© 2020 The Author(s). Published by IOP Publishing Ltd. In this work, we present the first spectroscopic measurements of conversion electrons originating from the decay of metastable gaseous 83mKr with the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment. The obtained results represent one of the major commissioning milestones for the subsequent direct neutrino mass measurement with KATRIN. The successful campaign demonstrates the functionalities of the KATRIN beamline. Precise measurement of the narrow K-32, L3-32, and N2,3-32 conversion electron lines allowed to verify the eV-scale energy resolution of the KATRIN main spectrometer necessary for competitive measurement of the absolute neutrino mass scale

The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is designed to measure a high-precision integral spectrum of the endpoint region of T2 beta decay, with the primary goal of probing the absolute mass scale of the neutrino. After a first tritium commissioning campaign in 2018, the experiment has been regularly running since 2019, and in its first two measurement campaigns has already achieved a sub-eV sensitivity. After 1000 days of data-taking, KATRIN's design sensitivity is 0.2 eV at the 90% confidence level. In this white paper we describe the current status of KATRIN; explore prospects for measuring the neutrino mass and other physics observables, including sterile neutrinos and other beyond-Standard-Model hypotheses; and discuss research-and-development projects that may further improve the KATRIN sensitivity.Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 70 pages excluding references; 35 figures. Sterile Intraocular Inflammation Associated With Faricimab

    No full text
Importance: Randomized clinical trials are conducted to establish both drug safety and efficacy. However, evidence of adverse events associated with these drugs in the clinical practice setting can be of value at generating hypotheses regarding less common safety issues, even if causality cannot be determined. Objective: To present and analyze cases of intraocular inflammation associated with faricimab therapy in patients referred to a single European institution. Design, setting, and participants: This was a review starting in April of 2024 of an observational case series. Patients were from a single academic-based tertiary referral center in Switzerland. Included in the analysis were patients referred for intraocular inflammation soon after receiving a faricimab intravitreal injection between June 1, 2022, and March 5, 2024. Exposure: Faricimab, 6 mg (0.05 mL of a 120-mg/mL solution), administrated for neovascular age-related macular degeneration or diabetic macular edema. Main outcomes and measures: The systemic and ocular histories and imaging data available were reviewed. The following were evaluated: visual acuity measured with habitual correction using the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study charts before and after the event; intraocular pressure; patient symptoms; anterior, intermediate, or posterior location of the intraocular inflammation; and the presence of retinal vasculitis. Multimodal imaging including color fundus photographs, fluorescein angiograms, indocyanine green angiograms, and optical coherence tomography were reviewed. Results: A total of 12 eyes from 7 patients (mean [SD] age, 73.3 [16.7] years; 4 female [57.1%]) over 22 months were identified as having noninfectious intraocular inflammation after intravitreal faricimab injections. Among these cases, in 2 eyes, retinal vasculitis was present together with anterior and posterior inflammation. One of the 2 eyes had an occlusive form of vasculitis of the arteries and veins, leading to subsequent macular capillary nonperfusion and clinically relevant irreversible vision deterioration from 20/80 to 20/2000. The remaining eyes were characterized by moderate anterior segment inflammation without substantial vision changes. The intraocular inflammation event occurred after a median (IQR) of 3.5 (2.0-4.3) faricimab injections. The median (IQR) interval between the last faricimab injection and the diagnosis of inflammation was 28 (24-38) days. Increased intraocular pressure of 30 mm Hg or higher was found in 3 eyes. Conclusions and relevance: This case series highlights the occurrence of rare, but potentially severe, intraocular inflammation associated with faricimab therapy. Although these findings do not prove causality and can only generate hypotheses for future investigations, these results suggest the importance of continuous surveillance and monitoring for patients undergoing faricimab therapy to promptly identify and manage potential adverse events

The haunted public sphere: women and the power of emotion in the works of Alexander Kluge and the films of the Berlin School

