Clausilia costata var. subcostata Bellini 1908

    No full text
Clausilia costata var. subcostata Bellini, 1908a: 14 [ex Tiberi ms.] Type locality: Ischia Island (Naples, Italy). Original description: “stries peu visibles” [more visible striae—with respect to an unknown clausilid, reported as Clausilia costata Ziegler]. Remarks: having been instituted on the basis of insignificant morphological characteristics, we rank it infrasubspecific, and thus not available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10.2, 45.5, 45.6, glossary). Clausilia costata var. subcostata Bellini, 1908 would also be a primary homonym of Clausilia costata subsp. subcostata Boettger, 1879. Cochlodina costata (Pfeiffer, 1828) does not occur in southern Italy (Welter-Schultes 2012); this taxon was not figured by Bellini (1908a), and thus we are not able to understand what he actually described.Published as part of Fasulo, Giuseppe, Duraccio, Sergio, Federico, Antonio & Crocetta, Fabio, 2019, The (almost) unknown Italian naturalist Raffaello Bellini (1874 - 1930): biography malacological publications, and status of his recent molluscan taxa, pp. 343-369 in Zootaxa 4668 (3) on page 357, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4668.3.3, http://zenodo.org/record/344956

Pseudomurex meyendorffi var. caprensis Bellini 1929

Pseudomurex meyendorffi var. caprensis Bellini, 1929a: 38 Type locality: Capri Island (Naples, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Original description: “la forma di Capri, non rara a profondità, è corta, rigonfia e differisce da quella non solo tipica, ma di altre località mediterranee” [the variety from Capri—of Coralliophila meyendorffii (Calcara, 1845), reported as Pseudomurex meyendorffi Calcara —, not rare at depths, is short and swollen, and differs from both the typical shells and the ones from other Mediterranean localities]. Remarks: having been instituted as a geographic race, we rank it subspecific, and thus available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10, glossary). Listed as a simple variety or a synonym of Coralliophila meyendorffii (Calcara, 1845) by several authors (Sabelli et al. 1992; Fasulo 2012), despite no figures ever being published by Bellini (1929a). Spano et al. (2002) listed it as a valid species, “ C [oralliophila] caprensis ”, but with no further comment or description. The original description may easily fit other Mediterranean taxa than C. meyendorffii, the closer ones being Coralliophila brevis (Blainville, 1832) and Coralliophila panormitana (Monterosato, 1869) due to original description and declared depth. Thus, it is considered a nomen dubium (ICZN 2012: glossary).Published as part of Fasulo, Giuseppe, Duraccio, Sergio, Federico, Antonio & Crocetta, Fabio, 2019, The (almost) unknown Italian naturalist Raffaello Bellini (1874 - 1930): biography malacological publications, and status of his recent molluscan taxa, pp. 343-369 in Zootaxa 4668 (3) on page 353, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4668.3.3, http://zenodo.org/record/344956

Gastrana fragilis var. rarilamellosa Bellini 1903

Gastrana fragilis var. rarilamellosa Bellini, 1903a: 27 Type locality: not specified [inferred as presumably described from Phlaegrean lagoons (Fusaro Lake, Lucrino Lake, and Miseno Lake, Bacoli / Pozzuoli area, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)]. Original description: “strie più larghe e più distanti; forma dipendente dal polimorfismo di questa specie” [shell with wider and more distant striae—with respect to Gastrana fragilis (Linnaeus, 1758), reported as Gastrana fragilis L. —; a form depending from the polymorphism of this species]. Remarks: having been instituted on the basis of insignificant morphological characteristics, we rank it infrasubspecific, and thus not available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10.2, 45.5, 45.6, glossary). This seems to be an overlooked taxon, never reported after its original description apart by Bellini (1929a) in his general overview of the marine molluscan species living in the Gulf of Naples. Taking into account the absence of congeneric and/or similar species from the Gulf of Naples and generally the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the fact that this species is commonly encountered in the Phlaegrean lagoons (authors’ unpublished data), we are prone to consider that it was truly described as based on Gastrana fragilis (Linnaeus, 1758).Published as part of Fasulo, Giuseppe, Duraccio, Sergio, Federico, Antonio & Crocetta, Fabio, 2019, The (almost) unknown Italian naturalist Raffaello Bellini (1874 - 1930): biography malacological publications, and status of his recent molluscan taxa, pp. 343-369 in Zootaxa 4668 (3) on page 356, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4668.3.3, http://zenodo.org/record/344956

