemporaries and his popularity amongst the general public. This essay is an attempt to highlight Iqbal's concept of democracy. Iqbal has derived his democratic ideal from the teaching of Islam. He is of the view that "The Essence of Tauhid, as a working idea, is equality, solidarity, and freedom. The state, from the Islamic standpoint, is an Endeavour to transform these ideal principles into space-time forces, an aspiration to realize Tuahid is the fountainhead of the Islamic concept of democracy as formulated by Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Allama Iqbal's philosophical writings as well as his poetic compositions on the subject are my main source of inspiration in this study
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