My dissertation sheds light on the German filmmaker and author Alexander Kluge and his ideas on filmmaking as they evolved out of his conception of the public versus the private spheres since the early 1960s. It was Kluge’s contention that personal experiences of war and violence could not be expressed publicly in the postwar Federal Republic, causing a rift between the two realms and a haunting presence of trauma within individuals and society as a whole. What Kluge, in cooperation with Oskar Negt, called “alternative public sphere” in Public Sphere and Experience (1972) and History and Obstinacy (1981) is closely linked to Woman and so-called “proletarian” forces countering instrumental reason and the bourgeois cultural matrix. Analyzing four crucial films from Kluge’s creative work, I outline the increasingly allegorical role of his concept of “female mode of production,” which constitutes Kluge’s aesthetics and thematic focus. How the ideas of “alternative public sphere” and “female mode of production” are linked to the cinema and Kluge’s theory of film is the focus of another chapter that scrutinizes Kluge’s recent literary compilation Cinema Stories (2007). Finally, I read a selection of contemporary German films considered the new filmic avant-garde through the lens of Kluge’s approach to film, to the “female mode of production,” and to the public sphere. This allows me to compare the ethics, the formal and political attitude of the so-called Berlin School directors to the vanguard movement of Young German Film in the sixties and early seventies. I conclude that the filmic Autoren today deal with a similar problem as Alexander Kluge has done throughout his career, namely the dissociation of personal, lived experience from public representation. They also employ formal and thematic strategies that can be related to the thoughts behind the Oberhausen generation of German filmmakers. While the generation of the leftist student movements sought public recognition of the atrocities committed under National Socialism, the Berlin School directors deal with mediated experience in times of media and finance corporatism as virtual realities threaten to take over the empiric world.Ph. Thoughts on the Importance of the Meso Perspective: the “ Plattform Produktives Stadtgrün” / Gedanken zur Bedeutung der Mesoperspektive: „Plattform Produktives Stadtgrün“

Invited to contribute to a book section on Berlin, Katrin Bohn thinks about the importance of a middle ground between the big pressing macro questions of climate change and the micro spaces of individual food system activities. She writes: ‘Judging by the realities of environmental degradation, traditional urban planning has failed. Concerns of experts have not been sufficiently acknowledged. It requires a middle ground—a meso perspective—to better enable conversation between the various urban stakeholders and bring about widely supported and lasting change. How can this be initiated? In a time of social media, the author proposes to look at a recently developed tool for information, communication, networking, and—ultimately—urban planning’.Bohn uses the Plattform Produktives Stadtgrün [Plattform Productive Urban Green], a Berlin-based interactive online tool developed in a collaboration between the local council, local community gardeners and external experts, including Katrin, to illustrate such a meso perspective. The book Urban Open Space + is edited by Carolin Mees and published by Jovis. Subtitled Strategies inbetween architecture and open space planning, the bi-lingual publication (English/German) explores ‘commonly used and designed open spaces [as] anchor points in the city and a possible response to the consequences of urbanization and climate change, as well as to the presence of social and cultural differences’