Cardium (Parvicardium) exiguum var. minimum Bellini 1903

Cardium (Parvicardium) exiguum var. minimum Bellini, 1903a: 23, 26, fig. 8 (Fig. 4I: left) Type locality: Fusaro Lake (Bacoli, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Original description: “dimensioni piccolissime” [very small sizes]. Remarks: having been instituted on the basis of insignificant morphological characteristics, we rank it infrasubspecific, and thus not available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10.2, 45.5, 45.6, glossary). Despite this, it was listed as a variety of Parvicardium exiguum (Gmelin, 1791) by Hyllelberg (2004). It would be also preoccupied by Cardium minimum Philippi, 1836. Interestingly, this variety was then skipped by Bellini (1929a) in the general overview of the marine molluscan species living in the Gulf of Naples. This taxon was based on a juvenile shell of P. exiguum, a species that was found again during samplings held in the area in 1975–2018 (Ferro & Russo 1982; authors’ unpublished data).Published as part of Fasulo, Giuseppe, Duraccio, Sergio, Federico, Antonio & Crocetta, Fabio, 2019, The (almost) unknown Italian naturalist Raffaello Bellini (1874 - 1930): biography malacological publications, and status of his recent molluscan taxa, pp. 343-369 in Zootaxa 4668 (3) on pages 355-356, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4668.3.3, http://zenodo.org/record/344956

Molluscs of the “Real Orto Botanico di Napoli”

The results of two years of research on the molluscs present in the Botanical Garden of Naples are reported and compared with the sole similar study published in 1875 and with other reports in the literature, the last of which published in 1930 by Boettger. As a general result, a noticeable decrease in the number of species present in the site was recorded. However, some species not reported before have also been observed, and namely Vallonia costata (O.F. Müller, 1774), Orcula dolium (Draparnaud, 1801) and Planorbarius corneus (Linnaeus, 1758), all recorded for the first time in Campania, and in addition Carychium minimum O.F. Müller, 1774, which appears to be well settled in the studied enclave; for this latter species the only previous indication was found in the bibliography for Campania (Bellini 1898). Finally, some limacid slugs, previously found and recorded only by Boettger (1930), have been found

Cardium (Parvicardium) exiguum var. paludosum Bellini 1903

Cardium (Parvicardium) exiguum var. paludosum Bellini, 1903a: 23, 26, figs. 7a–b (Fig. 4I: right) Type locality: Fusaro Lake (Bacoli, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Original description: “notevole per la sua larghezza dovuta all’eccessivo sviluppo del diametro antero-posteriore” [notable for its width due to a massive development of the antero-posterior diameter]. Remarks: having been instituted as race connected to a specific habitat, we rank it subspecific, and thus available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10, glossary). This seems to be in disagreement with Hyllelberg (2004), who did not explicitly declare it infrasubspecific, but stated that “no evidence of subspecific status” occurs. Hyllelberg (2004) also listed Cardium exiguum var. paludosum Bellini, 1903 as a variety of Parvicardium exiguum (Gmelin, 1791). Taking into account the figure attached to its description (Fig. 4F), as well as its peculiar shape, it constitutes a misidentification of a juvenile of Cerastoderma glaucum (Bruguière, 1789). On the other hand, it is also a primary homonym of Cardium edule var. paludosa Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus, 1892 from Corse, also instituted on C. glaucum, and thus permanently invalid (ICZN 2012: Art. 57). Cerastoderma glaucum was found again during samplings held in the area in 1978–1979 (Russo & Ferro 1980; Ferro & Russo 1982) and 1975–2018 (authors’ unpublished data), and it constitutes one of the commonest taxa in the area.Published as part of Fasulo, Giuseppe, Duraccio, Sergio, Federico, Antonio & Crocetta, Fabio, 2019, The (almost) unknown Italian naturalist Raffaello Bellini (1874 - 1930): biography malacological publications, and status of his recent molluscan taxa, pp. 343-369 in Zootaxa 4668 (3) on page 356, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4668.3.3, http://zenodo.org/record/344956

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