Magistritöö Ökonoomika ja ettevõtluse õppekavaKäesoleva magistritöö eesmärk on välja selgitada, milline on Lasita Maja grupi bränd tööandjana ja kuidas see mõjutab personali värbamist. Uurimismeetodina kasutas autor kvantitatiivuuringut, koostades ankeetküsimustiku, mida ettevõtte töötajad täitsid paberkandjal ja võrdlusgrupp elektrooniliselt. Lisaks koguti andmeid poolstruktureeritud intervjuu kaudu tootmisjuhiga. Käesoleva magistritöö eesmärgi täitmiseks on autori poolt teostatud kvantitatiivne juhtumiuuring Lasita Maja Eesti grupi kolmest tööandjast: Lasita Maja Production AS, Lasita Maja AS ja Bohlen AS ja võrdlusuuring ettevõttega mitte seotud inimestest. The aim of this Master's thesis is to identify what is the brand of the Lasita Maja group as an employer and how it affects the recruitment of staff. As a research method, the author used a quantitative study, by drawing up a questionnaire filled out by the employees of the company on paper and by the reference group electronically. In addition, the data was collected through a semi-structured interview with the production manager. The actuality of the topic lies in the shortage of skilled free labor in the labor market and the company´s growing need for qualified personnel. The choice of the topic of the Master's thesis is related to the fact that the employer's brand has not been individually investigated in the company and the desire to know the reasons for the main employers' brand related to effective recruitment and the employer's brand. This Master's thesis consists of various sources of literature and scientific articles. The sources of literature used are both domestic and foreign. The results of this work can be used as an internal source for the company in planning and organizing future studies, developing a company's effective recruitment process and strategy, and providing its employees with recommendations for potential employees. For the purpose of this Master's thesis, the author has conducted a quantitative case study and benchmarking of three employers of Lasita Maja Estonian Group: Lasita Maja Production AS, Lasita Maja AS and Bohlen AS. The author analyzed the results of this study on the basis of demographic indicators in order to obtain factual information for improvement proposals. The most important results show that the employer's trademark is not very well known, but respondents considered the reputation rather good The most commonly used information channel is the company's homepage, a friend´s/acquaintance´s tips, and internet portals. Respondents know what products the company produces and the company is known for its high quality products. More than 60% of all respondents would recommend Lasita Maja as an employer for everyone. The main reason why people stay with the employer is working hours, job satisfaction and company's reputation. The brand's impact on recruitment is rather positive and encourages effective recruitment

This study analyzes the dynamics of short-term treatment response to the first intravitreal faricimab injection in eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME). This retrospective, single-center, clinical trial was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Zurich. Patients with treatment-naïve and pretreated DME were included. Patient chart data and imaging were analyzed. Safety and efficacy (corrected visual acuity (CVA), central subfield thickness (CST), and signs of intraocular inflammation (IOI)) of the first faricimab intravitreal therapy (IVT) were evaluated weekly until 4 weeks after injection. Forty-three eyes (81% pretreated) of 31 patients were included. Four weeks after the first faricimab IVT, CVA remained stable and median CST (µm) decreased significantly (p p p = 0.002) between baseline and week 4 CST. Weekly safety assessments did not show any sign of clinically significant IOI. This study suggests faricimab is an effective treatment for (pretreated) DME, showing structural benefit 1 month following the first injection without short-term safety signals

Magistritöö Ökonoomika ja ettevõtlus õppekavalKäesolev magistritöö keskendub sõiduautode müügiga tegeleva ettevõtte strateegilisele analüüsile, et leida viise muutustega kohanemiseks, mis leiavad aset 2035. aastal ning töötada välja efektiivsem strateegia. Teema on aktuaalne, kuna keskkond on pidevas muutumises ja keskkonna säästmiseks võeti Euroopa Liidu poolt vastu otsus, mitte müüa enam aastast 2035 sisepõlemismootoriga sõidukeid. This Master's thesis focuses on the strategic analysis of the passenger car sales company in order to find ways to adapt to the changes that will take place in 2035 and to develop a more effective strategy. The issue is topical as the environment is constantly changing and a decision was taken by the European Union to save the environment, rather than selling vehicles with internal combustion engines from 2035. This means that more intensive development is looming for the future, and for car sales companies and manufacturers this means massive investment and a revision of the action plans. Four research tasks were set up to achieve this goal. In order to get an answer to which interviews, participatory surveys were carried out and a questionnaire was prepared for competitors to examine the position of the company among the companies dealing with cars in Virumaa. In this thesis, the author uses the following methods for conducting strategic analysis: the PESTLE method for external analysis, the SWOT method for company analysis, and the Porter Five Forces, Blue Ocean Canvas and Financial Relationship for analysis of competition conditions. The results showed that the company has secured its position in the market by operating on a long-term basis and in future making the right strategic decisions, the company should start doing better. The company will have twelve years to adapt to the changes ahead, and it would be wise to invest in solar panels today so that the electricity needed to charge its cars can be produced. The strategic analysis and proposals made by the author should help Agdeck-Auto OÜ to eliminate threats and create a strategy that would help to be innovative and adapt to changes
